Located on the banks of the Narmada river, Bharuch was a major trading centre as far back as the 1st century, it continued to grow and flourish until the 17th century, when it started falling into decline due to the development of Bombay as the premier port of Western India.

In more recent times, discovery of natural gas reserves and the subsequent establishment of GIDC Industrial estates at Ankleshwar, Jhagadiya, Vilayat, Panoli and massive development at the Port and SEZ of Dahej look set to help this region regain its former glory.

23 Nov 2011: Govt to accord Urban Development Authority status to Bharuch-Ankleshwar

The Gujarat government is all set to accord the status of a separate urban development authority to 302.24 sq kilometer area surrounding the highly industrialized towns of Bharuch and Ankleshwar, divided by Narmada river in south Gujarat.

Well-placed Sachivalaya sources said, the development authority would encompass in all 49 villages, out of which 16 villages are from Bharuch taluka and 27 villages are from Ankleshwar taluka. The proposal has been prepared by the state urban development department and is now pending clearance at the highest level in the Gujarat government.

"In all probability, it will be called Bharuch-Ankleshwar Area Development Authority, with powers similar to Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority," a senior government official told TOI.

The official added, "The authority will encompass the area adjacent to the special investment region, Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR), being developed between Bharuch and Dahej as part of Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. It will, however, not include Ankleshwar Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation estate."

Once formed, the authority will come up with a land-use plan, defining separate zones for residential, industrial and agricultural purposes. It will decide on infrastructure development of the area, even as coming up with several town planning schemes.

Bharuch district collector Roopwant Singh said, "A major reason why the proposal to come up with a new development authority for the twin cities of Bharuch-Ankleshwar has been floated is, most of the urban growth in Bharuch district has taken place outside the two towns. Between four and five lakh people live in the 302 sq km area, for which the development authority would be set up for planned urbanization."

11 Jan 2012: Bharuch-Ankleshwar set for a windfall

The twin townships of Bharuch-Ankleshwar are in for a windfall, say bureaucrats, who expect huge money to flow to them from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission-2 (JNNURM-2).

"The JNNURM-2, to be implemented in the 12th Five Year Plan currently being formulated by the Government of India, will focus attention on medium-level cities. The twin cities of Bharuch-Ankleshwar will, obviously, get priority," said an official, adding, "The Delhi-Mumbai Freight Corridor as well as the Express Way to Mumbai will pass through BAUDA. It cannot be ignored."

Formed adjacent to the biggest Special Investment Region (SIR) coming up in the western part of India, called Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR), already operational between Dahej and Bharuch, the official said BAUDA will "satisfy the residential needs for the industrial development taking place in PCPIR." Anywhere between 30 and 40 town planning schemes are proposed in the BAUDA area, which is spread out in 312 sq km.

BAUDA will be the ninth urban development authority of Gujarat. While all present urban development authorities are attached to the municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Junagadh, BAUDA is an exception. "Formation of BAUDA will facilitate formation of a Bharuch-Ankleshwar municipal corporation," said a senior official, adding, "Set up in one of Gujarat's fastest developing industrial and urban regions, BAUDA, as of now, will fix separate zones for development for industry and residential purposes."

"BAUDA will oversee planned development of roads, drainage, sewerage facilities and lights, apart from developing other infrastructure facilities in the entire area," the official said.

"As many as 85 villages of Bharuch district, apart from Bharuch and Ankleshwar towns, have been brought under BAUDA, which will have all the rights for land acquisition for infrastructure development that exist in the current Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act, 1976," he added.

The government formed an official-level committee for operationalizing BAUDA, with Bharuch district collector as its chairman. It would consist of the state urban development secretary, the chief town planner, the Bharuch district development officer, and presidents of Bharuch and Ankaleshwar municipalities as its members. The state government will shortly appoint a chief executive authority, fully responsible for implementing all the decisions taken by it with regard to BAUDA.

BAUDA was formed through a government resolution dated January 7, but made public on Tuesday.

16 Jan 2012: City bus service for Bharuch from 17th Jan

City bus services on six routes of the approved 12 will begin from Tuesday, making commuting for people within Bharuch town comfortable and cheaper.

"The project was ready and we were just waiting for a formal approval from the ministry concerned. We had received state's government's approval in December and on January 17 we will be starting the city bus services in Bharuch town," said Dushiyant Patel, MLA, Bharuch.

Nagarpalika Bharuch officials said, "Initially, buses will operate on six routes and later more routes will be added." Work orders for the first phase of the project have been allotted to Chartered Speed Ltd.

Till now, auto-rickshaws were the only means of public transportation in the city. There are over 500 auto-rickshaws in the city.

Six non air-conditioned mini buses equipped with required safety instruments and having emergency exit points will run on the city routes. Bharuch district collector Roopwant Singh said, "City bus services will reduce transportation issues in the city. The routes will be published for the public soon."

Construction of Bhadbhut barrage, part of Kalpasar project to begin by October 2012:Minister!!!

While replying a question on Kalpsar project, state minister Shri Nitinbhai Patel today said in Gujarat assembly that as per the plan made by the state government, construction of Bhadbhut barrage which is part of the Kalpasar project will begin by October this year.

Shri Patel said, “In first phase work, the government has planned to start Bhadbhut barrage construction by October this year.”

“Tasks like survey work, and technical arrangements are made to start the work,” he added.

“11 km long and 100 ft wide Bhadbhut barrage will be constructed near the mouth of Narmada river near Hansot. It will connect Hansot and Hazira through six lane highway,” the minister further said, adding that the initial cost of barrage will be around Rs 2500 crore.

The minister said that once constructed, the barrage will store more water than total water storage capacity of Saurashtra’s two big dams Shetrunji and Bhadar together.

He said that Bhadbhut dam will be connected to Kalpasar project through a 32 km long canal which is yet to be constructed.

About Kalpsar project, Shri Patel said that the project is very big.

“It’s not about building a small tank or a 15-20 km long pipeline, it is perhaps one of the biggest projects of its kind in entire Asia.”

“Various kinds of surveys are needed to be completed before kicking off the project. Moreover the project is planned for sea, and not for the land, therefore survey procedures take time which is obvious,” minister added.

He said the government is confident to complete all surveys by the end of this year and then proceed for central government approvals. The task of getting some approvals is going on at present, the minister said.

The minister said that Kalpasar project would prove more beneficial than Narmada project for the state.

As of news.. Ahmedabad Gandhinagar are already twin cities and will be connected by metro by 2014
its is necessary also as Ahmedabad is expanding rapidly.. places like adalaj and Chandkhera . that fell under Gandhinagar district are now part of Ahmedabad city and AUDA.. so if they don't make twin cities .. ahmedabad will eat up all places and Gandhinagar will have no space to expand..

Petronet to cash in on Gas demand, to fast-track Dahej expansion

The country biggest gas importer, Petronet LNG, plans to reduce the time for the capacity expansion of the Dahej terminal by more than a year to cash in on the huge domestic gas shortage. The company is working on a strategy to expand the terminal's capacity by 50 per cent to 15 million tonne by first introducing the regasifcation and marine facilities. This would enhance the capacity in two years, even without the storage tank.

In the previous quarter, the company's board had approved the expansion plan, which entails an investment of Rs 3,000 crore. Managing director and chief executive officer A K Balyan said, "There are three components for expansion. First is the marine facility expansion, with a jetty that is already underway. The second facility is storage tanks, and the third is a regasification unit. We want to introduce the regasification unit first so that we don't have to wait for storage tanks to raise the capacity….If we can prioritise things in the expansion plan at Dahej, we can get some advantage."

Storage tanks take about 40 months to come up. This is the longest among the three facilities, while the regasification expansion can be carried out in 24 months. The marine facility, along with the jetty, is critical to bringing in more ships. This would be ready by mid-2013.

Balyan said even before this expansion plan came up, the Dahej terminal operated at 110 per cent capacity. However, Balyan said, "Operating above the nameplate capacity is not recommended in the long run."

With this capacity, Dahej would be among the biggest LNG terminals globally. The UK has a terminal with a capacity close of to 17 million tonnes, Balyan said.

The country's gas availability has been declining for a while now, with a consistent fall in the country's largest gas-producing field KG-D6, which is operated by Reliance Industries and BP. The demand, however, has been rising sharply due to a surge in power and fertiliser demand.

This has prompted companies like Petronet to expand capacities at existing terminals and add new ones. The country's LNG regasification capacity is expected to rise from 13 million tonnes to 30 million tonne by 2015.

BASF India investing Rs 1,000 cr in Dahej unit

BASF India Ltd is investing about Rs 1,000 crore on a new chemical production facility at Dahej. The project is expected to be commissioned by 2014.

The board of directors of BASF today approved the proposal for setting up of a new chemical production site at Dahej.

It will be an integrated hub for polyurethane manufacturing and would have facilities for the manufacture of care chemicals and polymer dispersions for coatings and paper.

The total cost is estimated at Rs 1,000 crore which would be met through internal accruals and loans, the company said in a statement to the stock exchanges.

Fedders Lloyd Corporation (FLC) sets up Rs 200 crore wind turbine tower facility in Bharuch, Gujarat

Cooling products maker Fedders Lloyd Corporation (FLC) today announced its foray into wind turbine component sector by setting up a tower manufacturing facility in Bharuch district of Gujarat.

The B R Punj-promoted FLC has set up a wind turbine tower manufacturing facility, having annual production capacity of upto 250 towers, at Jambusar in Bharuch district of Gujarat with an investment of Rs 200 crore.

“We shall roll out the first wind turbine tower from our Jambusar facility by this month end. In the first phase, we shall be producing 150 towers annually for wind turbines upto 3 MW from here,” Nemichandra D Jain, Head, Wind Energy, FLC told PTI.

According to industry, the Government of India (GoI) has set up an ambitious target of having 20,000 MW of installed wind generation capacity under the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17), against the current installed capacity of 13,000 MW across the country.

The production of wind turbine components is projected to triple over the next few years as India aims to have an installed capacity of 4,000 MW annually over the next five years to achieve the 12th Plan target of 20,000 MW, industry sources said.

According to FLC, considering the organised players into wind turbine component manufacturing in India and the projected demand, there would still be shortage of 1,200 towers annually. The company is negotiating with a leading wind farm developer in US to jointly develop sites in India and South Africa and expects to seal a deal by June this year.

HCC emerges as best bidder for Narmada Bridge project

HCC has emerged as the best bidder to develop and operate the Vadodara-Surat (Narmada Bridge Bharuch) national highway project.

Sources indicated that HCC has offered a premium of Rs 222 crore a year to National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

The premium offered to NHAI will go up by 5 per cent every year. HCC will get to develop and operate the project for a concession period of 12 years. It will collect the toll revenues from the road users during the period.

The project cost, including land acquisition, rehabilitation and pre-construction activities, will be Rs 509.29 crore.

The main object of the project is to expedite the improvement of infrastructure in Gujarat and also to reduce the time and cost of travel for trafficbetween ‘Vadodara-Surat'. The stretch of Vadodara-Surat is an important corridor of the Golden Quadrilateral, which links two major cities of Gujarat leading to Mumbai and other parts of the country.

It will also increase the employment potential for the local labourers. The project is covered in Gujarat's Bharuch district.

Foundation laid for Rs 550Cr bridge over Narmada

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways C P Joshi laid the foundation stone of a Rs 550-crore four-lane bridge over Narmada river near Bharuch, coinciding with the Foundation Day of Gujarat on Tuesday.

With a six-lane approach road on either side, the bridge is expected to solve the perennial problem of traffic jam on the National Highway-8 near Bharuch receiving a high inflow of heavy traffic from nearby industrial estates as also from other states.

Speaking on the occasion, Joshi said while the bridge and the six-lane approach road would be constructed at a cost of Rs 509.92 crore, the central government had also given an assistance of Rs 40.50 crore for repair of the existing old bridge which was in a dilapidated condition and under the control of the state government.

Dahej Special economic zone records 864 crore export

BHARUCH: Dahej SEZ has exported goods to the tune of Rs 864 crore in the financial year 2011-12, an increase of 75% as compared to last year. Incidentally, it is only the second year of the SEZ's operation.

Dahej SEZ Ltd chief executive officer R J Shah told TOI on Wednesday, "In 2010-11, exports were to the tune of Rs 429 crore. We expect it to reach Rs 1,500 crore in 2012-13."

At present, 13 units of the 66 allottees are functional in Dahej SEZ. The other units too are going to become operational soon as the basic infrastructure - roads, electricity, water, drainage, etc, - have already been developed. Around 2,000 vehicles can be parked in a corridor near SEZ, said Shah.

Ankleshwar town to get a facelift

Citizens will soon enjoy a smooth ride in all 12 wards of Ankleshwar.

The Ankleshwar municipality has decided to spend Rs 45 crore to renovate, beautify, broaden and strengthen city's roads. Also, 65 new electric poles have been installed and will be operational soon.

Civic body president Sandip Patel said, "The amount of Rs 45 crore has been approved for a complete makeover of Ankleshwar city. The funds will be used for proper drainage system, cleanliness of city with dust machines, wall to wall flooring, paver blocks on the side of main roads, proper dividers and removal of encroachments."

Ankleshwar, which is rapidly developing, badly needs proper and broad roads. The work for Rs 4 crore is over while works worth Rs three crore are going on and road developing project of Rs 2 crore is in the pipeline. On both sides of roads, the municipality has planted suitable trees under public participation project and handed over the responsibility of each tree to the roadside shopkeepers.

"Senior officers from the municipality and elected members have personally approached shopkeepers to adopt each tree till it grows well. The nagarpalika has given a gardening contract to an agency," said Patel. Work for drinking water pipelines will start in June and will be completed in short period. About 65 electric poles with white snowlights are installed on all the main roads of the city while high mask lights are installed on the entry and exit points of Ankleshwar.

Bharuch district collector Roopwant Singh said, "58 villages of Bharuch and 36 villages of Ankleshwar including Bharuch and Ankleshwar cities will now be under the jurisdiction of Bharuch, Ankleshwar Urban Development Authority and hence both cities will have a fresh makeover."

VA Tech wins Rs 270 Cr effluent treatment plant order from Reliance

VA Tech Wabag Ltd has bagged an order worth Rs 270 crore from Reliance Industries, to set up effluent treatment plants at Reliance's Dahej and Hazira complexes.

According to a statement issued by Va Tech, Reliance Industries has chosen VA Tech Wabag for the construction of a 32.4 million-litres-a-day effluent treatment plant with recycle racility for their proposed PTA and PET Dahej manufacturing unit at Gujarat and tertiary treatment plant for Reliance's Hazira complex for an order value aggregating to around Rs 270 crore.

The effluent treatment and recycle facility at Dahej is expected to executed within 21 months.

As part of the Reliance order, the industrial water business group of Wabag would be executing two projects -- one on provision of side stream filters at Dahej and the other for construction of a tertiary treatment plant at Hazira, for a value of around Rs 20 crore.

The statement further said that for the first time in India, the proposed facility will benefit from a combination of advanced technologies from VA Tech Wabag.

This effluent treatment and recycle facility will have Anaerobic treatment using upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) technology followed by aerobic treatment using membrane bio-reactor (MBR) technology. This will be followed by recycling facility using memrane technologies such as ultra filtration and reverse osmosis. The effluent from the facility will be recycled and reused in the Dahej complex.

Dahej SEZ ranked among top 50 global free zones

Dahej Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has figured among the top 50 Global Free Zones of the Future in a study conducted by fDi Magazine that has surveyed 600 free zones across 120 countries.

Dahej is the only Indian free zone included in the list.

The magazine examined parameters like size, land available for development, expansion in land area, increase in employment in past two years, number of businesses operating in the zone, volume of goods processed, incentives offered, administrative services offered to assist investors, and facilities providing support for economic and industrial sectors.

The list includes zones from 24 countries like UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, China, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Philippines, Morocco, Latvia, Poland, Mauritus, Canada, UK, US, Russia, Kazakistan, Lithuania, Togo, Serbia, Croatia, Egypt, Macedonia and India. "We have planned to promote port development activities within SEZ and are also promoting the largest capacity desalination plant to be set up by the Consortia of Hitachi and Itochu of Japan and Hyflux of Singapore," said RJ Shah, CEO of Dahej SEZ Ltd.

Dahej SEZ exported goods worth Rs 865 crore in 2011-12, a rise of 102% over than Rs 427 crore in 2010-11. "The exports during current financial year is Rs 380 crore up to July, 2012 and is expected to cross Rs 1,200 crore in full year," Mr Shah added.

L&T Construction has bagged orders worth Rs 1,065 crore which include two major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects in the Petroleum, Chemicals, Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) of Dahej, Gujarat.

The water and effluent treatment business unit of the company has secured Rs 793 crore order from the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) for two water supply schemes. These two schemes of 50 MGD (million gallons per day) and 25 MGD respectively will supply water to the PCPIR, Dahej. The scope of work also includes construction of pump houses along with electromechanical and instrumentation works.

Country's longest extradosed bridge to come up over Narmada in Bharuch

A new bridge that bears a similarity to the famous Golden Ears bridge in Vancouver, Canada, will soon be constructed across Narmada river in Bharuch. This will be the first “extradosed bridge” to be built in Gujarat and the “longest” in the country.

The four-lane bridge is part of a larger project involving six-laning of a section of National Highway-8 between Vadodara and Surat. Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) Concessions Ltd, a subsidiary of HCC, was awarded the Rs 650-crore project by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The entire project is scheduled to be completed in 36 months’ time.

“The bridge across the Fraser river in Canada has five spans. This bridge over Narmada will have 10 spans and will be about 1.3 kilometers in length. It will be coming up next to the existing two bridges on the river,” said a spokesperson of Hindustan Construction Company.

“This will be the first extradosed bridge in Gujarat. Presently, three such structures exist in India. But the span of 144m for the Extradosed bridge in Gujarat on Narmada will be the longest in India,” the spokesperson, who requested not to be named, told The Indian Express.

The first extradosed bridge in the country (over 196 metres long) was built for the Delhi Metro between Pragati Maidan and Indraprastha over railway tracks.

The bridge will have stay cables as a part of extradosed structural system. It will be having eight spans of 144m length and two end-spans of 96m length each.

“Considering the soil strata, flow and monsoon in Narmada, the construction of foundations in working window is a major challenge. A very high degree of quality and safety control will be required during all the stages of construction,” the official added.

This bridge will not only serve the traffic from the ports of Hazira and Dahej, but will also cater to the heavy flow of industrial traffic on the Golden Corridor between Ankleshwar, Bharuch, Surat and Dahej SEZ. The development will also remove a significant bottleneck and facilitate free movement of traffic.

The project includes rehabilitating the old bridge which was built over the Narmada in 1977. The bridge caters to light vehicles only. Once both the bridges are ready, there will be eight lanes available for traffic movement.
