Thanks for the photos...Looks like they have a LONG way to go before the first game in March. Seems pretty ambitious on their part. I hope they have the act together!

Don't worry dude remember this is ChCh we are talking about a great city with beauty, class and above all courage, if it were Auckland everyone will be running around moaning about where to build it and who's going to pay for it.

Haha good call Snorky. Cantabs sure are a resilient bunch. I spent 10 years there from 97 - 2007 and miss it heaps. Hope enough people stick around to commit to the rebuild!

LOL, I'm in this photo!
the little black dot underneath the two orange dots on the East Stand. I was ripping all the old number stickers off the seats, VERY boring!

I agree with Youngtim - I think you should stand there and provide a webcam from your cell phone, just stand up start videoing and rotate 90degrees every few minutes .... just like a live stream

No worries tuba guy. After seeing the photo on Facebook of sold out FBS in Dunedin it almost seems like a no brainer to build a similar venue in Chch. Lets face it - chch weather sucks bad and is a huge factor in the poor attendance at Super Rugby games.

Agree...don't want to be unkind but a stadium like AMI for football was without doubt completely the wrong design, sure it would be ideal for a warm city like Miami but not a cold winter city like ChCh. Sometime in the future when the time is right to build a new stadium the stadium MUST have a roof, they've got that roofed wonder in Dunedin to model on. Plenty of time to come with the best design...and the obvious venue for the summer code sport is to develop the Hagley Park cricket oval.

Not sure I'd like to see Christchurch with a roof. Sure, its cold in winter, but its relatively dry - and what about all those crisp clear days? (in summer and winter). Would be a shame not to have games played in that atmosphere.
As long as every seat is covered and the ground is fully enclosed, that would be fine. You'd be amazed just how much difference that makes, rather than being open to the elements, even on a fine night. An enclosed (not 100% roofed) ground would suffice. This is (another) mistake they made with the Cake Tin - very few seats are actually covered, so the ground feels quite open and cold. If there is one ground in NZ that needs a roof, its Wellington. Of course, if Christchurch could fund a retractable roof, then that's the best of both worlds. But they are prohibitively expensive |

Looking alright, disappointing to see the use of that lifeless beige again. I don't want the new stadium to have a roof, what the new stadium needs to to bring back standing room, all seated stadiums are lame.

Totally agree with KLK. As long as all the seats are covered, then it'll be fine. Much prefer an open air stadium. I'm not too worried about the weather, maybe you guys should harden up ;-) Can they have fireworks in a roffed stadium?
We're gonna need to construct something decent to get the big games back. There's only three home games in the Tri Nations so someone is going to miss out. With the quality of Dunedin and Wellington stadiums and that Auckland is always going to get a game, if our stadium isn't decent enough, it's gonna be us! We'll end up getting tests against the likes of Fiji and Scotland etc. But at least we'll still have the might Crusaders! |

Wide view of the temporary stadium (taken yesterday)
![]() Considering this stadium will be around for a few years, couldn't they have just used red seats like Old Trafford and Emirates Stadium? Last edited by master_klon; March 7th, 2012 at 06:45 AM. |

Retractable Roof would be mint. But the way the wind whips through in Chch at night and the obsession with night games for a sport that is primarily played in cold months means that something better than "covered stands" has to be implemented if they expect people to come out.
Games should be sold out, week in week out. It's crazy that NZ attendance is so flippin poor for anything and everything but the perfect aligning of the stars in terms of an All Blacks test or the Crusaders somehow generating enough interest to get people off their couches. I say black out tv coverage for games that don't sell out. That'll get bums in seats again. |

Simple really you build a stadium like that wonder in Dunedin and the fans will come, build a large icebox like they did in ChCh and fans will keep away...why pay to freeze when you can stay at home in the warmth and watch the game on your large flat screen TV while drinking your hot chocolate mmmmmmm yummy.
