Pune-based valve manufacturing company Virgo Engineers Group is in the process of expanding its manufacturing capacity by setting up a new plant at Marg Swarnabhoomi, near here.

The Rs 700-crore company is a leading manufacturer of flow control valves and allied products predominantly for the oil and gas sector.

Spread over one lakh sq.ft., the company's Chennai facility is expected to cater to the “increased export demand and contribute Rs 100 crore to the company's turnover in the next three years.

Investment

Announcing the launch of the facility on Monday, Mr Jagdish Desai, CEO of the company, said Virgo has invested close to Rs 40 crore in the facility and will invest another Rs 20-25 crore to install machinery.

The company is planning invest a similar amount in setting up a foundry at its Coimbatore facility as a backward integration initiative. “This will give us a better control over the price and quality of the products besides ensuring guaranteed supply of valve castings,” he said.

The company, in the last one year, has invested close to Rs 90 crore in India in capacity expansion projects in its Pune and Coimbatore facilities and setting up this new plant. In addition, it set up a manufacturing facility in Italy and acquired an existing facility in Germany at an overall investment of €11 million.

Virgo currently has 13 sales offices in seven countries and manufacturing facilities in India, Italy, Germany and the US, and it has a base of over 2,300 customers across 72 countries.

Mr G.R.K. Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director of Marg Swarnabhoomi, who was also present on the occasion, said Virgo's is the fourth manufacturing facility at Swarnabhoomi. Danish pump manufacturer Grundfos, the UK-based cooling tower equipment manufacturer Vanspall and auto component manufacturer Polyhose have already set up facilities which are operational too, he said.

Besides, the company has signed with Eswari Electricals (to set up a 10,000 sq.ft of distribution facility); Twindisc for a 33,500 sq.ft. of marine transmission devices manufacturing facility; TVS Kwikpatch for a 10,500 sq.ft. space for auto components; and Techpro for manufacturing equipment for water treatment plants.

Virginia tech plans R&D centre

Irked over the inadvertent delay in the clearance of the Foreign Education Providers’ Bill, some of the global varsities are keen to set up their base in India through innovation centres.

These centres, which aim to provide the necessary base for research and development activity in the country, are being set up as stand-alone units of the universities.

Many varsities, including Virginia Tech of the US and a few from Malaysia and Australia, are exploring the option to take their baby steps into India through small R&D centres city. In fact, the first innovation centre of the Virginia Tech is all set to go live in a couple of months in the private special economic zone (SEZ), near Chennai being developed by MARG.

“The centre of Virginia Tech University will go live on January 26. This will initially employ about 50 researchers who will be working on nanotechnology and others,” said Mr G.R.K. Reddy, CMD of MARG group. The SEZ has earmarked about six lakh square feet of space for such innovation centres.
“We are also in tying with a few other Malay-sian and Australian varsities who are keen to set up such innovation centres in India,” he added.

It is reported that this move by foreign varsities is a result of the extraordinary delay in approving the Bill in the Parliament. Though the first draft of the Foreign Education Providers’ Bill was first drafted in 1995, it underwent a series of revisions with the final version getting approved by the Union Cabinet only in March 2010.

A parliamentary standing committee has submitted its final report to the Union HRD ministry and minister in-charge Kapil Sibal hopes to introduce the bill in Parliament in winter session starting from November end.

With the Central government outlining an ambitious target of achieving up to 30 per cent of gross enrollment ratio in higher education by 2017, end of the 12th five-year plan, many foreign varsities, especially from the US, are eyeing India as the next big opportunity.

Dismissing such innovation centres as a pressure tactics of varsities for an early passage of the bill, Dr M. Anandakrishnan, former Anna University vice-chancellor and chairman-IIT Kanpur said, “Many varsities have evinced plans for such research centres but they have not figured out a business model for that.”

However, a few others in the academic community feel that the Bill could give an opportunity for bright students to get quality education at a nominal cost.

Marg Group, US co to set up research centre near Chennai

Marg Group and Virginia Tech, US, are jointly setting up a Centre of Research inside the campus of Marg Swarnabhoomi, a huge residential complex on the East Coast Road.

The research, through Virginia Tech's Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, has identified Energy Harvesting, Cognitive Radio and Nano Technology as focus areas. These sectors are critical for improving living standards of people, says a press release issued by the Marg Group.

While Virginia Tech is engaged in graduate education, scientific and technological collaborative research, and scholarly outreach programs in different disciplines, Marg Swarnabhoombi also houses a number of residential institutions.

Tecpro Energy's manufacturing plant in Marg Swarnabhoomi

Tecpro Energy Systems is to set up a manufacturing unit at the Marg Swarnabhoomi SEZ to produce Proflex range of aeration products.

The company has entered into an agreement with Marg Ltd, which has set up the SEZ, to establish the facility at Marg Swarnabhoomi, according to a press release from Marg.

Tecpro is a manufacturer of aeration and pollution control products for use in sewage treatment and effluent treatment. The press release quoting Mr C.B. Jeevanantham, Founder Chairman, Tecpro Energy Systems, said, “The plant at Marg Swarnabhoomi will manufacture Proflex Diffuser used for diffused aeration in Sewage and Effluent Treatment Plants.”

Marg Swarnabhoomi's engineering SEZ caters to the needs of a diverse set of engineering companies. It has attracted the attention of a large number of engineering companies including global majors and MSMEs and SMEs.

I booked two flats in the year February 2009.
Having paid / invested the full amount, MARG until date (MARCH 2012) have not handed over the project as promised.

MARG was very clever in completing / getting the undivided share of land registered in 2011 itself.

MARG had out sourced many contractors from other states ( Bihar, Andhara, Gujarat) for carrying out civil / electrical/ plumbing / works etc. The quality of work is poor & sub-standard.

Swarnabhoomi is projected as SEZ.
I am really doubtful whether the project as projetced be completed on time or will this also fall in the similar catogery of 2G / ADARSH / delhi stadium.

MARG MoU with Central Institute of Technology

Infrastructure company MARG Ltd has inked a Memorandum of Understanding with Western Australia based Central Institute of Technology to offer vocational courses. As per the agreement, MARG has earmarked one lakh square feet at their prestigious project -- MARG Swarnabhoomi coming up on East Coast Road, near Chennai, the chennai headquartered company said in a statement.

Initially, Central Institute of Technology and MARG would offer vocational courses in the area of music business, architectural technology and building, civil, structural engineering and drafting. In the second phase, vocational courses in electronic engineering, mechanical engineering and drafting, mining and interactive multimedia would be added, it said. "The MoU with Central Institute of Technology (CIT) is a proud moment for us. The education city within MARG Swarnabhoomi will soon house leading International education brands from Australia, Singapore, UK, Middle East, US and Malaysia.", MARG Group CMD GRK Reddy said. The partnership with CIT is aimed at addressing the growing demand for quality vocational education in India, he added. MARG students showcase their creative brilliance

Fifty-six second year B. Arch students of MARG Institute of Design and Architecture Swarnabhoomi have come out with an exhibition in the city to showcase their art designs and innovative patterns. The exhibition, inaugurated at Lalit Kala Academi in the city on Tuesday, will be held till Sunday.

“We wanted to show the world what we do at Swarnabhoomi,” said C. Jeyashri, a second year student. She said the institute provides them an opportunity to look beyond the syllabus and try out newer things.

“If the class is about pottery and wood carving, we are given clay, wood and chisel to carve. If it is about villa designing, then they take us to the site and make us feel the place and show what is done there,” she added.

Goethe-Institut Chennai director Karl Pechatscheck, who inaugurated the exhibition, exhorted the budding architecture students to create a better life for the mankind and help all people to live in peace.

The guest of honour, R. Bhagwan Singh, consulting editor, Deccan Chronicle, praised the students for implementing MARG’s philosophy to ‘stay green’ by converting waste into attractive art pieces.

Calling for newer models of development to create an eco system, G. R. K. Reddy, chairman and managing director, MARG group, said the days of thinking about poverty alon, as a big crisis is gone.
