Most of the good Chinese restaurants are in Vancouver and Richmond.

I like chinese beer better because it tastes less bitter than the western beers.

If you're into HK/Cantonese or Shanghai street food - YES, I agree with you.

but I disagree with you in terms of diversity of Chinese food, that Richmond IS NOT!

i actually dont know burnaby very well, other than I've gone to some pretty impressive places there - that were Taiwanese or Shanghainese (dont remember the names). I don't really spend much time in Burnaby because I am drawn to the big city and therefore spend MOST of my time in Vancouver.

Vancouver has a number of places that aren't Guangdong, of particular note is Chongqing Sichuan restaurant in Commercial Drive and the Mandarin food at Kirin and Imperial in downtown.

I used to live in chongqing, so I probably desire a more rounded variety of Chinese cuisine than JUST hong-kong cafe and street food. Although I do love HK food, I think that is what Richmond excels in but I can't say it does other varieties as well (if at all).

Kirin also has Cantonese restaurants in Vancouver and Richmond.
Richmond is not only about Hong Kong style cafe and Taiwan style beef noodles. There are Cantonese style wonton noodles shops, and Yunnan rice noodle shops.
There are a couple of very good Shanghai restaurants in Richmond. The best is probably Shanghai River. For Sichuan food, Golden Spring is very good.

I just did a search and you can take a look at the 2012 Chinese restaurants awards for Vancouver, many of them are in Richmond.

nah, Im not a girl and I live in Seattle. sorry. lol

but I LOVE Vancouver and have been making it up for the last 15+ years.

Im not saying that Richmond doesn't have other restaurants, Im just saying Richmond's specialty is HK, SH, and Cantonese 'seafood' restaurant food. I wouldn't go to Richmond for Sichuan food.

Hi Chinese Gourmand, I bought some days ago chinese soya sauce and black Sesame oil (in a chinese market in my city).

I found that soya sauce is very good on fish dishes, and also in chicken.

I love a lot the taste of sesame oil (it's a 100% pure black sesame oil) but honestly it has a very strong taste, I don't know which dish it could season at the best.

Do you have some suggestions?

I have never tried the black sesame oil, but I know the brown sesame oil is more popular in chinese cooking. Though, you can't use it as the cooking oil since the flavor is too intense and it burns quite easily. Put a few drops of sesame oil in the salad, some meat dishes and noodles soup would enhance the taste and smell but too much of it would make the foods taste bitter.

Yes, you're right Yellow, I just put some drops in salad, with also olive oil.

I red somewhere that this black sesame oil would be very healthy

About soya sauce, we ate this evening mussels (cooked in the pan), wich taste improves with the soya sauce

This evening we ate italian mussels, with chinese sauce, and a bottle of white Chardonney from Chile, cheap but very good

PS if you have some pictures about chineese wine region and wineries, please post in my thread (see signature), I know there are many
