ARCHITECT: ARCHION ARCHITECTS
PROJECT: ‘ZEPHYR’ MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT
LOCATION: MANDALUYONG CITY, PHILIPPINES
SIZE: 5400 SQM
STATUS: CONCEPTUAL
Software used: Autodesk Revit and Adobe Photoshop

The Building is angled in a way as to maximize wind flow through the turbines as well as minimize heat gain. Though the turbines are the most visible “green” aspect of the design, many other aspects contribute to the sustainability of the design.

Technologies such as:
Rainwater harvesting and water recycling help reduce the developments impact on water resources.
Roof gardens and gardens reduce surface runoff
Selective Low-E glazing reduces heat gain and balances cost.
LED lighting for common areas to reduce operating costs and hear gain.
Power management systems to inform the tenants of power and water consumption are being considered for the project.

The project is being envisioned as part of a larger development to showcase sustainable technologies and practices that can be used without greatly affecting our lifestyles as a first step to the acceptance of sustainability in the local market.

I think this is the firm that designed the Calyx residences.

Proposals have been put forward for a shiny new and rather funky looking tower for the Mandaluyong City in the Philippines. The tower named Zephyr comes from the drawing slates of Philippine based architects, Archion Architects, and will stand at approximately 26-storeys in height.

Rising from a canopied base, the tower features glazing mixed with undulating, white concrete, balconied facades punctuated by deep recesses which house the buildings unusual looking wind turbines. As it reaches its peak the tower steps in on one side saving it from a box like look and is topped by a flat roof covered in a lovely roof garden for residents to go sunbathe on.

The undulating facades represent air-flows that the tower will harvest to power common areas within the tower. This is not the only eco-hugging measure designed in the tower, which is hoped to be a part of a larger development that will showcase the possibilities of sustainable development in the future, providing the Mayans are wrong about this year. If not it won't make much difference.

Other technologies in the tower include rain water harvesting and recycling, LED lighting in common areas which will reduce running costs as well as heat gain, roof gardens and gardens which reduce water run off and energy management units are being considered for residents to tell them how much energy and water they are consuming and possibly give them a good spank if they use to much.

The tower if built will be mixed use housing high end commercial space along with the all important shopping space to go melt the credit cards in on the lower floors, while the upper levels will house residential space with the possibility of the usual amenities such as gyms and the like thrown in for good measure.

Quite when or if the tower will be built is uncertain but it would be an eye-catching addition to the cities skyline.
