They're dark because I made them that way...
I prefer not to do long exposures for a couple of reasons: (1) I don't have a tripod, and I don't want any blur in my images. (2) I don't like the washed-out look with longer exposures (see below for example). image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr

Day 16 of 16
Finally here—the last day of the trip. I wanted to savor as much of urban Tōkyō as I could before I left, so I stayed in the center of the city the whole day. Dragging my luggage with me, I first headed to Shinagawa to drop my belongings in a locker. Since I choose to fly out of Haneda on the way back home, Shinagawa was the logical choice. After dropping my luggage off, I was off to Ame-Yoko (Ameya Yokochō), a famous shopping street near Ueno. Catching a Keihin-Tōhoku Line train:
image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr As I was standing inside the train, though, I caught an unusual “sight” out of the corner of my eye while passing Tōkyō Station… It certainly wouldn’t have caught the attention of your average passenger, but as someone mildly knowledgeable about trains, I couldn’t resist and got off at the next stop, Kanda. I decided to wait patiently here to see if I could get some shots. As I waited, I snapped some other random photos… This is construction for the Tōhoku Through Line, which will bring the longer-distance JR trains from Saitama and Ibaraki back down to Tōkyō Station. Japan really knows how to build them: this is being constructed directly above the in-service Shinkansen tracks. image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr

Continuing my streak of luck, an E5 series Hayabusa came gliding by just when I was at the station.

Still biding my time, one of the JR staff came by to tell me it would only be a few more minutes…

It’s here!
![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr If you don’t know what this is, it’s one of the most sought after camera subjects for railfans, which is why I was so surprised to spot it outside the window… The E655 series Nagomi—most popularly known as an “Imperial train”, sometimes used by the Emperor and other members of the Imperial family when traveling by train. This was especially built by JR East for Imperial use, but is also used as a really high-class charter train at other times. I knew I was probably never going to get another chance to take a picture of it, so I absolutely had to get off at Kanda. ![]() I later found out it was actually Crown Prince Naruhito on board, not the Emperor, heading to some event in Yamanashi. Given the Emperor’s sickness of late, the Crown Prince was filling in this time. Unfortunately, that was my best shot… All the spots at the end of the platform were already taken up. image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr

After a morning of surprises, it’s back to the regularly scheduled programming…
Parking meter around Ueno Station I never really noticed until this trip, but it’s really hard to find any parking meters in Tōkyō (understandably, of course). The only other place I saw that had them was Omotesandō. image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr Here we are, Ame-Yoko—a working-class shopping street in Japan, right underneath the JR tracks. My first time here (it’s not as glamorous as other Tōkyō landmarks), but this is a pretty famous place for tourists, and you always hear a lot about it. image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr

![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr I think Japan gets a bad rap sometimes for being too ethnically “homogenous”... So it’s always heartening to see the bits of diversity here and there. image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr

There are lot of cheap eats here, and after a few quick minutes searching, I settled on this place, run by what looked like a family from the mainland… They do Shanghai-style fried 小笼包 (xiaolongbao soup dumplings).
![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr There’s only three small tables at the place… It’s really hole-in-the-wall, but I suppose it doesn’t really matter since it’s just a snack. Next door was a Korean grocery store: image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr Delicious. They cook it fresh, so you have to wait a bit, but the soup is fantastic and the bottom is very crispy. ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Untitled by quashlo, on Flickr
