As per plans, Advaya Hospitality services will be located in key cities that include New York, Miami, Atlanta, and Phoenix in the US and Chennai, Tuticorin, Kakinada, Vizag and Vellore in India. It will be later expanded to China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Brazil.

Firstobject Technologies commences its 100 seater facility at Kakinada

Firstobject Technologies has commenced the operations of its 100 seater facility at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh (AP). The new facility was inaugurated on 13 March 2011, the company conducted pilot runs which proved successful and full-fledged operations commenced from 26 March 2011.
The company had commenced its operations in a very small way one year ago at STPI, Kakinada. The small facility has now been expanded to A 100 seater capacity on 24X 7 basis. The company caters to its clients in BPO, Education, IT/ITES activities from this facility.

Infotech starts operations at new Kakinada development centre

Hyderabad, Oct 3 (PTI) Infotech Enterprises Limited, a city-based Engineering Services company, today said it has started operations at the new development centre at its facility in the IT-SEZ, Sarpavaram, Kakinada, from September 30.

The facility is an extension of the company's business strategy of taking advantage of SEZs and fostering inclusiveness by putting up development centres in Tier- 2 cities, it said. "The first phase has been completed in record time of four months. From 150 seats (at present) we would be adding another 250 seats and operating it in two shifts. The 300-people Centre would grow to 800 people by January 2012," said B Ashok Reddy, President, Global HR and Corporate Affairs, Infotech. This is Infotech's sixth facility in India (it already has 2 at Hyderabad, 1 each at Bangalore, Noida and Vizag).Infotech commenced operations in Kakinada early in February 2007 from STPI's incubation centre.

Over 30 per cent of Infotech employees in Kakinada are women and over 90 per cent are locals. The development centres at Kakinada largely caters to Infotech's Oil and Gas customers around the world.

$970 million LNG developemt to be located off the East coast of India
Terminal will have an annual capacity of 3.5 million to 5 million tonnes
GAIL Gas Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, has agreed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Andhra Pradesh to develop a new LNG terminal off the coast of the East Indian state.

The proposed floating facility, to be located near Kakinada, would have an annual capacity of 3.5 million to 5 million tonnes, according to UpStream Online.

The estimated cost of the project is expected to be in the region of 50 billion rupees ($US970 million).

The new development would also incorporate a floating storage and regasification unit, according to a statement released by parent company GAIL Ltd.

Last week, an interim pact for the project was signed by GAIL Gas chief executive Shri Wason and Andhra Pradesh’s principal secretary for investment and infrastructure Shri Bhattacharya.

GAIL Gas Limited is currently in the process of recruiting an upstream partner to help in the development of the terminal.

The project is expected to be completed by 2013.

KAKINADA, FEB. 22:
The gas-based 2,400-MW power project being constructed by Reliance at Samalkot in East Godavari district, is ready for commissioning, according to a press release issued by General Electric, the equipment supplier for the plant.

GE says in the press release that it has supplied six gas turbines and three steam turbines for the plant and the company has deployed a large number of engineers and technical staff for testing and commissioning the project. Mr John Flannery, President and CEO of GE India, has said the company has signed a 15-year contractual service agreement with Reliance with performance guarantees.

It ensures predicatable maintenance costs and steady flow of revenue, adds the release.

Mr John Flannery says that GE will play a crucial role in supporting the country's power generation projects and in bridging the demand-supply gap. GE has deployed equipment and personnel at more than 700 sites.

Samalkot plant is the largest gas combined cycle project in the country.

Kakinada old port back in action after revival of rice exports

KAKINADA, APRIL 20:
The Kakinada anchorage (old) port, languishing for the past three to four years, received a shot in the arm during 2011-12 financial year, with the Union Government deciding to lift the curbs on non-basmati rice exports.

The lifting of ban on rice exports could not have come at a better time.

From September 2011, till the end of the financial year, nearly two million tonnes of rice was exported through the old port.

The workers, steel barge owners and the trade dependent on the old port heaved a huge sigh of relief.

OTHER COMMODITIES

According to the Port Officer, Mr B. Adinarayana, apart from 19,82,628 tonnes of rice, 1.42 lakh tonnes of sugar was also exported from the port during the year.

Besides, 9,36,389 tonnes of maize was exported and 40,000 tonnes of cement.

On the whole, the old port handled 31.48 lakh tonnes of cargo during the year valued at more than Rs 5,800 crore.

“It is quite a creditable achievement and it was badly needed at that juncture, as the port was suffering for want of cargo,” he said.

REVENUE

In all, 195 vessels sailed from the port during the year and the port earned a revenue of Rs. 24.16 crore during the year.

Expressing happiness over the revival in the fortunes of the port, the Chairman of the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce, Mr D. Surya Rao, said that nevertheless, certain infrastructural problems plagued the port during the year.

The roads leading to the port should be improved and all steps should be taken to remove bottlenecks.

INFRASTRUCTURAL PROBLEMS

Trade sources also said the State Government as well as the Union Government should take long-term measures with regard to the anchorage port and the fortunes of the port should not depend on a single commodity such as rice.

In view of the large number of workers dependent on the port, the Government should take the long-term view, it is felt.

Mr Adinarayana said steps would be taken soon to improve the infrastructure at the port.

Kakinada, Rawa port anchorage fee hiked

The state government has introduced a steep increase in the anchorage fee for ships entering Kakinada and Rawa ports. While Kakinada Anchorage Port primarily handles rice exports, Rawa serves as a captive port for oil operations for companies like Reliance. Till now the government has been charging Rs 750 per day for both the Kakinada and the Rawa ports.

Infrastructure and investment principal secretary Sutirtha Bhattacharya recently issued orders increasing the fee to Rs 1,000 per day, a 30 per cent hike. The decision comes in the wake of increased cargo operations in Kakinada after the Centre permitted the export of rice. About 20 lakh tonnes of rice have been exported recently. “Each ship is anchored for a minimum of 15-20 days,” director of ports Muralidhar Reddy said. Some stay put for more than two months.

Maintaining that the cargo operations would not be hit, Mr Reddy said the government would also get revenue from overseas ships using the anchorage port for assembling floating rigs and maintenance for two to three months. The shipping agencies and exporters, however, cry foul over the government increasing all fares relating to the anchorage port. A few days ago, the department hiked the warehousing fee from Rs 88 per tonne to Rs 100.

Additionally, the stevedore license renewal was changed to every year in place of the current validity period of four years. The government fixing the anchorage fee based on the VPT also came as a surprise to the stakeholders. “As we don't have a regulatory authority for state ports, we adopted VPT rates,” I&I principal secretary told this newspaper. The shipping agencies, however, object to equating Kakinada port to VPT, which is a fully developed port with huge infrastructure. “The government is neglecting the anchorage port. Despite increasing its revenues, the government is not improving infrastructure or facilities,” Mr P.V.Rao of a shipping agency, pointed out.

Godavari delta canals to be closed on April 31 : Collector

Kakinada, April 21 -- East Godavari Collector Neethu Kumary said all the canals in Eastern Delta would be closed on April 31 as such all the summer storage tanks and other drinking water tanks needed to be filled up by April 30.

Addressing the officials of rural water supply, AP Transco and municipal officials at the Collectorate today, she said every effort should be made that there should not be any drinking water shortage at any place.

Necessary water should be transported through tankers and adequate funds are available with the district administration to meet the contingencies.

The electricity authorities should issue connections to the water supply schemes to make them functional immediately in view of summer,' she added.

Consultant to study ship-breaking industry at Kakinada

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to appoint a technical consultant firm to evaluate the possible impact of setting up the proposed ship breaking industry at Kakinada coast in East Godavari district.

The National Ship Design and Research Centre (NSDRC) of Vizag is likely to be appointed to take up the study. According to sources, the consultant firm has to submit its report within a period of one month.

The decision comes in the wake of contradictory opinions expressed by the reports of three senior IAS officers, who were deputed to examine on whether the ship breaking industry should be allowed to be set up at Kakinada. The state government’s move was due to local protests against allowing the industry on Kakinada seacoast.

Some local organisations have been arguing that the industry will pose a serious threat to the environment that could result in the elimination of marine life in that area, rendering scores of fishermen jobless.

The protests were followed by the visit of this area by a business team from Gujarat of which requested the government to allow them to set up ship breaking units near Kakinada.

State officials estimate the potentiality of the ship breaking industry at Kakinada with an annual turnover close to Rs 200 crore if allowed.

It is said that owing to several factors the ship breaking firms of Gujarat are looking for an alternate location for their business and Kakinada is said to be ideally suited to the industry.

The state town and country planning joint director, Mr K. Purushottam Reddy, held a review meeting with the officials from municipal corporations and municipalities in Rajahmundry region limits here on Saturday.

Later, he told newsmen that they were in the process of coming out with new master plans for both the corporations and added that only 50 per cent the work was completed so far. He sounded confident to get them ready as per schedule once they get access to the satellite imageries.

Referring to the implementation of the Building Penalisation Scheme, the joint director said that they were collecting 20 per cent additional tax from the property owners as they failed to get their properties regularised and ruled out any possibility of further extension of the scheme.

He said that the civic bodies were getting good revenue through the implementation of Layout Regularisation Scheme.

With regard to unauthorised buildings, the joint director said that they would serve notices initially and if the owners failed to comply with, they would exercise the power to seize such buildings.

He said that as the state government issued a new GO recently, property owners can construct a building in the area ranging between 50 to 300 square metres and added that set backs were also reduced. He also said that the set backs could be followed in proportion to the total area of the site and the built-up area.

The JD said that efforts were on to recruit 226 building inspectors throu-gh Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission and added that in about three months, they would get the recruitment of the inspectors.

Probe into gas leak at edible oil unit in Kakinada

KAKINADA, MAY 8:
The ammonia gas leak incident in an edible oil refinery near the port here on Monday once again brought to the fore the lack of proper safety measures in these units, causing anxiety among the people in the residentital colonies in the town and in the nearby villages. Several workers were affected in the gas leak incident at Nikhil refineries, but fortunately there were no casualties. The workers are now recovering in hospital.

The district administration ordered an inquiry into the incident, but going by the past record it is doubtful whether any meaningful action will follow. According to Mr N. Promod Kumar Reddy, Executive Engineer of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, who visited the spot, ammonia gas escaped in Monday's incident. He said it was not necessary for edible oil units to make use of ammonia in the production process. There were less hazardous gases. He said he would make the recommendation in his report.

There are 13 edible oil refineries at Vakalapudi and the nearby areas in the vicinity of the port. They process crude palmolein imported from Malaysia and other countries through the port. There are also complaints that the units are not adopting proper pollution control measures and the public in the nearby areas frequently appeal to the authorities to take corrective measures, but in vain.

The District Collector of East Godavari, Ms Neethu Kumari Prasad, appointed a three-member committee headed by the inspector of factories to go into the gas leak incident on Monday and submit a report. She promised preventive steps.

Delay in Kakinada sugar refinery costs Rs 200 cr

The Murugappa Group has incurred around Rs 200-crore loss as it could not commence production from its Silk Road Refinery in Kakinada. The group has attributed the delay in commencing the sugar refinery to to non-availability of gas.

The Silk Road Refinery is a joint venture between Murugappa Group’s EID Parry and multinational company Cargill. The refinery is coming up at Kakinada with a capacity of 600,000 tonne, with scope to expand it to one million tonne.

A Vellayan, executive chairman, Murugappa Group, said that the project was getting delayed for about seven months now, since gas was not allocated to the plant as promised by the government. “Now, we are in the process of moving to a coal-fired model after having received statutory approvals,” he said.
On the financial impact due to the delay, Vellayan said the impact was around Rs 200 crore and that the company now had to invest another Rs 60-70 crore, which was over and above Rs 500 crore already invested in the refinery.

N Srinivasan, director (finance), Murugappa Group, said, “Earlier, we had planned to produce 35 mega watt of power at the refinery. Now, that revenue is also lost.” The company expected the refinery to bring in Rs 60-70 crore additional revenue by selling power.

According to Vellayan, once the coal-fired model is ready, the company will commence the commercial production, which would be in 2014-15.

EnerMech to open office in India

EnerMech, leading mechanical engineering specialist with a strong presence in the Middle East and Asian region, is to open its first office in India to boost its presence in the country’s fast expanding oil and gas sector.

The move in to India, which represents an multimillion dollar investment, ties in to an ambition expansion plan for the Asia Pacific region which will see new offices or bases being opened in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Busan, and Brisbane and Karratha in Western Australia, said a senior official.

Food testing lab at JNTU

The Jawaharlal Nehru Technology University, Kakinada (JNTU-K) is introducing new courses and setting up a food testing laboratory soon. It is also taking steps to strengthen infrastructure.

The Union ministry of food processing industries has approved a regional food testing laboratory at JNTU-K at a cost of Rs.3.21 crores, out of which Rs.1.59 crores will be the University’s share.

The JNTU-K vice-chancellor, Mr G. Tulsi Ram Das, who had been to Sweden recently, told reporters on Sunday that the main objective of the food testing laboratory was to provide an easily accessible and affordable laboratory to the regional food industry to get their products tested for quality parameters.

He said that the school of food technology will organise workshops on food industries to discuss the 'Present Status and Future Challenge'.

He said that it was proposed to conduct a workshop on the rice milling industry on July 27, to bring together personnel from industry, traders, producers, consumers and scientists to boost the profitability of the rice trade in Andhra Pradesh.

The University proposes to introduce MS in Sports Technology and Health Sciences for a maximum of five students in collaboration with HEIG Univer-sity, Vaud in Switzerland and University of Lausa-nne. He said that a provision was made for a maximum of five students to carry out their last semester project work with HEIG University.

It is proposed to conduct an international integrated industry driven research programme proposed with Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH). He also said that an M.Tech/M.Sc programme in Telecommunications System would be offered in place of Digital Signal Processing from this academic year 2012-13.

Mr Das said that a student exchange and faculty exchange programme with BTH would be executed from the current academic year.

He said that for international collaborated progammes, over 500 students appeared for an entrance test conducted at JNTU-K and JNTU-Hyderabad on Sunday.

Kakinada SEZ: Status quo to continue for some more time

Power position likely to ease by month-end: CM

KAKINADA, JULY 16:
The status quo will continue on the issue of Kakinada special economic zone (KSEZ) and the Government will take a decision only after consulting all and considering the pros and cons, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, said.

He told presspersons here on Monday, after the conclusion of his three-day tour of East Godavari district as a part of the Indiramma Bata programme, that he was aware that farmers were agitating against the economic zone, but a decision will be taken only after a detailed and careful review of the whole project. “As of now, it is status quo on KSEZ,” he said.

On the critical power situation in the State, the Chief Minister said the position may ease by the end of the month. The power cuts may be reduced by half as the State had received some rainfall during the month, he said. Even now, there was a shortage of 35 million units and therefore power-cuts had become inevitable.

MrReddy asserted the State Government was not responsible for the present power crisis, but the Union Government which was not allocating enough natural gas to the gas-based power projects in the State. As a result, they were not running to capacity and there was a lot of idle capacity and the State was suffering. On the issue of conducting elections to the local bodies and civic bodies, he said the State Government was ready to hold the elections, but there was a legal hassle. There was an unresolved issue with regard to reservations for BCs and the matter was pending with the Supreme Court. Once that was cleared, there would be no problem in holding polls.

He said the Indiramma Bata programme was taken up to acquaint himself with the problems at the grass-root level and to interact with the public in villages. The response to the programme, first launched in East Godavari, was very encouraging and he would cover other districts too. “We will give top priority to health and education,” the Chief Minister said.
