Charlotte has a great skyline, especially for a city of its size. It looks very modern and clean with so many of the tallest buildings being fairly recent. And some of the older (and less attractive) buildings are smaller and do a good job of providing density without calling too much attention to themselves.
I don't care for the Hearst, but the BOA is quite attractive and so is the new energy tower.

I like Hearst. The geometry of the building kind of plays tricks with your eyes and forces you to pay attention to it. Plus the architectural detail is well done, both at the ground level and within the bulk of the building, especially on the crown.

While BOA and Duke are certainly iconic, Hearst is, IMO, the most interesting. The Charlotte skyline is impressive. The thing I find depressing about Charlotte is the way that it has savaged its historic stock. In this regard it has gone way past other Southern cities.

I'm not the biggest fan of Hearst. I do like it at ground level. The enterance is really classy looking. The inside is really pretty as well. I'm not a big fan of the location of the building. I wish it was at least a block further from BOA. It being so close to BOA kind of pulls the attention away from it. I feel like it would be noticed more, and more appreciated(and look larger) if it was not so close to BOA. I don't really like the crown, and the building seems underwhelming at night. Still a great building, but not I like a few of the others in the skyline much better.

I think the coloration of the Hearst's crown is a detriment in the daytime. IMO it comes across as a pale afterthought, or as a rather blase roof cheaply capped upon the structure. I appreciate the geometric play of the tower but can't help but think the crown overall isn't the perfect match for what (I think) they were striving to present. Hardly unattractive, but not one I'd draft for my idealized skyline, personally.

I've always thought hearsts crown would've looked really good if it was green like the statue of liberty but I guess the price of copper made that unlikely. But they could still plate it.

new favorite picture of the queen city
image hosted on flickr ![]() There is a lot of density in the Charlotte Skyline that goes unnoticed by posters. Here is a good view where you can see the hotels and goverment buildings in the gov't district and its relationship to the rest of the skyline. Its much more than just 6 blocks of tall buildings... image hosted on flickr ![]() nice pano showing some of the density to the left that goes ignored by most posters. image hosted on flickr ![]() beautiful shot I hadn't seen before from Yellow Mountain? This image shows a lot of the density that goes unmentioned. Especially along Morehead to the left of downtown, and in the Gov't District, Great post another great example! http://www.clearskyimages.com/p83511...22060#h5762102 Last edited by rickydavisfan21; December 14th, 2011 at 10:30 PM. |
