Hi guys!

This year I will spend New Year's Eve in Budapest so I have a couple of questions for you. I will arrive on 31st of December at mid-day, and leave Budapest in the afternoon of 1st of January.
  • Where will the fireworks be? Where should I be at midnight to see them better?
  • Will shops&stores be open on December 31st and/or January 1st? I am more concerned about eating facilities (eg: restaurants, fast-foods, but also shopping malls).
  • Is Budapest Parliment visitable on December 31st? If yes, which are the rules? I've read on a website that it costs 5500 Ft, but they also say it's free for EU citizens. Can you please help me on this one?
  • What are the other touristic attractions I should not miss during this short stay? (I am almost sure that I will go up on Gellért Hill to see the city)

Thank you!

Hi Bogdymol,

1.) Fireworks are not organized, they are private ones, of what you may see more hundred thousands at midnight, however good visibility weather is an important factor. If You are unlucky you should see only the fog and hear the fireworks
2.) Shopping malls should be open up to 24:00 on the 31. December, New Years Day is holiday at shopping.
3.) I do not know how is this in this year, but the Parliament is normally open for tourists every day. Entrance fees were last year at around 5-6 thousand HUF. I did not know that visiting is free of charge for EU-citizens, but may be.
4.) Tourist attractions: Gellért Hill, Castle Hill, Matthias Church, St. Stephen's Basilica major, Vörösmarty square, City, all bridges, especially the completely renovated Margaret Bridge is worth of visiting. If You have more time, a visit on the Hero's Square and around the City Park is worthwhile.

The homepage of the Parlament doesn't say they are closed on the 31st, so it will be open between 8:00 and 16:00, and is free for EU citizens:

http://parlament.hu/angol/eng/tajekoztato.htm

On the 31st, shops close around 14:00-16:00, even in shopping malls, but restaurants are open for a longer time.

I've had a look on their website and it appears to be opened on 31st of December and it's free of charge. Cool I will do it!

How about shops/fast-foods on January 1st? What time do they usually open? Or... do they open at all in the first day of the new year?

Restaurants usually open around noon. Shops, super and hipermarkets are going to be closed on Jan 1.

Internship in Budapest!

I am currently pursuing an internship in Budapest, and for the internship, I must be there at least 90 days. The internship is unpaid, so I am wondering, will I need a visa? What will I need to do? I am from the United States, so I know I will need medical insurance, etc. but what else?

I lived in Europe for 6 years, but on a military base, so it didn't require a visa or anything, but I'm not fully aware of what's necessary for the internship.

I think you will need a visa as your stay will be longer than 90 days. You should read this, the homepage of the Hungarian Embassy in Washington:

http://washington.kormany.hu/entry-for-long-stay

I hope the embassy can answer all your questions!

Hello ! One question for you :)

Ok guys, I'm going to Budapest in august and I would like to ask you for something. I'm a vegetarian so my question is : Do you have any national vegetarian dish wich I must to know??

Could you write me in your language this sentence : I'm a vegeterian, do you have something without meet?

I'd say LECSÓ is, but make sure it is also made without any meat, because there are a 1000 variations.

Also, the thick variations of vegetable stews are called characteristically hungarian, they are made from almost all vegetables, the category is called főzelék. But it is typically thickened with sour creme and I dont know if ure hardcore veggie or not.

the sentence: Vegetáriánus vagyok, hús nélküli ételt szeretnék.

but be prepared: hungarians CANT IMAGINE any dish without carbon hydrates or meat, you'll find it hard to avoid meat here..
