Sounds very true. It's aesthetics is a secondary thing here. It's simply Maracana - how many other stadiums had crowds of almost 200,000 people?

Wembley stadium was better designed then maracana, though it was built previously.

I think that the current project is great, but I do not accept the sum that will be spent with it. Ungladly It's done, so I just have to say that apparently the project is good. Better then before it will be, I am sure, because Maracanã is a trouble since it was built.

Well I'v never been to the Macarana but I can say from personal expereince that Wembley was most certainly not well designed. Besides the towers(which were ultimately quite crude concret constructions) it looked like a prison block from the outside and was incredabley cramped on the inside with large gaps between the stands and the pitch behind the goals.

The clearest difference is simpley size, while Wembley did once host a crowd of around 200,000 it was insanely overcrowded with fans literally standing at the edges of the field of play. A moderniszed Wembley within the same footprint would likely have had a capacity below 60K.

You cannot analyze it just objectively. You have to know that a stadium, or every building, its not just what it can give you functionally, but how it can improve the entertainment subjectivelly, e.g. how it can pay your attention from the television and how... Maracana was just a functionally building, whithout art, without inspiration, without identity.

And that was why Wembley was really better designed than maracana, because it was original and artfully built.

A modernised Maracana with the same footprint will have a capacity of 82000....it doesn't mean a great deal.

There is no doubt that the old Wembley wasn't meant to hold 200,000 whereas the Maracana was though. The estimate of 200,000+ is still a bit dubious in any case. Journalists are often prone to hopelessly exaggerating crowd estimates.

The biggest ground in Europe was Hampden, not Wembley. Its capacity at one stage was over 180,000. For some reason the Scottish FA limited games to 150000 though, and its highest crowd was around 500 under that limit, but again, thousands more ticketless fans were said to have gained entry.

Well, still Maracana have hosted the biggest attendance for a World Cup match ever. Officially 198,000 souls witnessed Brazil loses the final against Uruguay.

Wembley is special. Maracana is special too. End of the stupid comparision between both.
