Masdar City, home to the largest photovoltaic power plant in the MENA region, announced on Wednesday that the plant had hit all its performance targets in the first two years of its operations, demonstrating the viability of the project in the region.

Since it began operations the plant has saved an estimated 24,000 tonnes in CO2 emissions, the equivalent of taking approximately 3,300 cars off Abu Dhabi’s roads, the company said in a statement.

The 10MW plant has generated approximately 36,000MWh of clean energy since its 2009 start, Frank Wouters, director of Masdar Power, said in a statement. The plant is one of only five projects in the UAE to register for carbon credits under the United Nation’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

This is all really amazing stuff!

If only there was greater political impetus towards this kind of development in other parts of the world, especially where I live in Australia.

We could do this too - we have the money, technology and the same environmental sensitivities and carbon footprint as the UAE, but we're still back in the fossil fuel age while all the future investment and technology in clean tech will go to Abu Dhabi.

Even more telling, while in Australia we have the pig polluters arguing that carbon pricing and environmental and social responsibility will cost jobs, Abu Dhabi (which is even more reliant on carbon-emtting natural resources for the majority of its GDP), is powering ahead. I can really respect that - it shows vision and leadership, and it will pay dividends.

Places like Masdar in 2011 are an equivalent to Silicon Valley in 1975, except perhaps even more important. It's really impressive.

Masdar City, the Abu Dhabi Government's carbon-neutral development, gained a tenant from Seoul yesterday in a sign of the deepening relationship between the capital and South Korea.

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), created by the South Korean government, opened an office in Abu Dhabi and plans to move into a space in Masdar City once it has been built. The institute has partnered with 10 countries, including the UAE this year, to drive environmentally sustainable economic growth.

"In green growth as well as renewable energy, the UAE is at the forefront," said Han Seung-soo, the institute's chairman, a former South Korean prime minister. "There's a lot of room for us to cooperate in this particular area."

The institute is the latest element in a strategic partnership between the two nations, one with scant natural energy resources and the other rich in fossil fuels. In its relationship with the UAE, South Korea brings healthcare expertise and counter-piracy military training.

But the most prominent aspect of the relationship is a plan for the South Korean utility Kepco to build four nuclear reactors, worth US$20 billion (Dh73.45bn), in Abu Dhabi. In March, the emirate awarded Seoul a stake to develop one or more oilfields with at least 1 billion barrels of reserves, which is expected to boost South Korea's self-sufficiency in oil and gas from 10.5 to 15 per cent.

"We'd like to have a more close relationship in the area of energy, including exploitation of oilfields and gasfields," Mr Han said yesterday.

The new tenant is welcome news for Masdar City, the 6-square-km development planned by Masdar, which has signed up major corporations such as General Electric and Siemens as anchor tenants but faced an uphill struggle amid the economic crisis and rising office vacancy rates in Abu Dhabi.

A GGGI official said the institute had been given favourable terms on rent and that much of the UAE's contribution would go to its own green-energy programme. "Most of the money from the UAE Government will be spent for the sake of the UAE," said the official.

Last year, Kwon Tae-kyun, South Korea's ambassador to the UAE, said the Emirates must offer incentives for South Korean companies to set up here.

"You have to think in the minds of potential investors. You have to induce. You cannot just ask them to come," Mr Kwon said last July. "If the UAE Government puts some money in, we can also put money there."

Masdar shelved plans for the world’s first building that makes more energy than it consumes, a year after the financial crisis forced the Abu Dhabi company to step back from setting up the first carbon-neutral city.

The Abu Dhabi state-owned company said it’s evaluating a different design for its headquarters than the one selected in 2008 from Chicago-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture for a 100,000 square-meter (1.1 million square-foot) structure equipped with enough solar panels to cover four soccer fields.

This area should be renamed Masdar business park as it's not and never will be a city. Too many things are called City in Abu Dhabi when they are just suburbs of the city of Abu Dhabi

Scotland’s First Minister is expected to ink a deal with Abu Dhabi’s green city Masdar next week to boost research into renewable energy, it was reported on Sunday.

The partnership, due to be signed by Alex Salmond at the World Energy Future Summit, will see Masdar academics partner with Scottish universities to study new technologies to power wind, solar, wave and tidal machines, the Scotsman said.

Masdar City and TVP Solar have completed the installation of a field of high vacuum flat solar thermal panels for the solar cooling plant at the carbon neutral city.

Speaking on the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, Alan Frost, director of Masdar City, said that the TVP Solar MT-Power panels were expected to provide over 70% solar-to-cooling conversion efficiency, operating at 180˚C to drive a double-effect absorption chiller.

Siemens’ Middle East Headquarters at Masdar City, designed by Sheppard Robson, has won the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Office Award.

Currently under construction, with completion due at the end of 2012, the building is pitching for LEED Platinum status.
