Yes, I realise that (didn't mean to imply a shortcoming in your choice of pic).

Incidentally, I think the South Warehouse still benefits from the previous permission for mixed use conversion that covered the entire site (although they might apply for an amended plan, as they have done for the North and Tobacco Warehouses).

The narrow passageway between the main and south warehouses is known as Pneumonia Alley - hardly a very salubrious address for any prospective residential buyers!

For sure. They have to do it carefully though or the building might lose its character. Happened to Tower House in Whitechapel in London which went from Spooky Victorian to looking almost pomo.

I was speaking to one of the directors of Peel and he doesn't think this will get off the ground. He can't quite see how they are going to get the necessary funds, regardless of RGF to make it a financially viable development (hence why they sold it in the first place)!!

ok, I am seeing the word "demoslished" in a Tobacco Warehouse thread and am getting very nervous. Can someone give a brief description of what is happening? They can't possibly be knocking any part of the Tobacco Warehouse down can they.

Also, will they be altering any of its facade? I love that facade. It is very authentic, not like the Stanley Dock.

Any updates appreciated.

It was confirmed today that it was started deliberately as well.

A BLAZE at the Heritage Market in Kirkdale was started deliberately, fire officers confirmed today.

Eight fire crews including an aerial hose were called to the old tobacco warehouse on Stanley Dock, Great Howard Street, around 8.10pm on Tuesday.

The fire started on the ground floor of the seven storey building and was well underway by the time crews arrived to contain it.

Smoke filled the streets around the building and police closed off Great Howard Street while firefighters worked.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service’s incident investigation team confirmed the cause of the fire was a suspected deliberate ignition.

They added a number of timber stalls were severely damaged by the fire and there was smoke damage to the rest of the building.

Heritage nutcases need to know that this is what happens when you bend heaven and hell to prevent any regeneration schemes that can save buildings. Lying derelict, eventually they come a cropper.

Great point! This will be lost on the likes of Wayne though.

The loony Wayne for example keep silence on St Andrews, Rodney St, for example, but ranted on his blog when (1) the after a long struggle to CPO the site, the council made emergency repairs and (2) finally after 30 years the building was handed to a developer. Weeks afterwards the building is well underway. Left any longer and we might have lost it. What weirdness goes on some people's heads I don't know.

Now all the rubbish left behind from the heritage market has gone up in flames, and the fire officers have confirmed that the structure is sound, there are no excuses for delaying with implementing the consent and building out the scheme.
