Government campaign sows seed of green revolution

You can not miss the signboards propped up on medians at prominent localities in the city, flashing messages of planting trees, and urging residents to avoid using plastics. With going green being the new watchword, efforts in creating awareness of increasing green cover have paid off. Sticking to the method of leading by example, the State government's recent announcement of a mass sapling plantation campaign has earned appreciation from many, irrespective of political barriers.

The campaign was launched in all the districts on February 24, birthday of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The State Forest Department in association with the Tamil Nadu State Pollution Control Board will embark on the task of planting 64 lakh seedlings of various fast growing species outside the forest area in the state.

Students, consumer organisations, environmentalists, and voluntary organisations, have voiced a positive opinion on the move.

The area of focus will be campuses of educational institutions, industrial units prone to pollution, government offices, besides national and state highways. The Forest Department will supply and plant tree seedlings in institutions and offices for free of cost. The unique distinction of this project is that even private concerns have been taken into account for the drive. While in the past, mass sapling planting campaigns have failed to reap desired results due to lack of proper upkeep, this time the government is keen on identifying the right places to ensure that plants are maintained. For instance, institutions with compound walls are chosen for planting saplings to ensure proper upkeep. A hawk's eye will be kept on all the saplings to ensure regular watering and maintenance.

With the Chief Minister evincing interest in the initiative, the Tiruchi district administration and the Forest Department lost no time in organising preliminary works for the planting of 1.6 lakh seedlings in the district. Teams were formed to identify areas for the campaign, and for creating awareness among the public. The Pollution Control Board presented a list of industries prone to pollution, and the Forest teams visited the units and ascertained soil fertility of the places.

As soon as the project was announced a few months ago, the Forest Department swung into action, and raised seedlings at its nursery farms at Somarasampettai, Manapparai, Thuvarankurichi, and Thuraiyur.

Seedlings of tree species, including neem, pungan, kumil, aavi, gulmohar and naval were raised in these nurseries. Specific species of avenue trees were chosen as these floras are known for their fast growth and serene appearance.

Plant varieties that provide shade and enhance the face of the environment are being chosen, according to I.Anwardeen, District Forest Officer. Collector Jayashree Muralidharan took advantage of the opportunity to raise as many trees as possible in all the government offices across the district, and specific orders were given to officers of all the departments. Industrial houses situated in the district have come forward to provide tree guards.

The Cethar Ltd, Ramco Cement, Tiruchi Distilleries and Chemicals Limited, have already donated hundreds of tree guards and a few other corporate houses are in the row to provide assistance.

Even before this well designed project was launched, over 22,000 seedlings were planted at the Collectorate and other government offices under the ‘Tiruchi Green' campaign, thanks to the initiative of Ms. Jayashree Muralidharan.

The authorities are going all out to encourage people to participate in this campaign. The seedlings will be given free of cost to voluntary organisations and residents welfare associations too which agree for the proper maintenance of the trees, a forest officer said.

V. Sundararaju, former Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, based on his experience, says that more than planting, nursing a tree is important. The scheme should also ensure identification of individuals and fixing responsibility for the proper upkeep and growth of trees.

The authorities should take all initiative to motivate the people for the success of this project. The nearby individual or institution should be involved for the maintenance of the trees planted in public places. If possible , individuals and institutions should be honoured in recognition of their efforts , says Mr. Sundararaju.

Similarly, educational institutions should give responsibility of maintaining plants to the students , he adds.

A concerted effort is the need of the hour for achieving the desired goals to check the hazards such as global warming . On the lines of Arivoli Iyakkam, pulse polio , tree planting should also become a mass movement, says V. R. Mathiazhagan, Professor of Economics, National College.

Not happy with civic services? Corporation is just a call away

City residents could now register complaints with respect to civic services over the telephone as the Tiruchi Corporation on Monday launched an interactive voice response system (IVRS) for redressing grievances effectively.

The Corporation also unveiled a touch screen kiosk at the corporation main office, to provide information to public on tax assessments, dues and payments, and details about birth and death registrations. Similar touch screens would be functional at all the four zonal offices of K.Abishekapuram, Ariyamangalam, Golden Rock and Srirangam over the next few days. The IVRS would be accessed by dialling 4002400 and callers would be guided in English or Tamil, as the choice may be, through an automated response system for registering their complaints with respect to street lights, drinking water supply, road repairs and sanitation.

On registration of a complaint, an identity number would be generated and sent by SMS to the complainant and the officers (assistant executive engineers or junior engineers) concerned of the particular locality. Using the number the officers could access the complaint for initiating follow up action. Complainants could also get to know the status of the complaints by accessing the service and keying in the complaint number.

“The system is intended to strengthen the grievance redressal mechanism and complaints which are pending for more than three days would be reviewed directly by the Commissioner,” Corporation Commissioner K.Veera Raghava Rao told The Hindu .

City residents could also get information about tax dues and payments through the IVRS also. The touch screen kiosks, which could also be operated in English or Tamil. The IVRS system and the kiosk at the Corporation Main Office were inaugurated by Mayor A.Jaya in the presence of Mr.Rao, Asick Meera, Deputy Mayor, councillors and officials.

Duo create national records in cube contest

A 11th standard student of Trichy's Montfort School and a second year engineering student of NIT-K Suratkal earned laurels by created five of the six national records (four in the average and two in single solving) in the cube solving open competition on the concluding day of the 8th edition of the National Institute of Technology, Trichy's Pragyan-2012 a techno-management event.

The mind-boggling game of cube which calls for a sharp analytical mind coupled with the dexterity of fingers was played out in eight disciplines: 2X2, 3X3, 3X3 OH (one hand) 3X3 blindfolded, 4X4, 5X5, Pyraminx (pyramid-shaped cube having only four sides and six edges) and Square-1.

Fifteen-year-old Bernett Orlando of Montfort School solved the 3X3 cube scramble in a record 12.04 seconds. Interestingly, Bernett had created a national record in the same discipline first at IIT-Chennai last year by solving the cube in 13.48 seconds. But the record was broken by Prashant, a student of Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, Mumbai on February 4 this year, as he solved the cube in 12.54 seconds. Bernett created another national record by solving the 3X3 cube single solving in 10.27 seconds as against the existing record of 10.84 seconds.

In the 2X2 cube solving competition, Manasij Venkatesh from NIT-K Suratkal clocked it in a record 4.17 seconds beating the current national record that was achieved in 4.18 seconds. Manasij also bagged the 3X3 cube blindfolded competition by solving it in one minute 49 seconds, a new national record. Manasij told TOI that he had improved a lot since he had solved the same game in one minute 54 seconds last October at an event in his own college.

It was a heartbreaking scene to witness T S K Rakshitha, a third-standard student of Montfort School, Trichy who holds the record for being youngest in the world to solve the 3X3 cube blindfolded, sadly lose out to Manasij. Rakshitha could not solve it in time and started crying in the first round itself, much to the puzzlement of her parents who were present. In the best of five events, the best and worst results of an individual are left out, and an average of the remaining three is taken into account to declare the winner.

The Pyraminx cube solving was bagged by Swaminathan Chandrasekharan, a second year student of MIT-Chrompet who won the game for the first time. Swaminathan told TOI that he learnt the intricacies of the game from his mentor Bhargav Narasimhan of Vels University, Pallavaram who himself created a national record by clocking the 3X3 OH (one hand) competition by an average of 23.06 seconds. Meanwhile, Manasij had created another national record in the single solving event of the same 3X3 OH by clocking a single in 17.71 seconds.

Bernett Orlando who had been the world champion from 2007 to 2010 did not participate in the 2011 event as he concentrated on his 10th board exams. He also won the 4X4 and 5X5, and Square-1 disciplines and became the all round star of the event having won five games and creating two national records.

Bernett's father John Louis, the only Indian delegate for the World Cube Association told TOI that winning a cube competition gave the students a sense of confidence, gave them a creative bend of mind and weaned them away from the soaps of the idiot box.

Trenchless technology to be used in laying underground sewer lines

The Tiruchi Corporation has decided to go in for trenchless technology to lay the underground sewerage scheme (UGSS) lines around Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple and other narrow lanes in the Srirangam town. The State government has already accorded administrative sanction for the extension of the UGSS for the areas omitted in Srirangam, at a cost of Rs.24 crore, under phase I of expansion of the sewer system in the city.

Under this phase, residential colonies spread over a radius of 10.53 square km in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikovil areas would be brought under the sewer network. The project would benefit a population of 31,145 in the base year of 2014, 41,924 in the intermediate stage in 2029, and 56,405 in the ultimate stage by 2044. About 5.66 million litres a day of sewage are expected to be generated in these areas by 2029 and 7.61 MLD by 2044.

The project was to address one of the major shortcomings of the existing underground sewer system in Srirangam by covering the Uthira and Chithra Veedhis around the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. These streets have not been covered by the underground sewer network all these years.

Special provisions had to be incorporated to provide the underground sewer line at Adayavalanchan, Chithra and Uthira Veedhis in Srirangam as the network has to run across narrow strips of land between the rear side of houses and the ramparts of the temple.

Since the ramparts of the temple were in a precarious condition in many places, care had to taken to ensure that the structure was not disturbed in any manner. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board that had prepared the detailed estimates for the project, had planned to provide junction boxes in each house to ensure that the rampart was not affected.

The TWAD Board had however said that the work could be executed only after the temple ramparts were repaired. As repair of the temple ramparts could be a long drawn out process, the corporation has now decided to adopt trenchless technology under which the pipelines would be laid without digging trenches. Since this would involve higher investments, revised estimates are to be prepared and submitted to the government for approval. The corporation council on Tuesday approved a proposal to seek revised estimates for the project in Srirangam.

Meanwhile, the TWAD Board has submitted its final project report on the second phase of expansion of the UGSS for areas missed in the city. Phase II of the project would entail an investment of Rs.195 crore. The project report for the third phase was under preparation, corporation sources said.

Locally made C-Frame for BHEL unit

An ancillary unit of BHEL, Tiruchi, has successfully manufactured and supplied India's first ‘C-Frame for stretch reducing mill', a critical component required for making boiler quality tubes, to the public sector unit's Seamless Steel Tube Plant (SSTP) here.

Ancillary unit

Velmurugan Industries, the ancillary unit, emerged as one among the few manufacturers in the world possessing capability to fabricate the critical component, with design provided by SMS Meer, Germany. An attempt was made to develop manufacturing capability of C-Frame indigenously considering the long lead time and huge cost involved in importing the component, according to a BHEL release.

The SSTP was augmenting its capacity from 35,000 tonnes to 86,600 tonnes annually at an investment of about Rs.159 crore for manufacturing seamless steel tubes required for making critical boiler components, the release said.

The Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi, A.V. Krishnan, flagged off the C-Frame from Velmurugan Industries on Wednesday in the presence of S. Karunakaran, General Manager, SSTP, and other senior officials. S. Sampath, Managing Director, Velmurugan Industries, handed over the documents to Mr. Krishnan.

IIM-T to spend Rs.300 cr in first phase of campus construction

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
For academic block, hostels, and quarters, on the 192 acres of land along Tiruchi-Pudukottai highway

Indian Institute of Management–Tiruchirapalli (IIM-T) intends to spend Rs.300 crore in the first phase for construction of academic block, hostels, and quarters for faculty and staff, on the 192 acres of land along Tiruchi-Pudukottai highway allotted to it by the State government.

A state-of-the-art campus will come up at the site. “The Institute will be a symbol of pride for the State of Tamil Nadu,” IIM-T Director Prafulla Agnihotri said. The IIM-T, which now functions on the premises of National Institute of Technology–Tiruchi, is hopeful of moving to the permanent campus by 2014. The campus will have excellent infrastructure with all modern amenities, Dr. Agnihotri said.

The IIM-T has already begun fencing the compound and the main works are expected to commence soon after Bharathidasan University hands over to the Institute a 22-acre portion that it took back subsequently after the initial allotment.

According to University sources, the land was taken back during the DMK regime since a water-yielding borewell was located there.

Since the land that would form a substantial part of the frontage for the IIM-T was taken back without its knowledge, the Institute had sought the support of the district administration to retrieve it.

At a meeting of the IIM-T Director Prafulla Agnihotri and the University Registrar T.Ramaswamy convened by the District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan earlier this year, the Institute expressed its readiness to bear the cost of sustaining the same extent of water supply to the university, after taking possession of the land.

Though the university has not made up its mind as yet to hand over the land, and has constituted a Syndicate Sub-Committee to explore scope to retain it by all means, the district administration has indicated that it would have a final say in getting the 22 acre portion in the frontage transferred to the IIM-T.

29,900 students from 194 schools set to appear for Plus Two exams

About 29,900 students would appear for the Plus Two students in Tiruchi district commencing on March 8.

Speaking at a meeting with officials to discuss the arrangements being made for the public examinations, Collector Jayashree Muralidharan said 13,262 boys and 16,626 girls from 194 schools in the district would appear for the exams in 76 centres.
