amazing, never knew about this either. it is reported that it started to be open to tourists in May 2001. It was built in Ming Dynasty(1573-1620) for the government to protect Shu Miao from Sheng Miao Minority who were repelling at that time. Because of the much weaker military force in the south at that time, the bricks they used are much smaller as well. They are only about 1/10 to1/6 to bricks in the north. Experts have stated that there is no reason to seperate this part of great wall away from the northern ones, because they are all belonging to the same part of world heritage. It's just a matter of document procedures...

wow a Southern Great Wall.

What about the wall that was built by Qin Shi Huang? Would that mean China has 3 Great Walls?

This is a really good map detailing the changes in the location of the Great Wall over the Dynasties.

There seems to be errors on the above map. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the great wall included the liaodong peninsula during the Ming dynasty. It stopped at the Shanghai pass near beijing.

"Using mapping technologies such as infrared range finders and GPS devices, experts discovered portions of the wall – concealed by hills, trenches and rivers – that stretch from Hu Mountain in northern Liaoning province to Jiayu Pass in western Gansu province, China Daily reported yesterday.

The newly mapped parts of the wall were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to protect against northern invaders and were submerged over time by sandstorms that moved across the arid region, the study said."

China's earliest Great Wall ruins found

The Great Wall ruins of the ancient Chu state are seen in Yexian county, Pingdingshan, Central China's Henan province. The province's cultural heritage bureau said on March 8 that they have found what was called the "Father of Great Wall" – the Chu Great Wall – by using archaeological methods, revealing the missing wall's geographical position and extending directions for the first time. The bureau said the ruins of Chu Great Wall mostly belong to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC to 476 BC) while some were built during the Warring States period (403 BC-221 BC), and they mainly lie in the province's southern cities of Pingdingshan, Nanyang, Zhumadian and Xinyang.
