I had a great time in Liverpool. Went to the Lion pub on chapel st a couple of times, the old hole in the wall and also ye Cracke and Philharmonic rooms. Also went to the Tate, museum of Liverpool and the Cains Brewery pub the Grapes (the brewery was great and i'm surprised the council don't make more of an attraction of it in a similar way to Guiness in Dublin.

Also visited both cathedrals but didn't go up the tower of the Anglican one which actually has a lift!! its a massive place.

Interestingly the tourist literature specified the only places in England which had a Protestant and Catholic cathedral were Liverpool and Norwich - Birmingham has both too - St Chads Catholic Cathedral and St Philips Anglican Cathedral.

Really loved the Georgian hope street area. Lots of little independent shops and bars.

Had a great time met lots of nice people, it reminds me a lot of Birmingham Liverpool, down to earth and friendly and up for a good night out.

Thanks for all the suggestions, looking forward to our next visit.

Glad you enjoyed it. Went to Brum in December and had a great time. Loved the Chrimbo market, and Birmingham has a lot of really good real ales pubs too.

I have been thinking of how Liverpool can combat stereotypes about the city, as we all know, the same old views about crime, poverty, and unemployment pervade the media and the assumptions of outsiders. Sometimes we are told that we take ourselves too seriously and that the portrayal of Liverpool people is just a bit of a giggle, but lets face it, it costs jobs and investment in the city. Some of the stories I have heard about how the Metropolitan police treated some Liverpool fans at Wembley on Sunday would cause uproar in the Guardian if it were to be Blacks who were treated that way. If we complain we have a chip on our shoulder, its catch 22.

This sounds trivial but I was watching Mile High last night which is an airline drama from 2004. The flight from London to Liverpool showed a flight brawl between LFC and EFC fans who were just acting like barbarians. The other people who were watching it with me actually said, "Thats the view that people have of Liverpool people".

National TV campaign opens door to Liverpool’s tourism businesses

by Neil Hodgson, The Liverpool PostMar 1 2012Add a commentRecommend inShare.3 1LIVERPOOL will star in a £4m TV ad campaign that will offer access to a global market for its tourism businesses.

National tourism body VisitEngland’s GREAT 2012 campaign starts on March 8, and Liverpool is the only city region featured in its two 40-second, and 60-second, adverts to be screened on terrestrial and satellite channels until May 14.

Regional tourism body VisitLiverpool has commissioned its own 10-second showcase advert which will run on from the main ad throughout April, and will also be broadcast independently at various key times.

The adverts feature veteran TV and film actress Julie Walters who will champion the region.

Her career took off as a member of the Liverpool Everyman Theatre cast in the 1970s, and she has starred in many Liverpool productions, including playwright Alan Bleasdale’s milestone TV work Boys From The Black Stuff which encapsulated the grim economic reality facing the region in the 1980s.

Inward investment and tourism agency, The Mersey Partnership (TMP), says the campaign is a fantastic opportunity for national and international exposure to promote the region, and is urging tourism-related businesses throughout the region to get involved.

In addition to the TV advert, there will be online and social media activity to support the campaign and viewers will be directed to a special VisitEngland GREAT 2012 microsite with more detailed information.

Viewers will be able to go online to find special offers at the destination of their choice via aninteractive map and TMP is calling on the region’s tourism-related businesses to upload details of their special deals on accommodation, attractions and restaurants, all free of charge.

All offers and deals posted to the site will be live from March 8, through to December 31, 2012 – but they must be uploaded by Friday, March 10.

Duncan Frazer, TMP’s commercial and marketing director, said: “We are delighted that Liverpool is to feature in the GREAT 2012 television campaign.

“It’s going to generate huge interest in the destination.”

He added: “This is a unique opportunity for tourism businesses to get involved in a multi-million television campaign and we are delighted that we can offer this free of charge.

“I would encourage everyone involved in the city region’s visitor economy to support the campaign and help attract new and returning visitors by offering the best experience possible.”

Although the tourism authorities hope to build up more visits, including by overseas tourists, to England and its key cities and rural attractions, one of the other key aims of the VisitENGLAND campaign is to encourage more domestic consumers to shun their foreign short breaks and main holidays and stay and holiday in the UK this summer during what is planned to be a landmark year of events, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics.

Any city region tourism businesses wishing to take advantage of the campaign are encouraged to upload their special offers, free of charge, by visiting www. great2012offers.com/upload/

To be honest I thought Desperate Scousewives was free advertising for Liverpool because of all of the great shots of the city. Kind of glad it didn't get a second series though as it could have got more tacky with regards to stereo types because of the people they were using.

The scaffolding is down off the Fruit Exchange, and whilst not great, looks like a decent clean up job.

Growth of Liverpool city region economy is set to accelerate
By Neil HodgsonMar 5 2012Comment (1)Recommend (1) inShare.4 6EMPLOYMENT growth across Merseyside is expected to outstrip North West and UK levels over the next 13 years to 2025.
The latest economic review by inward investment agency The Mersey Partnership (TMP) says the improvement will come from the region’s four key flagship sectors for the future – tourism, the low carbon economy, the knowledge economy, and the superport.
But it also identifies the Bric countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China – as key areas of opportunity for Merseyside businesses in the short term, compared with the eurozone trading bloc which is expected to struggle economically for the next few years.
TMP’s 2012 Economic Review will be unveiled at the Albert Dock’s Maritime Museum tomorrow.
It will detail progress by Liverpool City Region – Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton – and present growth and employment forecasts up to 2025.
And the report claims that steps taken in recent years to provide a platform for growth in the four key sectors have helped shield the region from some of the worst effects of the recent recession.
In the 12 months to March 2011 private sector employment grew by 2.2%, better than UK rates, and the report says: “This result may be an early indicator of successful change driven by the four key growth sectors.”
The report shows that 72% of working age adults in the region were “economically active”, which is lower than the UK as a whole and lags behind other city regions.
But long term employment forecasts from 2010 to 2025 give more cause for optimism.
In each five year period from 2010 to 2025 employment across the region is predicted to grow by 0.7%, 1.2% and 1%, respectively.
That compares with forecasts of 0.1%, 0.6% and 0.6% for the North West in the same periods, and 0.2%, 0.7% and 0.7% across the UK.
Another measure of the region’s progress showed mixed fortunes.
Gross value added (GVA) shows the economic value of a region. The Liverpool City Region was estimated at £21.9bn in 2009, compared with £19.9bn for South Yorkshire and £23bn for Tyne & Wear.
But it showed better resilience during the downturn, dropping by 1.7% between 2008 and 2009, compared with 2.7% across the UK.
However, while the region’s GVA is predicted to grow by around 1.5% each year up to 2015, that compares with around 2% for the North West and UK.
Rod Holmes, TMP chair, welcomed the progress made in each of the four key sectors, and said that the creation by the coalition Government of Enterprise Zones will help further delivery of ambitious schemes.
And while he acknowledges that the region faces “huge economic challenges” and has lost some momentum during the past year, he added: “We now know what needs doing and are having some positive results.”

Just go to main page and click on "New Thread" on the left hand side. It's pretty straightforward. Don't think any special permissions or settings are needed.

Mother’s Day in Liverpool Gay Quarter
by Felicity Crease, Liverpool EchoMar 15 2012

MOTHER’S Day will be celebrated in an extra special way in Liverpool’s gay quarter on Sunday.

Businesses will be making an extra effort to make mums feel extra welcome.

The day will be celebrated in the Stanley Street Quarter with local bars, cafes, restaurants and community organisations working together.

From fresh flowers to handmade chocolates, numerous stalls will be selling a selection of gifts on pedestrianised Stanley Street, ensuring that mums get a treat.

Cllr Nick Small said: “The businesses in the area are making a really special effort to make Mother’s Day a day to remember for all the mums who will be being spoilt on Sunday.

“We want to bring more animation to the Quarter and we have got some great events lined up for 2012.”

I've noticed recently that there's a trend in Maghull of rebranding everything after Frank Hornby; i.e. the Frank Hornby Wetherspoons (formerly the Everest), Frank Hornby Square (formerly Maghull Central Square). I know that he's Maghull's most famous resident, but surely not everything has to be named after him.

Noticeable how much North West Tonight are bumming the fact that the Queen is visiting "the region" (manchester). Worlds apart from the level of coverage they gave her recent visit here.

Both BBC and ITV did this. "The Queen visited the North West today", well yes she did, but this implies that she visited the entire region rather than just Manchester.

On another note, the weather has been lovely this weekend in Liverpool.

I've just noticed that I can see the Anglican Cathedral and Radio City Tower from my loft window. (I live in Maghull BTW).
