That's great, impressionism is my favorite type of European painting. I'm hoping to trip down to the Getty to check out the PST exhibit in January, so will try to take a peek at the new Manet then.

Oddly the main reason I like Manet is that he stayed away from impressionism of the Monet, Renoir sort. But a great painting nonetheless; worth a trip to the Getty.

Milqy! You're an art buff! Yes, the black is non-impressionist, as is the strong use of line, the formal posing, the lack of interest in light, and the formal artificiality of the background.

But Manet retained an interest in people and the human condition, which the Impressionists tended to downplay, so I rank him ahead of them.

I'd always thought of Manet as an impressionist...to me the painting has a flat, vivid, pastel-ish appearance that I find akin to something Van Gogh or Cezanne might create, even if the subject matter is different. What category (if any) would place it / him?

He experimented with Impressionism in his later works, specifically in his handling of (1) light, and (2) color, although his distinct handling of LINE never really disappeared. The influence of Impressionism can be seen in the great later works.

You can see this especially in the Argenteuil paintings. And in his famous "portrait" of Zola's Nana, where color and light is fused with his older style. And in "A bar at the Folies-Bergère", where the treatment of the gentleman and background figures suggest Impressionism.


He straddled many periods. In a strict sense, one cannot pigion-hole him as an Impressionist in his later years, in spite of the visible influence.

Fans and bands may need an extra stamina boost this year. Coachella, one of the biggest events for pop fans, the music industry and the Mojave Desert, is expanding for the first time from one weekend to two and will feature 143 bands. By cloning itself into twin festivals, with identical lineups, spread over consecutive three-day weekends, it will easily rank as the highest-grossing festival in the world this year, according to Billboard magazine.

Last year's one-weekend event grossed $25 million in tickets. This year that figure is expected to jump to the $50-million mark by the time the event closes on April 22. Three-day passes cost $285 sans service fees, and all 150,000 passes were gone within three hours of the lineup being announced in January.

"There were enough buyers in queue to buy online that we probably could have added another two Coachella weekends, and another Stagecoach weekend," said Randy Phillips, president of AEG Live, which is equal partners with Coachella's promoter Goldenvoice in that event and its country music cousin, Stagecoach, coming the weekend after Coachella ends.

The Coachella footprint is not only getting larger, it's becoming permanent. This year AEG-owned Goldenvoice announced that it had purchased 280 acres of land that surround the Empire Polo Grounds. It signaled a commitment by the promoter not only to stay in the area but to continue to shape its surroundings.

I'm currently in LA right now and I saw the latest cover of Los Angeles magazine where the cover issue is on mixed-raced Angeleno youths especially those born during the riots. Plus those who have experienced the riots.

In one of America's most diverse cities, interracial relationships would be common.
