A rail link to Mysore’s history

Quote:
Long before a state-owned railway department was established in the country, Mysore had its own railways. Administrators of the erstwhile Mysore State established the Mysore State Railway (MSR) to focus on rail development in the state when the entire rail network in India was owned by private companies.

Two years after Chamaraja Wadiyar was proclaimed the ruler of Mysore State, MSR took up a project to lay rail line between Mysore and Bangalore in 1870. However, the project was later put on hold. MSR was constituted to focus on railway development on the lines of Madras Railway Company which laid a rail link between Royapuram and Bangalore City.

By 1881, when Wadiyar became the king, MSR had opened 58 miles of rail lines for traffic. During his 13-year rule, he added 315 miles investing Rs 164 lakh, according to Mysore Gazetteer.

The state which was languishing under acute famine, focused on rail network and irrigation works as means to overcome the problem. Wadiyar also took a loan of Rs 20 lakh to build the railway network.

However, shortly later, all the lines laid and operated by MSR were handed over to Southern Mahratta Railway Company as maintaining the lines became a burden on the state exchequer.

When Maharani Vani Vilas became the regent queen, she continued to invest in developing railway infrastructure. The Birur-Shimoga line was constructed during her tenure of seven years by spending Rs 23 lakh. The line was opened for traffic on December 1, 1899.

It was during the rule of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar that a railway construction department was set up. Mysore administrators signed a new contract with the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company for the operation of the lines constructed by the Mysore State Railway in 1908.

In 1911 the Mysore State Railway Construction Department was established under then chief engineer E A S Bale.

The railway secretariat was branched out from the public works department and was set up as a separate organization in 1912. After Independence, consequent to reorganization of railways, MSR was taken over by the Union government on April 1, 1950.

The rail lines built by MSR were allotted to the Southern Railway, which was formed merging Madras and Southern Maharatta Railway, Mysore State Railway and Southern Indian Railway.

Mysore division unveils its model railroad layout

Quote:

The layout, spread over 200 sq. ft, showcases miniature working models of trains and landscape

Depicting the railway system in the Mysore division on a smaller scale, the model railroad layout — reckoned to be the first in the country — was thrown open to the public here on Friday.

The concept is a rage in advanced countries and entails showcasing miniature working models of locomotives, trains, signalling system, complete with the route and the surroundings.

The rail network in the Mysore division is depicted in the model with focus on Mysore, with a working model of an imaginary rail system in Kodagu too, even though Kodagu is not served by the Railways yet.

The scale models include the rolling stock, tracks, hillocks, bridges, tunnels, roads and some of the popular landmarks of Mysore and surrounding regions, including the palace, the Lalitha Mahal, St. Philomena's Church, the Krishnaraja Sagar, Chamundi Hills and the temple, K.R. Circle, Mysore zoo, etc. .

Plantations

In addition to Mysore, the railroad model also depicts the coffee plantations of Kodagu. The region was included in the model because the engineering-cum-traffic survey for a new broad gauge railway line from Mysore to Madikere via Kushalnagar was inaugurated in December 2011. The entire layout, spread over 200 sq. ft, is lit with nearly 500 bulbs and the Mysore railway station is the first in the country to create a railroad model, which has been depicted in the heritage gallery on Platform No. 1.

The concept was mooted by senior divisional commercial manager Anup Dayanand Sadhu while a city-based hobbyist Ramji Swaminathan, an expert in model-making, chipped in with his ideas and collections, spending nearly Rs. 8 lakh in pursuit of this concept.

The railroad model was inaugurated by A.H. Vishwanath, MP, and Mr. Sadhu.

Yes you are right Naveen...its confusing...already they are adding 2 coaches to Udyan express in Solapur and i believe its in effect since 9-10 years now....

I think its a demand for new superfast train from Solapur to Bengaluru via Gulbarga

you are right partly, yes there is new train coming up from solapur to blr via gulbarga ( superfast) and regarding udyan before 4-5 years about 4-5 coaches were added in solapur to Udyan express, but from last 4-5 years these coaches are coming directly from mumbai, and only 1 general compartment is being added in solapur... but my question is do we have enought room to add more compartments to Udyan ??? as the train already has 12 Sleeper coaches, 5-6 Ac coaches(3 tier, 2tier and 1st AC), 3 general coaches.... do not know how many coaches a train can pull :-)

Railways' emergency helpline

Quote:
In a bid to reduce the response time during emergencies and avert potential damage, the Indian Railways is planning to introduce a common three- or four-digit helpline across the country.

The concept of the Railway Security Messaging System will be similar to that of the police control room (100).

Disclosing this to The Hindu , P.K. Mohandas, Divisional Security Commissioner, Railway Protection Force (RPF), said, “The idea is to help elicit information from passengers onboard the train or at stations in case they come across any suspicious persons, unclaimed luggage in the coach or unidentified objects.”

The concept entails having a nodal authority functioning on a 24x7 basis and headquartered may be in New Delhi from where the message would be relayed to the appropriate zonal or divisional headquarters to plan and coordinate their response.

Fine tuning

The plan would be unveiled in due course after fine tuning the details as it involves working out and finalising the logistics and procedures to be followed depending on the exigency, the Divisional Security Commissioner said.

He also said that the personnel had to be trained to respond appropriately under different situations.

Aim is to reduce response time and avert potential damage

Integrated security system to be implemented in nearly 200 stations

I welcome B`lore-Gulbarga superfast train proposel by Shri.MK,considering the no of people travel fr business/employment to-fm the Gulbarga to B`lore.but their dependable transportation is Bus,if the SF train(with pantry car) in place no doubt connectivity & travel to state capital is going to be convinent & ecnomical, hopefully the travelling time may reduce fm SBC presently ar.11 hrs to (say)8hrs by SF.

More than Bangalore-Gulbarga what we need is a bangalore-Bellary and Mysore-Gulbarga-Udyan and Karnataka both have quotas under Gulbarga whereas Basava serves Gulbarga too completely

We can actually have a Bangalore-Bellary inter city express using the rake of Chamundi that idles the whole day on Platform 6 of Bangalore City-just one more rake and creating a RSA between them will help

from Mysore we can have a train via Arsikere-Chijajur-Bellary-Guntakal to gulbarga-Mysore being such an important place is very poorly connected inside Karnataka itself

At present the maximum coaches locos pull are 24-though they can be extended bit more its the platform length that causes a constraint here from increasing the coaches-Udyan gets a WDP-4/WDP-4B link generally and it can easily haul 24 coaches{WDP-4 is link of prestigious trains like Bangalore-kacheguda Express(24 coaches), Coimbatore-LTT Express(21 coaches), Udyan Express, Yeshvantapur-Kacheguda Express(21 coaches) and also trains like Parasanthi, Basava, Gol gumbaz, Hampi and Rani chennamma}

I believe Hampi express and Hospet - SBC fast passenger currently serves only to Bellary & hospet. And let me tell you dear SS87, there is lot of difference in having a quota in train going to else where and train starting or serving to specific area only. Agree Udyan, Karnataka express have special quota for gulbarga & Basava serves 90% to Gulbarga people. But what is need of the hour is one fast express ( garib rath is welcome) which can reach Bangalore in morning hours say at 6 or 7 AM so that all the officals works would not be hampered, And Basava reaches at 10:00 to YPR, udyan at 9:00.
I totally support your demand of having Bellary to Bangalore, but it cannot be at the stake of Gulbarga- Bangalore.

Hmm ok that Gulbarga to needs a train-but a SF at what speed??

The distance is about 580 kms and the entire section barring a few places is single line-the fastest train between these places is Karnataka Express which takes 10 hrs 20 mins from Bangalore-I dont think a train can run faster than this considering the terrain , single line territorry and unelectrified

As a pair to Karnataka we can have a train on return from Gulbarga starting around 8Pm to reach SBC at around 6-this can be routed via Yeshvantapur to save time on joining the main track at Baiyappanhalli-this can also take the Kallur route bye-passing Gooty and direct route bye-passing Puttaparthi

If its feasible to introduce such a train then Railways can go well ahead with it-they shouldnt introduce a Superfast just for sake of introducing a train(The current timings of the to be introduced Howrah Express from Mysore is best example of how timings mustnt be

Let them request projects for Karnataka Including mangalore. Let some trains run from Mangalore to other parts of Karnataka. We call our city as "Mangaluru or kudla" We cannot allow mangalore to become Mangalapuram due to Palakkad division
