Melbourne is the coolest mainland city in winter, however over summer it generally gets the big heat waves with very very high temperatures a normality. Adelaide and Perth arguably still have more hotter days.

It's been a great summer in Melbourne so far. Temperatures have been consistently high and we've had high minimums too.

Been raining most the day in Adelaide. Love it.
Wish some of the heavier stuff would come down our way.

wat? Canberra averages -0.1c/11.4c in it's coolest month - Melbourne averages 6.0c/13.4c - even Adelaide is somewhat similar to Melbourne in winter at 7.5c/15.3c

Hobart is the coldest 'large' city all year round only hitting slightly over 20c in summer, but Canberra wins for winter hands down.

why does a system like what south eastern australia is experiencing now cause so much flooding, when similar weather events in the US don't seem to. Is it because the way the land/terrain is different? such as natural flood plains or natural drainage? is it a difference in infrastructure?

That low north of Brisbane looks like a Cyclone!!! It even looks like it has an 'eye' - though you wouldn't call it that at this stage. Does anyone think there is a remote chance of it developing into a weak cyclone?

I thought the exact same thing when I had a look. And apparently, BOM thinks so too possibly:

Quote:
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for Heavy Rain and Damaging Winds
For people in the Southeast Coast district and parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett
district.
Issued at 2:10 pm on Monday 5 March 2012

Synoptic Situation: At 1:30 pm AEST, a low pressure system [1002hPa] was located
over land near Double Island Point. The low is expected to remain slow moving
today before moving in a northerly direction overnight and during Tuesday.

Heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is expected about the Southeast
Coast and southeastern parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett districts today,
particularly about the Fraser and Sunshine Coasts and adjacent inland areas.
Localised 24 hour rainfall totals in excess of 200mm are likely, especially
about the Fraser and Sunshine Coasts and adjacent inland areas. Locations which
may be affected include Fraser Island, Gympie, the Sunshine Coast, Redcliffe,
Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast.

At 1:30pm AEST, moderate rain was located on radar between Double Island Point
and Caloundra and over adjacent inland areas. In the 4.5 hours since 9:00am
AEST, 98mm of rainfall was recorded at Cooloolabin Dam with widespread falls of
over 70mm across much of the Sunshine Coast.

Damaging winds, with peak gusts in excess of 90km/h, are expected about the
coast, islands and adjacent inland areas between Double Island Point and Point
Lookout.

The low may possibly develop into a weak tropical cyclone if it moves offshore.
However, expected impacts over land are not likely to worsen. A separate
Tropical Cyclone Warning will be issued if necessary.

Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams in these districts;
refer to www.bom.gov.au/qld/warnings.
Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Monday.
