We might see something by tomorrow or anytime from now. The local media is scheduled to have a tour of the flying eye medical center on Tuesday.

The airport has a single asphalt runway (02/20) which is 2,500m (8,203ft) long, 45m (148ft) wide and capable of handling aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 747 or Airbus A330. The runway is fully compliant with International Civil Aviation Authority standards (instrument landing system and runway lights) and is ready for international operations subject to ICAO inspection.

an PAL Airbus330 landed, see few posts above..a relatively same length size and wingspan of a B747.

depends ... landing? or takeoff? ... empty or fully-loaded and fully-fuelled?
hot day or cold day? btw, what's the runway AMSL elevation of ILO? it goes
into the calculation, too.

if A330 can take off there, good chance an 747 can. no problem landing an
empty plane, though. if it can, then sooner or later, a carrier will.

Sir, sources say it is capable of handling B747.. I was hoping it meant it can handle both landing and takeoff because what's the point of making it capable of only either one? I mean why would a plane land there if it can't take off again or how can there be one taking off when it can't land on the first place? Then why would an airline use a big plane if it can land or takeoff only if it's half-full? wouldn't they use smaller planes instead?

I hope these considerations come into mind when runways are built and when they make announcements that an airport can handle such planes. I'd appreciate any input regarding this.

the Ilo runway is 2500 x 45 meters made of asphaltic concrete surface.
is that long enough if all 747's issues are factored in?

If Princess Juliana Airport of Saint Maarten Can handle B747 with only 2,300 M long I have no doubt that ILO can handle much better. or just depends to Pilot skills

I found this on Wiki:
I dont know if this accurate...

Required runway at Maximum Take Off Weight

747-100B/747-200B 10,466 ft (3,190 m)
747-300 10,893 ft (3,320 m)
747-400 9,902 ft (3,018 m)
747-400ER ER: 10,138 ft (3,090 m)
747-8I 10,138 ft (3,090 m)

Maybe ILO can handle 747s that are not fully loaded...
IMO, Just to be safe for 747s....I think the runway in ILO should be extended beyond 3KM

This is a first-hand account:

I have landed at and taken off from SXM aboard a fully-loaded - with passengers, at least - B747-400. And I am sure its runway is shorter than ILO's, and dangerous too, with a beach resort full of half-naked fools who love getting farted at by jumbo jets at one end, and a fairly high mountain range on the other.

for starters, Airplanes When landing and taking off doesn't use all of the runway's length. if they do, it means they OVERSHOT it..hehehe

Basta ang importante, the weather, the weight and the pilot's diskarte. That's why we have PAPI, which is helpful in visual landings, or those piano keys as thresholds for landing for aid. Pero nasa kamay pa rin ni el kapitan and his first officer.
