This is such messed up logic. We will only improve if we play more tests and not the other way round.

Thumbs up

Bevan arrives for Ctg Kings

Former Australia batsman Michael Bevan arrived in the capital yesterday to join Chittagong Kings, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise, as their batting coach.

Dean Jones, another former Australian batsman, will arrive in Dhaka today to join the same franchise as technical director.

Former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin, who is a national selector these days, has been appointed adviser of the Chittagong Kings while former national cricketers Mizanur Rahman and Saiful Islam have been named as bowling and fielding coach respectively.

Australian Dean Woodford was named as the fitness trainer of the franchise.

Meanwhile, West Indies superstar Chris Gayle will play for the Barisal Burners in five matches. Earlier it was said that the Gayle will be available for only the first two matches but since he will be available till February 15, he can have an impact on the Burners' fortunes.

Glitzy opening for BPL

Indian and local silver screen stars and singers will perform in the opening ceremony of the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 which will take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on February 9.

President Zillur Rahman will inaugurate the first edition of the competition involving six franchises -- Barisal Burners, Chittagong Kings, Dhaka Gladiators, Khulna Royal Bengals, DurontoRajshahi and Sylhet Royals.

The tournament proper will kick off on February 10 with Barisal Burners taking on Sylhet Royals at 2pm and Chittagong Kings locking horns with Duronto Rajshahi at 6.30pm.

“The duration of the opening ceremony will be nearly three hours and I hope everyone will enjoy it. The silver screen stars and singers from India and Bangladesh will perform in the show. There will also be a segment dedicated to the International Mother Language Day,” informed Gazi Ashraf Hossain, chairman of the BPL governing body, yesterday.

Bipasha Basu, Malaika Arora Khan, Ritu Parna Sengupta from India while Shamim Ara Nipa and Shibli Mohammad, Shakib Khan and Apu Bishwas from Bangladesh confirmed their participation in the opening extravaganza.

Indian singers Bappi Lahiri and Shaan also confirmed their participation along with Ayub Bacchu, Mila and popular band Miles from Bangladesh.

BPL opening ceremony tickets went on sale yesterday at the ten different branches of Dhaka Bank in Dhaka City only.

The opening ceremony will start from 6pm.

Meanwhile, foreign cricketers and experts have already started to arrive in the capital as Michael Baven, Dean Jones, Sanath Jayasuriya, Robin Singh, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan arrived in the capital while South African Herschelle Gibbs, West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Pakistani Azhar Mahmood are expected to arrive today.

TBH Bangladesh are so bad at tests as to cheapen the entire concept. They should play ODIs and T20's only. In 12 years, they havent even managed to become competitive, let alone win, against any proper side.

By that logic, Pakistan should just quit playing hockey at the Olympics, since they haven't won a medal since 1992.

TBH, Bangladesh is just 1 step behind other Asian teams in test cricket. Teams like Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka dominates the home series and gets destroyed on the away ones. Bangladesh actually have a better record and put up a good fight in away matches in the last 2 years (stats: cricinfo) than other Asian countries. Bangladesh needs to climb one more step which is dominating the home series.

But to do that, Bangladesh needs more matches... both domestic and international. 42 test matches in 8 years which means an average of 5-6 matches per year isnt enough for improvement....

Silly example. Pakistan's track record in Hockey is amazing. 4 world cups, x number of medals. So they have proven pedigree. The same cannot be said about Bangladesh in Cricket.

As for "better away", dude, Pakistan has (just recently) won in New Zealand, and on their last tours to England did win a test, ditto last tour of SA. Drew 1-1 in West Indies (against a full strength side, not what you guys beat which was WI E-side)...

After 70 odd tests, you have 35 odd innings defeats.

India or Pakistan or Lanka were never this bad. Pak was winning tests in England as early as 1954, 2 years after becoming a test nation. Refer to test #390. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/62776.html

Bangladesh's test team would NOT win the Pentangular Cup, Ranji Trophy et al. Accept it.

It's good to know that Pakistan has started performing better in "away" matches, cause bomb blasts and terrorist activities in Pakistan have reached such a level, there are no "home" matches for the Pakistani team anymore. No team in the world, nor international cricket council,is ready to send any official or player to pakistan.Accept it

We do. But that is besides the point. Obviously you cant debate cricket with me, or argue with the facts, so you try to be snide. Whether we play in UAE or elsewhere, we play competitively.

Bangladesh, with their comical players, couldnt beat Pakistan A, Pakistan U-19s or probably even Pakistan Women's X1. Impressive w/l ratio you have there.

Do you want to play Pakistan U-15s?

Undoubtedly Pakistan had a great 2011 and a good start to 2012, but things were not the same in 2010. In fact, in 2010 we performed much better in away test matches than Pakistan. Compare the matches Vs England and New Zealand. Whats more you guys lost every single ODI series as well. On the other hand, we beat England, New Zealand. I wont bother mentioning Zim and Ireland. Bangladesh had a bad 2011... doesnt mean we cant beat Pakistan let alone other teams. Our under19s and A team almost thrashed The English under 19s and Lions. We had a bad tour against Pakistan, admitted, but dont stretch it...

Yep. Instead if Bangladesh had played 100 tests than we would've seen some inprovement. Umpires al so seemed very biased against a team like us as seen in the last test against Pakistan

True that. It will take some more time. 11 years isnt enough. That and the average age of the squad is very low. There are quite a few other players who are playing well in the domestic circuit. Once the make it to the team the situation will only improve.

In any form of cricket BD are minnows. They have been playing for a much longer time than it took other nations to start playing well and winning, that's true. But I don't see the point of coming here and starting this discussion, mintgum. Let them have their league, the people get entertainment and the sponsors make money. The players make money as well. What's there to dislike?

Couldn't agree more.

The Canadians aren't too good in professional football, yet it never stopped them from creating their own league and have a football culture, replete with their own rules and regulations.
