There is a fantastic example of new and old architecture in Barcelona, a façade like a cloud has been attached to the outside of an old tenement building, at night it lights up, almost like a sculpture, and i think there is a new glass build extension, cant find any pics but it looks great.

Currently this building... a 1905 Louis Kamper design has been destroyed (due to wooden frame interior
collapse), but the facade is currently being held up via metal scaffolding. The building is owned by Ilitch
Holdings (owners of Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, Little Caesars Pizza and MotorCIty Casino). So
there is hope that something interesting will be built behind the saved facade. Located on Detroit's
beautiful Grand Circus Park....

The Legacy in Chicago does this. You likely wouldn't know that The Legacy has co-opted the older buildings on Wabash St. though unless you were told.

This is the Legacy from the east side. The buildings I'm talking about are on its West side that serve as the entrance.

I think that facade's been standing like that for a while now. Do you know of any plans to build a new building behind it? Hopefully all the activity going on in Grand Circus Park right now will help speed up the process.

that was NOT THE ONLY WAY to save, but the ONLY WAY THAT INCOMPETENT ARCHITECT could save the old building on that position. not every architect should have right to do this kind of interventions. merging old + new structures requires great competence and great sense in therms or form, shaping, general aesthetics, materials...

i am surprised how u managed to quote all bad examples (well, not the worst but still...) of this kind of architectural interventions. there are so many good and great examples of how to do this job, but unfortunately none of presented here could fit into that category...

Detroit's Grand Circus Park is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, with the renovations taking place in the 34 story Broderick Tower, as well as the plans for the 18 story David Whitney Building.

But I believe that the Ilitch family (one of the richest in Michigan) will not do any renovations until they have the last parcels of property they need to build their new Hockey Arena for the Detroit Red Wings. Any other redevelopments of their property in that area until that happens just raises the price of the last few pieces of land that they need for their arena and other developments that they have stayed mum on. They've already mothballed the 18 story United Artists Building and Theatre, the Detroit Life Building, the Moose Lodge, and this... the former Fine Arts Building.
