Thanks ram. I d seen the latest 5 year development plan submitted to cm too, in which the 6 lane widening was specified. wat i was referring to was one of the old ones ( i m unsure of which exactly that was, as i dont have the pdf in my comp ryt now)...

n in one f the previous posts, ajayettan had mentioned about our hon MP kick starting the 4 laning... tht s y i suggested about widening directly to 6 lanes...

As I understand the facts from the folks directly concerned, the DPR is being currently revised at the behest of our MP with a view to take up the 4-laning of the Kazhakkoottam - Vizhinjam stretch under the Annuity funding option by NHAI. The remaining portion till the TN Border would be taken up as and when land acquisition is completed and then the whole stretch may be turned over for tolling.

Direct 6-laning is the best option, however that will need a completely new DPR, not just an updated version, and this will take at least 12 months to complete. Moreover, it seems that funds are in short supply at NHAI for annuity based projects and there might be some delay in actually handing out the tender.

This is a 100% Central project and the key person here is the MP, as has already become evident in this case and those of the Kollam and Allapuzha bypasses.

In view of the extensive delays already encountered thus far and the urgency of commencing widening, it may be best to initiate work for the 4-laning at the earliest. This can be amended to 6-laning even while construction is underway.

An examination of the DPR for this stretch will show that all structures to be put up will be capable of accommodating 6 lanes of traffic so adding an additional two lanes within the existing 45 m RoW will not be a big issue.

At this juncture, I will defer to Ajith for his expert comments. Sire?
