I thought that was pretty much what Urban Splash was doing, one third to be sold off to buyers, one third for joint ownership and one third for social housing, thereby ensuring that there is some affordable housing while it doesn't go back to being a bit of a ghetto and making urban splash money.

If the Park Hill flats were done up to meet modern requirements, yet still kept their basic look and if you can promise me that the views are of the city centre and the Pennines beyond, I would jump at the chance of living there!

Now all I need is a reason to actually live in Sheffield...

I think something more radical is needed to get away from the status quo - ie dog shit on the forecourts and lifts smelling of piss.

That's how I look at it. I've probably told before of how I wanted them demolished, but my opinion has changed since; as ugly as they are I couldn't imagine Sheffield without them. A makeover's the best thing possible.

On a side note, has anyone got any photographs of the flats before the tower part was demolished? I saw it once and it looked like Sheffield's version of the Walled City.

Here it is Pob, although its actually from Hyde Park flats next door, the whole lot was pulled down in 1992 save for two shorter sections, they got reclad green/grey and red/beige, and are now student flats. You can see them from the Sheaf Square/Parkway area...

The short section in front of the tower is the green/grey bit now, the red/beige bit is behind the massive left-hand block, which gives it some scale and helps to work out where it used to be. Check out http://www.freewebs.com/streetsinthesky/ for lots of pics!

Yes, they were re-clad for the World(?) student games in 1992. That turned out to be a financial diaster. I think these types of deck access flats- redesigned to sort out the wind tunnels (Hyde Park had bad problems in this respect) and locking out non-residents- can only work well as student accommodation. Relatively civilised people and not too picky.

Thanks for the link.

Cheers guys. Even the low-rise sections looked different (more brutal than they do nowadays). I've always wondered what the atmosphere must have been like during the economic nadir of the 1970s & 1980s. Rather grim I assume.

Great photos in that lot, some very artistic.

Park Hill flats look like a castle in some of the shots from Kelvin flats!

I have to say that from an outside point of view these flats are part of the identity of sheffield so make them over and make them something to be proud of.

regenerating these flats would amke as much a statement about Sheffield's resuragence as any shiny tower in the city centre.

long live PHF!

But their shape means that, in many people's eyes, they will still look crap no matter what is done to them.

I think the flats need lots of dark glass, and the top floor given over to restaurants and leisure facilities such as a health club. A more attractive approach road would help - possibly linking to a tram stop.

To put poeple's minds at rest, Urban Spash are doing up The Rotunda in Birmingham, another Grade 2 listed building, into flats. Currently, it looks like this...

Yep, they're completely stripping it down and recladding it, so it shows what can be gone when it's grade 2. Can't find a render of what it will look like when finished, but I believe it will look similar to before, but with much higher quality materials. Lets hope it's the same for PHF eh?

The Rotunda is being turned into apartments, not flats.

Well, PHF are not strictly flats, but maisonettes.

I personally would hope to see them re-clad (athough a better job than Hyde Park!) I agree that a floor for restaurarnts etc would be amazing. Anyone ever walked up Duke St/City road and looked right into the PHF complex? There's a school, pub/bar and shops. All derelect now of course, but imagine! This would be so easily re-opened

I really hope Urban Splash can turnaround the image of Park Hill flats so that it becomes a great asset to the city, some will say it already is, but if anyone can really scream this Urban Splash can.
