It's true that the A380 facilitates hub operations at congested airports like Heathrow, whereas Boeing recognised early on that the future growth was point-to-point in smaller aircraft, but ultimately both manufacturers are offering solutions across the spectrum.

Indeed they are. The A350 is the Airbus equivalent to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner

The smaller variants of the A350 compete with the Boeing 787, and the larger variants overlap with the Boeing 777. Boeing also matched the A380 with the 747-8. Interestingly, since the sales launch of the A380 back in 2000, more Boeing 747s (of all types) have been ordered than A380s.

Took a short deter round the CTA this afternoon to sneak a peak. Naturally, the new building is imposing as you come out of the tunnel. It looks very glazed at the front under the canopy and the glazing on the skylights are incomplete but nearly there. There is an almost complete black wall, looks like graphite, on its North side, which is of course the temporary partition from where the phase 2 extension will be built.

According to the Capital Investment Plan released last Spring, the building it supposed to be weather tight by end of this quarter, so it looks like they're on track.

Isn't it due for 2014? I remember that seeming so long away when they announced it wouldn't be ready for the Olympics.

It looked like the main terminal was complete outside this week, they seem to have started one of the buildings with extra gates as well as there was some metal work up. Fitting the terminal building and testing the systems will take a while, they won't want a repeat of terminal 5, plus they may stop for the Olympics to make Heathrow look cleaner and less dusty.

New Heathrow Terminal 2 takes step forward
BBC News
29 February 2012

Quote:
Completion of major structural work on a new £2.5bn terminal at Heathrow Airport is to be marked with a topping out ceremony.

The finished Terminal 2 will open in 2014 and be capable of handling 20 million passengers annually.

It is part of a £4.3bn programme of development at the airport.

BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said the work "puts us within touching distance of a future where Heathrow has some of the best facilities in Europe".

He continued: "There's a lot still to do, but the opening of Terminal 2 could move Heathrow into pole position among European hub airports and allow us to set our sights on elite airports such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Incheon in Seoul."

The problem is already, and will be even more so, the connectivity between the terminals. They're basically separate airports sharing runways.

Until then, transfers won't be easy, which is what ruins the reputation globally. Not all transfers are within alliances, and BA are separate from most other OneWorld flights, and their own T3 flights too.

Extensions to the airside people mover from T5 would be a good start.

And lack of runway capacity.

The Thames estuary beckons.

Is the blackened north-facing side of the terminal left like that for future expansion?

Yes. Once phase 1 opens, T1 will close (or at least most of it) and the phase 2 extension will be built on the North side.

Crushing disappointment. I was trying to book parking at Terminal 5 for my business trip, but it's not offering business parking. It must be full or something. But I wanted to use the pod.
