Cleveland Metroparks

Originally called the "Emerald Necklace", a string of greenspace surrounding the City of Cleveland Ohio was created by the Olmstead firm in the early 1920s. The network of parks spans over 21,000 acres and includes hundreds of miles of walking, bicycle, and horse trails as well as numerous picnic areas, nature education centers, golf courses, and countless fishing spots. In addition, the district includes the zoo in Cleveland. Several of the reservations are adjacent to Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Absolutely wonderful! I've seen pics of Adelaide but had never seen the green buffer zone between the city center and the rest of the city/metro. It wouldn't be a bad idea in other cities to think of something like this. Even having green zones like this every few miles/kms. Thumbs up Adelaide!

My hometown Middelburg is an old fortified town. The fortifications from 1595-1598 were dismanled around 1848. It was converted into a park in English landscape style according to a design of landscapearchitect Zocher. The trnch and bastions are still clearly visible. A part is gone because of a canal that was dug in such a way that it was connected to the inner harbour.

Off course, the city has always been surrounded by green farmlands. After the conversion it just was also surrounded by a park. And now the city has grown during the last century, it has an internal parkring.
