This is an excellent thread, educates us on the diversity of China's ethnic and culture. As I could not read mandarin, will be great to see their geographical origin. But as their clothing has shown, I can just guess they are in the north, close to Mongol, Russia, Kazakhstan, Burma, or moslems...

Most of the 55 minorities are in the border areas because historically people move around easily and border crossing was easier. But now you have the formation of nation-states with things such as citizenship, visa, etc controlling movement and strict boundaries.. so often you have ethnic groups that are split up into different countries.

people would arguably say the Uzbeks and Uyghurs (found in Soviet Union and China) are mostly the same people.

sometimes some people get merged together. China classifies three-four different ethnic groups as Tibetan even though their culture and language are different. You have Hui's who are basically a wide variety of ethnic groups from those who are no different than the Han majority, ethnic Tibetan who are Muslims, to Cham people who migrated from Cambodia a long time ago).

but you also have many in China's "interior" areas like the Yao people, Hui, etc. the "Han" themselves are also quite diverse because of China's complex history.
