Kyrie Irving weighs up Aussie Olympic possibility
![]() Roar Rookie By Reece Jordan, 21 Jan 2012 Reece Jordan is a Roar Rookie Tagged: besketball, london 2012 Tweet thisEmail to friend0 Have your say Receive a Roar cap!! Simply write an article on cycling by the 20th January and we'll send you one of our beautiful Roar fitted baseball caps. Submit your article here. The Boomers have a chance to snare the talents of Cleveland Cavaliers’ point guard Kyrie Irving at the London 2012 Olympics if recent comments by the Australian-U.S. dual citizen are anything to go by. Earlier this week, when asked about representing Australia at the 2012 Olympics, Irving replied, “That’s probably my only choice right now.” After missing the cut of the 20-team U.S.A. finalists, you could probably take that ‘probably’ and make it a ‘definitely’. Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia while his father played for the Bulleen Boomers before relocating to the United States at the age of two. He holds dual-citizenship, and despite representing the United States in the under-18 world championship, is eligible to represent Australia in the men’s division. The dilemma the 2011 #1 draft pick has however, is deciding what is best for him in the long-term. While Australia yields a solid spot for Irving straight away and all but guarantees a place in the team for most of Kyrie’s playing career, he also has the option of waiting until 2016, when he is much more likely to be in the pool of Team U.S.A. players. Playing for Team U.S.A. would allow Irving to walk into a team with an array of NBA stars and a gold-medal pedigree, as well as having his coach at Duke, Mike Krzyzewski, who coaches the Americans. Of course, if Kyrie Irving chooses to represent Australia in 2012, he cannot represent the United States at all following that. However, Irving also hinted at the lengthy process involved with letting him play for Australia if he so desires. “Honestly, it’s going to be a process if I decide to play for Australia. A lot of things have to do with FIBA and Australian lawyers, but I’m not ruling out that possibility of playing with the Australian team.” Anyone who followed the Andrew Bogut-Sydney Kings saga during the lockout will get a little nervous when they hear things like that, but we can only be hopeful. Kyrie acknowledged the importance of the decision earlier this week saying, “It will be a long-term decision, and I’m hoping to know in the next month or so. I’ll keep you updated.” Given that Kyrie Irving has put up averages of 17.7 points and 5.2 assists so far in his rookie campaign, we Australians can only hope that those updates will be full of green and gold rumblings. |

That's the type of team pride we wan't. I can't make the dream team but if I have to, I'll maybe play for a place I left when I was 2. I'm so excited about the chance of us getting him onboard, I hope the Australian Olympic team bend over backwards to treat him like the star he is.

Liking the idea of a Patty Mills/Kyrie Irving backcourt with Bogut at center crashing the boards.

Young Aussie cyclists vanquish Britons at London Olympics test event
https://sslcam.news.com.au/cam/autho...-1226275363167 AUSTRALIA'S Boys Wonder, the youthful world champion pursuit team, put Britain's aging Olympic champions to the sword to win the World Cup event at the new London Olympic velodrome today. Led by inspirational 22-year-old individual pursuit champion Jack Bobridge, the Australian quartet, with an average age under 21, set the second fastest time in history, 3min 54.615sec to vanquish their main rival for the Olympic gold medal in August. The British were half a second ahead over the first few laps but the Australians belied their youth, holding their composure and steadily wrenching the ascendancy from the hometown favourites, who had the advantage of a sellout crowd behind them. After 1000m the Australians were back on level terms and they proceeded to grind their opponents into the boards over the last three kilometres, eventually winning by a whopping margin of 1.715 seconds. |

Irving won’t play for Australia in Olympics
12 hours, 49 minutes ago tweet33 CLEVELAND (AP)—Cavaliers rookie Kyrie Irving won’t play for Australia in the London Olympics this summer. Irving was born in Australia in 1992, while his father was playing professional basketball in Melbourne. He holds dual U.S. and Australian citizenship, making him eligible to play for either country under FIBA rules. Irving said Monday night, after Cleveland lost to Utah 109-100, that he will remain with Team USA. He hopes to make the Olympic team in 2016 and play again for Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. Irving said he received confirmation that Krzyzewski will coach Team USA in four years in the Rio Olympics. Irving played for Krzyzewski at Duke last season before becoming the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. “It was the right decision,” said Irving, who has represented the United States in junior competition. “I found out Coach K would be coaching in 2016. It made my decision so much easier to play for my coach again. That was the deciding factor.” Irving, who will turn 20 on March 23, is the top contender for NBA rookie of the year honors. He leads rookies with 18.6 points per game and is second to Minnesota’s Ricky Rubio with 5.1 assists. Irving, the centerpiece of the Cavaliers’ rebuilding project, is shooting 48.3 percent from the field. He was the MVP of the Rising Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star weekend. |

How many days now? This all seems a bit rich now with the UK in recession and all. Maybe they should postpone it for a year or two until things are looking a bit better.
