Why wouldn't they need a second crane for this building? After all, each WTC building had TWO cranes on top yet they installed a third trailing crane. If they help on those projects why not on this?

Also, while the building grows taller it may get smaller but the lift distance grows longer. So it really isn't necessarily true that an additional crane might not be needed.

Finally, the second crane is slightly lower down than the original one and no crane sections are on site to jump it. Yet if it is intended to be the primary crane they need to make it taller right away.

I am totally guessing but I suspect we will have two cranes on this project.

Oh, and as to additional cost, time is money. If this helps them build faster it saves them money.

This is very interesting indeed. My question though, is since both cranes are on the same side of the tower and so close, won't it be an annoyance to have to work around the cranes hitting each other constantly?

We don't know if they will use both cranes..But we do know that old crane can't grow to the top because it can't be attached to building above the last setback..That's why they installed this one which will be able to grow all the way to the top..It's on the side where One57 is taller and has flat side..No setbacks..

WTC buildings have steel construction..2 cranes lift steel, 1 is for concrete..And WTC towers are much bigger..One57 is all concrete, so crane only has to lift mostly rebars and concrete for small plate..We've seen how fast it can go with only one crane..

For example, 1WTC has 40 000 square feet footprint while One57 has 15 699 square feet footprint..That gives you the scale..

I'm really looking forward to see if they'll move it or leave it..

If they leave it, it can only be a good thing because it will grow faster..

If they leave the old one, every crane will have his radius of working so they don't crush..But it's way easier to work with those cranes than the one with horizontal arm..

My guess is that the original crane will be taken down but not for quite a while until it becomes obsolete. For the time being two cranes will be used and that's all that matters.

People said, once this thing starts getting visible from Central Park we'll get a lot more of photo's. And indeed that's true. Also because people see it in Central Park they go check it out and make pics of it.

They'll need the first crane to get the second down as no street crane could get it down. They could also start using bigger collars on the first crane like this one from Sydney. The crane is actually on the building next door and about 8 metres away.

They won't use crane for glass panels..It's like I hire 6' 7'' tall body builder to lift a bottle of vine from the floor and put it on desk..They are too strong and expensive for this job..

As for dismantling, when comes time for cranes to get down, they will lower themselves like they erected themselves..

Yes but the second crane was installed by the first.. It can't get itself back to street level.

Nope. I have taken my tape measure down there but it is only 20 feet long. So the only thing I can tell you with confidence is it is over 20 feet tall.
