The Karyavattom Campus should be made an integrated township. Repeated creation of new Universities as spin off from KU has dwindled its quality teaching resource.

Anyhow, as UoK is a very large body in itself, bringing uniformity and coordination in administration is a challenge.....One way is to autonomise some reputed colleges like MG college, Mar Ivanious, St. Xavior's college etc....so that the admission and examination related administrative work will be reduced to an extent. I don't understand why these colleges are still under the control of university, when Tamil Nadu has most of it's reputed colleges as autonomous... The University, on the other hand, should concentrate on doing cutting edge research and development through these schools and it's campuses. The CET, premier engineering college of Kerala has a brilliant set of undergraduate students while there are no research groups of students as well as faculty to do relevant research. Since top brains are attracted to UoK in engineering by entrance xams, why not they become a prominent university of world class standards???? |

Hypersonic vehicles can take you to US in two hours !
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Once the hypersonic technology based transportation vehicle being developed by DRDO gets ready, one can travel to the United States and other western countries in about two hours, said Tessy Thomas, project director, Agni, the first-ever woman director of an Indian missile project.
Interacting with students and young women scientists at the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) here on Friday, she said extensive research was going on to develop thermal protection materials such as carbon composites, and nickel/copper-based super alloy for these hypersonic technology vehicles. Technology has made rapid progress, she said. Paddy cultivation in deserts, minimally invasive surgeries, magnetic bullet high speed trains, etc are all part of this advancement. She also told the students that there were two types missiles -- Tactical and Strategic. Tactical ones are short range missiles with fast dynamics, such as Akash. Strategic ones are long range ballistic missiles with nuclear weapons carrying systems with a payload of 48 tons and up to 18 metres long. The missile systems in the country include surface-to-surface ones such as Prithvi and Agni; surface-to-air such as Akash and Patriot; air-to-air missile Astra, air-to-surface Sea Eagle, and anti-tank missiles Nag and Cobra. Recently we have also developed the Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles, she said. Noted material scientist Dr Lakshmi S Nair from the University of Connecticut Health Center (US) spoke of the challenge of developing bio-degradable polymers in tissue engineering for medical devices to support tissue re-generation of cartilage, bone grafts and ligaments. This is a US Army funded project. She is in the city as part of the Indo-US project on cell therapy, which began last year and is set to be completed by 2013. The project team has one research student from Amrita University in India and five students from the US. Source |

There is not a single institute in Kerala that does research in frontier engineering areas (IIST, IISER etc are not considered)........barring KU doing research related to optoelectronics and CUSAT on Photonics. This is the reason why many people are going outside for postgraduate and research quality technical education. However, a point to be noted here is, Kerala has the best primary, secondary and higher secondary education system in the country. We have the most no. of English speaking students and most no. of CBSE schooled children in India. So, at the same time, if we can make our higher education system into a pro-active one with a major role in the uplifting of societal standards, then we can say that we have a world class education system....... Thanks Mr 25Dude25 for the beautiful picture of the Engineering College.
I hope that it refers to the Kilimanoor College. I am happy to note that we have so many Engineering Colleges in and around the city. Sure, the list of Medical Colleges has registered a growth in number, but I am sad to note that 2 proposals namely the Army Medical College at Pangode and the Reilway Medical College at Pettah have not materialized so far. In the case of the Railway Medical College, our esteemed MP Mr Tharoor is making good efforts to get it started where land is available and I am gratified to see that . I wish his efforts will succeed. Cheers!!! |
