Stepping up for life with a long walk
The Standard
Tuesday, November 08, 2011

A man with a prosthetic leg and who is nearly 60 will take part in a 100-kilometer hiking test next week - and all because of a nurse he met 32 years ago.

Fung Kam-hung, who had been a sports teacher, thought his life was over after losing his left leg in a car smash.

"My life looked to be ruined," Fung said. "I never thought I'd be able to walk again, let alone take part in sports."

But then he met nurse Chong Bing- ying, who is also passionate about sport. During his time in hospital she kept up his spirits and urged him not think about quitting sport.

He recovered, was fitted with a prosthetic leg, and married Chong.

"It took an accident for me to meet my wife," he chuckled.

Fung said he had always wanted to attempt the Oxfam Trailwalker event, having been in support roles since 2008. He manned checkpoints to provide food and drinks to teammates.

"I found that my determination was reignited after I became a support team member," he said. "If it wasn't for my leg I would have taken part a long time ago."

Fung was proud to complete a full marathon in February, which gave him more confidence about taking part in Trailwalker.

He will team up with his wife and two friends who also have artificial limbs to walk from Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung to a holiday camp in Yuen Long next Friday. Although the organizer gives hikers 48 hours to complete the trek, Fung is determined to take just 27 hours.

He has been hiking from 20 to 30 kilometers four to five times a week to prepare for it. "A lot of people who train with me are amazed that I can walk so fast with a prosthetic leg," he said. "They thought I was a professional athlete."

He has a carbon-fiber leg that cost him about HK$10,000 as he heads for a walk that he hopes will motivate others who are disabled.

There will be 4,800 people in 1,200 teams in this year's Trailwalker. Oxfam hopes to raise HK$30 million for various relief programs.

Blazing trails with new eco routes
The Standard
Friday, July 27, 2012

Hongkongers will soon be able to enjoy guided tours of eight eco-heritage routes on Lamma and Hong Kong islands.

Since 2009, more than 2,400 people have joined three tours on Lamma Island, which were jointly developed by the Conservancy Association and Hongkong Electric.

Encouraged by the success of these tours, the organizers are adding five new ones - Aberdeen, Tai Tam and Lung Fu Shan country parks and northern and southern Lamma Island - in a bid to raise people's awareness of environmental protection and conservation. The tours will be launched in October.

Conservancy Association chief executive Ken So Kwok-yin said people can see interesting plants, endangered species - such as the short-legged toad which can only be found in Hong Kong - items of local history and even take part in a night safari on Lamma.

"We hope these eco-tours will educate people to treasure our environment," So said.

Items of interest include a 100-year-old stone bridge at Tai Tam Country Park, which reflects traditional British architecture, and Mo Tat Village School on Lamma, which shows how the learning environment was in the past.

Those joining the night safari on Lamma will be able to listen to the "frogs choir" from April to August.

So said more than 150 eco-tour guides have been trained to provide monthly eco- tours. Each tour will be conducted in Cantonese, cost HK$20, and last for three hours.

Catherine Sing Kit-tak, public affairs manager of Hongkong Electric, hopes people will join an online competition to pick the top eight eco-heritage spots out of 24 options and at the same time learn more about these eco-tours.

Current tours on Lamma are held on the first Sunday of every month.

The new tours will be launched on October 14, and be held on the third Sunday of every month.

To take part in the online voting campaign, from August 1 to 31, the public can log onto www.ghkg.hk/vote or click on the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/greenhkgreen).

The results will be announced in October.

An exercise in misguided logic
29 May 2011
South China Morning Post

Taking to Hong Kong's hiking trails is as much about being at one with nature as exercise. They are a pleasant, and for some people necessary, break from city life and all its noise and pressure. On them can be found peace, tranquillity and beautiful views. The last thing we expect is to find them infested with the urban trappings that we have gone so far out of our way to escape from.

Invariably and increasingly so, though, the countryside trails are in some places becoming an extension of Hong Kong's urban areas. Grass, dirt and rough stone paths are concreted and lined with railings. The barriers denigrate and block views. Administrators think this is what we want; for the majority of those intent on getting away from it all, it most certainly is not.

That is the view of 500 people who signed a petition against the Central and Western District Council's plan to put safety railings along the Hatton Road walking trail in Pok Fu Lam. Just 10 people have objected. Yet councillors, worried that they may face legal claims if there is an accident on the stretch, seem intent on pushing ahead with the project. They have asked the Department of Justice for advice.

Accidents can happen at any place and time. Care has to be taken when getting out of the shower to avoid slipping; hikers have to have the same wits about them when on Hong Kong's trails. Concrete and steel are no insurance policy against mishaps. Common sense guides people when hiking, just as it does in taking to our narrow footpaths, navigating crowded shopping districts and crossing streets.

Lawmakers and administrators should use the same logic when dealing with our countryside. Concreting country trails and fencing them is good business for contractors but damages the environment. They take away from the experience of being in a special part of our city. Natural surfaces put less strain on feet, legs and backs; warning signs are less visually intrusive and expensive than railings. To think otherwise is to pay scant regard for a precious natural asset.
