Builders Begin Work on Mesa del Sol’s First Homes

Developers of the Mesa del Sol commercial and residential development on Albuquerque’s south side have broken ground on the project’s first model homes.

Wednesday’s groundbreaking has been years in the making.

Mesa del Sol had initially hoped to break ground on homes in 2009 and have residents living in 100 homes there by early 2010. The economic downturn and the soft housing market resulted in a delay.

The first homes will be available for sale in the spring.

The builders include Paul Allen Green Built Homes, Pulte Homes, Rachel Matthew Homes and RayLee Homes.

Mesa del Sol’s vice president of development, Chris Anderson, calls it a very exciting time for the community.

Ultimately, Mesa del Sol will have more than 37,000 homes when it’s fully built over the next 30 to 40 years.
It begins.

Thanks very much for posting the UNM-Sandoval medical center image. Impressive looking. I didn't realize that UNM was building a medical center there.

I need to get by the new downtown Rio Rancho and take a look.

Just a few updates on the development out our fair city! BTW I noticed while living abroad over here in the UK and before in Germany, this thread has really slowed down over the years. Anyone have thoughts on creating a group on FB to help mass numbers and interest and simplify the means of communication? Just an idea!

Looks like Winrock Town Center is heating up: Dave and Busters, BJ's Brewpub and Ghenghis Grill have all signed up to open restaurants at WTC. The Imax Theater appears to be nearing a groundbreaking while the venerable old Winrock Inn gets the bulldozer's 'velvet touch'...

Tough to lose them but the gas revenues that indirectly backed New Mexico's film incentives are dropping due to terrible market prices.

ABQ Launches Convention Center Improvements

Albuquerque Convention Center Plans by abqist, on Flickr

Mayor Richard Berry’s administration is moving forward with a $20 million renovation of the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Berry said Wednesday that he expects the work to focus on the older, western wing of the center. He mentioned the Albuquerque International Sunport, which has drawn praise for its distinctive architecture, as an example of what he’d like to see. “We’re going to make it look more like Albuquerque … not just Anytown, USA,” Berry said.

Dekker/Perich/Sabatini has a $1.3 million contract to design the improvements. Construction could start within a year. It will be done in phase so the Convention Center can stay open. The work is part of Berry’s “ABQ: The Plan” initiative for long-range improvements.
