Allow me to kick off the thread with this,

Similar to Mostafa Ibrahim's story. There are hundreds like this.
Our government is made up of people who try their best to make Egyptian innovators work for Israel. They are no less than traitors.

CAIRO: Egyptian high school student Amr Mohamed, 18, was named one of six regional competitors in the final stage of YouTube Science Lab competition challenging young scientists to design scientific experiments in space.

YouTube, Lenovo and Space Adventures, in cooperation with space agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), launched the global competition to encourage youngsters from two age groups to design experiments that can be carried out in space.

Mohamed, an Alexandrian who is studying to complete the British IGCSE certificate, is one of three regional finalists in the 16-18 age bracket. His entry was a proposal to examine the behavior of the Zebra jumping spider (Salticus scenicus) in a microgravity environment.

In his age group, Mohamed is the only competitor from the Middle East, Africa, and Europe who reached the final stage.

"Jumping spiders don’t catch their prey using webs like other spiders, but they locate their prey and then jump to capture them," Mohamed told Daily News Egypt Thursday.

"My theory is that jumping spiders won’t be able to catch their preys in space because they cannot jump in a zero-gravity environment," he said.

A panel of six judges will choose two regional winners out of the six finalists in an awards ceremony on March 22, one winner from each age group.

Later this year the experiments proposed by the two winners will be conducted 250 miles above earth, aboard the International Space Station (ISS), which will be live-streamed on YouTube as part of a global event celebrating science and space.

YouTube Science Lab competition received 2,000 submissions from 80 countries across the world, which were screened down to a shortlist of 60 experiments. The final shortlist was reached following a global voting drive and the decision of a panel of judges, narrowing it down to only six finalists.

The experiment has to include a question, hypothesis, method, results and a presentation of all the above. Only 25 percent of the evaluation of the experiment is based on voting.

The remaining 75 percent is determined by the judging panel and include 25 percent for creativity, 25 for scientific knowledge and the same to presentation method.

Mohamed aspires to join one of the US’s prestigious universities and has already applied to MIT, Stanford and Columbia.

"I hope I can join one of these universities because there are no real scientific research programs in Egypt," he said.

"There is a research program in MIT that enables undergraduates to choose a certain area of study and involve them in undergraduate research while being a research assistant, and it is fully funded," he explained.

Mohamed also believes that the experience of studying abroad will help him become more independent.

He said that if he is not accepted overseas, he will apply for a science program in a public university, but stipulates that it should have "a human face" like health care.

“I cannot imagine living with machines for the rest of my life,” he said.

But although Mohamed doesn’t like machines, he won two silver medals in programming in the Egyptian Olympiad for Informatics.

The aspiring scientist was also involved in politics, joining nationwide protests on Jan. 28, 2011 which witnessed deadly clashes between peaceful protesters and police.

"I was watching the protests in the balcony in Jan. 28 when one of the protesters provoked me and said ‘Rise Egyptian! Why you are silent? Did you get your rights?’. I joined the protest right away, because my rights were not respected," he recalled.

More recently, he joined protests in front of the Northern Military District in Alexandria following the Feb. 1 Port Said football massacre.

Mohamed is eldest of two sisters and one brother, and said he enjoys the control and influence the eldest brother has, but is aware that it is a huge responsibility.

“I'm the oldest and I have to set the example for the rest.”

Spending time on Play Station isn’t always the best influence, he said, smiling.

Egypt's youth is brilliant, if only they could grow up in an environment that supported their geniality. Egypt would definitely be a big-shot in science and technology if our education system was better.

Scientific breakthrough: mass coral spawning occurs in the Red Sea

Fri, 11/05/2012 - 21:03

A group of Egyptian scientists have witnessed and filmed the first account of mass coral spawning in the Red Sea. The event last weekend is considered a scientific breakthrough, as mass coral spawning was previously believed to only occur in tropical locations.

Mass spawning is an event of synchronized reproduction, where coral colonies release their gametes – eggs and sperm – simultaneously in large quantities over a short period of time, in order to maximize chances of fertilization.

The mass release is connected to the moon’s cycles, as it occurs around midnight, once a year, two or three days before or after a full moon. It is believed a combination of the moonlight and gravitational pull stimulates the event.

This event involved the Acropora species, a group of common hard corals. It occurred overnight between the 3 and 4 May, before the full moon on 6 May.

Mahmoud Hanafy, a marine biologist for the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA), who was part of the team that filmed the event, said that he has been trying to prove the occurrence of mass spawning in the Red Sea for nine years, despite disbelief from scientists around the world.

“Once a year, overnight, we’d find all the corals in spent [post gamete release] condition, but could never pinpoint the exact moment beforehand,” he said. “This time, we set up a film crew, and went diving every night from 10pm – 2am and we caught it, and have now sent the video it to scientific journals around the world.”

The release caused the sea to become clouded by an unidentified reddish substance, and apparently startled unknowing observers the next morning.

The occurrence of mass coral spawning in the Red Sea has magnificent implications with regards to the restoration and rehabilitation of the sea’s deteriorating coral reefs, as now once a year, scientists can collect large quantities of gametes and use them to breed restorative coral in labs.

It is also expected to encourage dive tourism, as the witnessing of mass coral spawning is, in HEPCA managing director Amr Ali’s words, “a diver’s Disneyland.”

Egyptian wins US$100,000 African Innovation Prize
[CAIRO] An Egyptian engineer who has designed a base-station antenna that can facilitate upgrades to more advanced mobile networks in developing countries has become the first winner of the Innovation Prize for Africa, which was created last year.

The antenna makes it easier for telecommunication service providers to upgrade their networks without needing to change base stations.

The winner of the US$100,000 prize, Mohammed Sanad, a professor at the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University, Egypt, said his antenna "suits developing countries, which don't have a telecommunication infrastructure".

"Conventional cellular base stations cannot be assembled and disassembled on site. They are heavy and need complicated mounting towers," Sanad told SciDev.Net. He said the new antenna suits all generations of wireless applications without any need to change or upgrade. *

Sanad said he has received many offers to roll out the new antenna in Africa, in the wake of the prize ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (26 March).

The runner up, Zeinou Abdelyamine, an industrial chemist from Algeria, received US$50,000 for his research and development of environmentally friendly, natural insecticides and rodenticides.

His products contain natural elements which attract insects and rodents, but are fatal when consumed.

"Our work proves that Africa can develop new technology and can solve her problems by herself," Zeinou told D'Jazair News.

The Prize, which aims to stimulate innovative solutions with strong commercialisation potential, was established bythe UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Innovation Foundation in 2011.

The inaugural winners were selected from 458 submissions from 38 countries, with most applications coming from Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

Other shortlisted projects included the iCow application to aid small-scale farmers, and solar powered lanterns aimed at poor rural communities.

AUC, Zewail City launch Egypt's 1st centre devoted to nano-tech
The American University in Cairo (AUC) in cooperation with the Zewail Science and Technology City has established a new Centre for Nano-Electronics and Devices, which will bring together internationally renowned scientists from both institutions, according to an AUC press release issued Sunday.

The centre's work will focus primarily on the design and engineering of consumer electronic devices and tiny sensors, built at the nano-scale of one billionth of a meter. The new technology can be applied to several vital fields, including the medical, food production, water purification and renewable energy sectors.

The centre also aims to establish strong links between academia and industry in a variety of fields pertaining to nano-technology.

Highlighting the importance of the new partnership, AUC Provost Medhat Haroun noted: "We are especially pleased that our first collaboration with Zewail City is in the area of nano-electronics."

The partnership represents a first step towards long-term cooperation between the two academic institutions. In addition to the exchange of researchers, the partnership also includes fellowships for promising students.

The new centre plans to capitalise on the state-of-the-art scientific facilities and resources available at both AUC and Zewail City, particularly in the area of biotechnology and biomedical diagnostics.
