Hollywood Central Park (101 Freeway Cap)
The 44 acre plan to cap the 101 Freeway through Hollywood with a big old park (not to be confused with the Downtown 101 Freeway cap park) has a new website and a very dramatic digital flyover of the project. The project's website says they hope to start the environmental impact review process in the first quarter of 2012, with the Bureau of Engineering as the lead agency (previously, they'd told us they were starting in Q3 2010 with Caltrans as the lead agency, but whatever). The site also says that a working group with members from BOE, the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles, Councilmember Eric Garcetti's office, and the Friends of the Hollywood Central Park "has been meeting since May to prepare for the EIR."

That would be so cool. Not only do freeways take up so much valuable space but they divide communities.
That flyover is incredible, I had no idea the proposed park would be so huge.

A super idea in a 'hood that would benefit enormously. Hopefully it would spur investment in new and taller housing in an area that is very run down but in a nice location for redevelopment between Hollywood and DT. At worst, it would be an asset for the downmarket families in the area (assuming reasonable security).
But last I heard there wasn't any money and there still doesn't seem to be any. |

Wait, so the freeway will still be used? It's just being covered with a park?
Info on the Downtown 101 cap?

The freeway is "below ground" in that area so yeah, that stretch of it would become a tunnel with the park being on top of it. I guess that's what they mean by "capping" it.

Cool idea, though I do love riding my bike over the 101 clogged with traffic and waving. =P
Would there be lots of closures on the 101? |
