A decision on the proposed hotel at Ladywood House in Birmingham city centre has been deferred by councillors for design reasons.
However, plans by Sydney-based StayWell Group and its investment arm Seven Capital to convert Auchinleck House office block into a four-star, 300-bedroom hotel and conference centre and revamp the Five Ways shopping centre were approved at the planning meeting yesterday (1 March).
The Ladywood application for a 224-bedroom, nine-storey hotel at the 1970s office building above New Street station was also scruntinised by councillors at Birmingham City Council.
Planning officers had recommended the plans for approval but the council deferred the decision to look again at the design at a later date.
The plans by Network Rail includes a bar and restaurant on the ninth floor and the recladding of the north and south side of the building.
A row of predominantly vacant shops on Stephenson Street surrounds the ground floor entrance of the tower, which has been empty since July 2008.
The luxury redevelopment of Auchinleck House and Five Ways, which was passed by the council, includes a 300-bedroom hotel, conference space for up to 2,000 guests, 48,000 sq ft of retained retail, 24,500 sq ft of new food retail space, a spa gym and a 200-space car park.
A roof-top restaurant and bar is also part of the application.
