Great pictures, but I want more!
Significantly better than getting into Manhattan from other Boroughs, just take the path train, which is even cheaper than the subway in NYC.

Rent can run you anywhere from $800- 1200 in J.Sq. this area is also a drivers nightmare, not as bad as nyc but finding parking at night can be a hassle. The area is more lively though and is more densely populated than the rest of the city. Downtown also offers path trains but of course that area would cost you a little more per month.

What kind of apartment is that for $800 on Journal Square? In Brooklyn that would be something really small and not very appealing.

Granted, an apartment for $800 is still not the greatest apartment. That would be only a 1bd and wont be too big. If you are looking for something a little more spacey and aesthetically pleasing, you should look for apartments over $1100 if you want to stay in J.sq. The Heights section may be a little more accommodating to your likings probably, but there are no PATH stops other than J.sq, but you can reach it via bus which is only 10min depending on how far away you stay from J.sq. Parking is slightly easier in the Heights and could possibly find a renter who has a parking garage that is willing to lend it to you, ( my sister found a owner who allows her to keep her car inside the garage) if your lucky.

Great photos! They brought back memories. JC is a great place to stay. Quiet but safe, clean and modern. And very cheap. On my last two trips to the USA we stayed firstly at the Hyatt (on the Hudson) and secondly the new (Westin). Used Priceline and only paid around US$85 for a 4 star room.
Why spend all your hard earned on Manhattan hotels! After all, its only a dollar or two train fare under the Hudson away.
