OODA’s Istanbul Disaster Prevention & Education Centre Doubles as an Emergency Shelter
Istanbul has seen its fair share of disasters, especially earthquakes, and this unique design by OODA addresses those concerns with a massive 3-dimensional cross building that also doubles as an emergency shelter. In case of an earthquake or flood, the building is designed to find new stability and safely ride out the earth's dramatic show of force. The Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre includes facilities such as a planetarium, a theatre and other educational spaces. The exterior is clad in a screen inspired by traditional arabic geometries and works to modulate the interior climate and natural daylight. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is actively working on a centre with adequate technology and facilities prepped against disaster (specifically earthquakes) and helps develop public consciousness surrounding disasters. The centre will host a variety of courses, congresses and seminars around disasters and simulation facilities inside will allow visitors to actually experience earthquakes, hurricanes, fire fighting, smoke, liquefaction, tsunamis, first aid and emergency communications. Visitors will also have the chance to make use of a planetarium, a library, and meeting halls. OODA’s proposal calls for a large 3D cross building with 6 programmatic areas situated off the central lobby – the entrance, planetarium, library, training, simulation, conference area, and administration. The exterior is clad in a progressive concept with Arabic patterns that places the building within the local context and acts as a sun and rain screen. Natural daylighting filters through the gaps, while protecting the building from the elements and moderating the interior climate. The grounds surrounding the building are landscaped based on traditional Turkish patterns that provide connections to the surrounding city and organize the spaces. An underground parking garage sits below the curved park. Serving as a new landmark for the city, the Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre is designed for both local residents and tourists. In the case of disaster, such as an earthquake or a flood, the facility is designed to withstand the traumatic forces. The building’s unique shape allows it to ride out the event unharmed and vibrations may result in the building finding a new stability. Residents of the area can then converge at the center post disaster for assistance. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Atasehir Tower plans to rival London's Shard at a staggering 300m in height
RMJM’s Dubai studio has just received planning approval for one of the tallest towers in Europe, located in the Atasehir district of Istanbul, Turkey. The design for the mixed-use building, including super-high-rise apartments, will consist of a tower nearly 300m tall comparable with the height of London’s Shard. The 500,000 sq m development will consist of three towers located over an extensive landscaped public podium. The main tower will include offices, serviced apartments, a hotel, sky lobby and a 30,000 sq m public shopping mall. There will be a separate residential-only block which will be between 30 and 40 storeys tall, together with a dedicated office tower addressing the new financial district. Its planned location is in the new Istanbul International Financial Centre, a zone within the district of Atasehir given special status by the Turkish government to promote the development of the city as a new financial hub. Turkish construction companies Varyap and GAP Insaat are developing the scheme and plan to commence construction early next month. The population of Istanbul has increased dramatically from 2.7 million in 1980 to over 13 million last year, which has created a building boom over the last decade, resulting in the demand for a number of new apartments around the city. Istanbul’s 12 tallest skyscrapers have all been completed since the turn of the millennium. Jonathan Knight, Design Principal at RMJM, comments: “In its architecture this project has tried to capture the essence of the city and reinterpret this in a contemporary setting. The tower will be the tallest in Turkey, and amongst the largest in Europe, symbolising the dynamism and confidence of Turkey in 2012. The tower reflects all that is truly inspiring about modern day Istanbul. “This project has been an exercise in urban planning as much as architecture - it is about the spaces in between the buildings as much the buildings themselves. Our intentions were to create a new public destination - a new heart for Atasehir that was first and foremost inclusive and accessible to the people of the city.” ![]() ![]() http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com...pload_id=18730 |

Low rise residential complex by Swanke Hayden Connell completes in Istanbul
Swanke Hayden Connell Architects (SHCA) has completed its 92-unit residential Bomonti complex in a neighbourhood area of central Istanbul. The project was undertaken for the Extensa Group, a European property developer whose headquarters is in Belgium, which originally commissioned SHCA to provide a master plan for a 2.4 hectare site which includes several development plots and an existing organic market. The aim of the project was to design a ‘low-rise rather than high-rise’ building that is respectful to the surrounding context as well as maximising the saleable floor area within the local permit regulations,” said Nick Birchall, head of the SHCA Istanbul office. Ozlem Gokce General Manager Extensa Istanbul said: “SHCA has designed a high quality and environmentally friendly apartment building that has created value for the investors and for the surrounding neighbourhood. As architects, they were responsive - providing creativity and value.” The design approach has been influenced by the local context - the principal elevations face East and West - and has different design solutions to each aspect. On the East side there is a 'formal' design response to the surrounding narrow streets by stacking the apartments to form bays that reflect the local town house typology, thereby creating a vertical rhythm. On the West side the building faces an organic market and has a more 'informal' design response grouping apartments in a horizontal arrangement which includes sliding louvers to the windows, the position of which can change according to residents’ preferences. Timber clad balconies are located in a random pattern which is in keeping with the spirit of the informality of the adjacent market place. The building skin has been designed in accordance with international standards and provides a higher thermal insulation than local code requires. The sliding timber louvers on the West facade help to reduce solar radiation and prevent over-heating on this façade, where the sun hits with the lower angle. A mirror clad light-well located in the centre of the building enables natural light to penetrate the common areas. Natural materials used externally on the facades, including stone and timber, provide an authenticity and a sense of permanence to the design. http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com ![]() ![]() ![]()
