Norsk arkitektur utenfor Norge | Norwegian architecture beyond Norway
![]() Norwegian architecture beyond Norway A thread where we can present and discuss projects done by Norwegian architects outside Norway, similar to the older thread N&B Designed projects outside our Region which doesn't seem to attract too many Norwegian forumers anymore. Since ArchDaily feature a Snøhetta project in Spain today i guess it would be natural to start with it. ![]() ![]() San Sebastian Subway Entrance / Snøhetta The building of the new metro in San Sebastian Donastia will connect the people and the different areas of the city in a new way. It will set a new standard for the future of the town and its way forward. It will offer donastiarras and visitors a new means of public transpiration, and be a part of the future pulse of San Sebastian Donastia. The entrance design by Snøhetta is based on a continuous movement from underground level to over ground, and vice versa. The design element goes from being a ceiling structure underground to create a roof structure over the stairs and up over ground. The structure describes the transition between the two states and connects the city life with the metro world. More on ArchDaily. ![]() Illustration by MIR ![]() Illustration by MIR ![]() Btw, San Sebastian is a city with almost 190 000 inhabitants and is now building a metro. If only Norwegian cities was as urban and dense as Spanish cities was! |

King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture | Snøhetta
The King Abdulaziz Center for Knowledge and Culture is a bold new initiative on the part of the Saudi Aramco Oil Company (world's largest oil company) to promote cultural development within the Kingdom. Following an invited architectural design competition in 2007 Snøhetta has been selected to design this prestigious cultural facility. Located in Dhahran in the Eastern Province the Cultural Center will provide for a wide range of activities serving the local population and becoming a cultural landmark on both a regional, national and global horizon. When completed, the project will contain some 50 000m2 of diverse cultural facilities, including an auditorium, cinema, library, exhibition hall, museum and archive. The auditorium will seat 1000 visitors and will provide for a wide range of events ranging from opera, symphony concerts, musicals and speeches etc. Together with the smaller cinema, this will be an unrivalled venue for the performing arts in the Kingdom. The library will become a center of learning containing some 300 000 books on open access and catering for all ages and categories of users. The great exhibition hall will accommodate large scale travelling exhibitions, as well as providing the setting for social events, banquets and conferences. The museum and archive facilities connect the vibrant cultural life of the center to the past and to the very roots of the society from which this center is conceived. Construction started in 2008 and is planned completed in 2013. ![]() Illustration by MIR ![]() Illustration by Luxigon ![]() Illustration by Luxigon ![]() Illustration by MIR ![]() Illustration by MIR ![]() Illustration by MIR ![]() Illustration by MIR |

Isn't the threads a bit pointless? The biggest markets for Scandinavian architects are still Scandinavia.
It's mostly a common market.

there is tonnes of Norwegian architects involved in projects in Sweden and Denmark which we don't get anything from in the N&B thread, which is why this thread is more useful for Norwegians than the N&B thread.

Great to see the export of Scandinavian architecture. Nice to see the Scandinavian architects ideas and work in different settings (landscape and culture) ) It goes to show, we could have more exciting architecture in Norway as well, can’t always blame the architects. Some are world class

indeed, that one looks cool too! Hopefully the final version of Snøhetta's design will look as good as that.

Vang stavkyrkje, Karpacz in Poland
![]() Picture taken from Wikimedia Commons.[1] This is a little bit on the outside of what is usually featured in this thread, but it is a fun bit of trivia so I thought I'd include it. This stave church was originally built around the year 1200 and stood in Vang, Valdres. In 1832 the local authorities wanted to tear it down to build a more modern church. The old church was auctioned off, and after a few ideas fell through it finally ended up in the hands of Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. He moved it to Krummhübel in Silesia, now Karpacz in Poland. The church was however so extensively redesigned when it was put back together again that it is no longer on the official stave church list.
