Station Street Tower| Portsmouth | 101m | 25 fl | App
Deep in the global recession, (over?)confident Portsmouth approves a 101m hotel, beating the current tallest habitable, One Gunwharf Quays by barely a metre. 5 Less floors than the 30 floor Gunwharf beast but in a much more central location should help pinnacle the city centre skyline a little more.

The cladding needs to be broken up a bit. Nice spire though

I think the cladding looks boring as fuck, but that could be just a poor render, I am tempted to email the developers and ask to see some elevations.
Still, nice to see second 100m+ tower for good old Pompey, 3 if you include Obs Towers. |

Boring yes but hey its 100m tall. At least it’s not some plastic/terracotta fad cladding which so many buildings up and down the country are covered in. This won’t age nearly as quickly as all that crap.
I’m still very sceptical as to whether this will be built or not. Robert Gamlen Homes don’t seem like they could pull this off especially in the current climate. But with planning permission and the massive shortage of hotel rooms in this city it can only be a matter of time before an operator comes along. Fingers crossed. |

Regarding cheap plastic/terracotta, I was wondering around Gunwharf earlier and thinking how lucky we are that one of our key residential developments was clad in BRICK not Plastic Tiles.

You absolutely right the crescent building which is clad in terracotta is far inferior to the canal side apartments. Which really are fab.

I took a photo of the new 8 floor apartment block up in Cosham today, now THAT is bad cladding. I shall post it in the Portsmouth thread...

Yeah it is pretty boring, but this should still look sexy if the glass is good. 8

8/10. Just because it hasn't got piss-streak Beetham cladding or plastic bits stuck to the sides doesn't mean it's boring. Plenty of other buildings have done very well for themselves with simple glass facades.
I call that classy, not boring, or 'gimmicky' like so many other resi/hotel towers these days. |

It certainly hasn't appeared on the skyline yet.
Edit (20/11/10): Stopped and had a look today on my way to Commercial Road - the old building's still there with a big 'BUSINESS SPACE TO LET' banner on the front of it. Not sure if this one's going to happen any time soon!

We could probably make a construction thread for this one rather soon - I have a bit of news!
I emailed Robert Gamlen yesterday to ask about the progress of the tower. I mentioned that I was a 2nd year Civil Engineering student looking into Portsmouth's ongoing development and was wondering about the status of the hotel. I received a response today: Richard, I was originally funded by RBS but they decided that due to the credit crunch they did not want to be involved. I therefore had to refinance it with a American Bank and this has now been completed but took quite a long time. Rezidor the parent company that runs the Radisson Blu brand are the most likely operator but others are interested. I am in the middle of negotiating a build contract with one of the biggest contractors in order to get it built. The internal demolition has already started but we are currently held up by the gas board who are taking an age to remove a gas main before the major demolition machinery can be brought on site. We have renewed the planning permission in December and hope to be building by the early summer. I hope this helps Robert Gamlen
