Trio out to prove Philly's got game

Philadelphia 2016 co-chairman Joe Torsella, city Commerce Director Stephanie Naidoff and paralympian April Holmes will pitch the city and its Olympic plans to the 11-person United States Olympic Committee board sometime today.
The board is convening for six hours in La Jolla, Calif., site of the second U.S. Olympic Assembly. That gathering began Wednesday and will continue through tomorrow night.

Philly and the four other American cities — Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco — interested in bidding for the 2016 Summer Games are limited to 15-minute presentations. Beyond that, all five cities have been invited to set up and man an Olympic booth as part of the exposition that will accompany this assembly. The city's Sports Congress also will have a booth.

This comes after the five cities were asked to provide more details on their Olympic plans by Wednesday. Melissa Grimm and Jessica Myers, who traveled there earlier this week to attend meetings for the USOC's community partners, hand-delivered this region's packet when they arrived.

The USOC has said all along that it would give itself until the end of the year to decide whether it will bid on the Games, but it's safe to speculate that the decision is only weeks away, not months. What's unknown is whether any cities will be cut.

"I don't read tea leaves," Torsella said earlier this week. "But the fact that the USOC is taking this step leads me to be hopeful they they're going to put forward a bid, and further, it will be us."

In several related bits of news from the other side of the globe, the International Olympic Committee yesterday paired the field for the 2014 Winter Games to three — Salzburg, Austria; Pyeongchang, South Korea, and Sochi, Russia. The winner will be picked July 4, 2007. The international body also committed to the Paralympic Games through 2016.

Finalists will be announced shortly. I believe KYW 1060 AM will air this live.

USOC set to trim list of 2016 host cities tomorrow

Philadelphia will find out in the next 36 hours whether it can continue its marathon run toward the 2016 Summer Olympics or snuff out its Olympic torch.

The United States Olympic Committee has scheduled a midafternoon news conference tomorrow in Denver, where it said it will narrow the field from the current five cities that have expressed interest in the Games. The USOC also plans to announce the next steps in the process.

Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco have been waiting to hear from the USOC since late June. All five cities sent representatives to the Olympic Assembly in La Jolla, Calif., where each gave a 15-minute presentation before the USOC board and dropped off a package containing detailed information on their bids.

A four-member panel of experts has been reviewing the data since, examining everything from the Olympic Stadium and Olympic Village concepts to governmental support to the projected legacies each city envisions. Their assessments were discussed Friday by the USOC board and its management team, setting the stage for tomorrow's announcement.

Not only will the USOC reduce its number of candidate cities, but it also could finally announce officially that it will put up a U.S. city for the 2016 Games. Since this process began in earnest earlier this year, USOC chairman Peter Ueberroth has suggested that the United States could pass on the bid, citing its low international stature. But that always has seemed unlikely, with emerging cities in Africa and South America, where the Games never have been held, likely to fill spots in 2020 and 2024.

The 2008 Games are slated for Beijing; the 2012 Games for London. The next Winter Olympics will be in Vancouver in 2010.

The USOC also said it will discuss tomorrow which U.S. city possesses the highest standing among international members it has polled.

According to KYW-3, the USOC eliminated Philly and Houston from contention.

Disappointing news indeed. But there's so much other positive development in Philly going on now that I think Philly will do just fine without the Olympics.

A great read. I got that National Geographic Traveler issue just for the article. I'm planning to go back to Philly sometime in the near future.

The thread is 5 years old. No need to bump it to the front page to let people know about something that was reported last year.
