Three-decade excuse falls flat
- Court hands murder case to CID, rejects Mamata govt bid to blame Left legacy

http://www.telegraphindia.com/112030...y_15206997.jsp

Quote:
Calcutta High Court today termed as “not satisfactory” the police probe into the murder of two CPM leaders and handed over the case to the CID, at one point reminding the state government that “it cannot blame the system and get away with it” on an administrative lapse.

This is the first big blow to the Mamata Banerjee government in a sensitive case where the police have come under a cloud for alleged acts of commission and omission in the murder of former CPM legislator Pradip Tah and district party leader Kamal Gayen in Burdwan on February 22.

Equally stinging for the government was the observation by the court not to blame the system.

The issue came up when Justice Patel asked public prosecutor Debashish Roy: “What is the state doing? Why have the post-mortem reports not been placed before the court along with the case diary?”

Roy said it takes “months” to get a post-mortem report because the Left Front government, during its 34-year rule, had made the “system” such that delays were inevitable. “This practice had been started during the Left Front regime,” Roy told the court. “How can this government change the system in only nine months?”

Justice Patel then replied: “You cannot blame the system and get away with it on this issue. We are not going to hear such an argument.”

After this, within a couple of hours, the state government placed a copy of the post-mortem report before the court.

Police sources later told The Telegraph that the post-mortem reports were received on February 22 — the day of the murders — itself. The failure to attach the reports with the case papers is being seen as a fallout of the alleged indifference of the administration to the case in which Trinamul supporters have been arrested.

Cries of bias had risen soon after the murders with CPM leaders claiming armed policemen had remained spectators and also insinuating that someone might have tipped off the assailants that Tah was leading the procession that was attacked.

The perception of discrimination had gained ground after the police passed up the chance to seek custody of the four arrested, following which they were sent to judicial custody — an unusual development in a murder case.

internal assessments have no meaning or relevance in CU system. the only thing that counts is the univ exam.

Cop soft on attack accused

http://www.telegraphindia.com/112030...y_15203789.jsp

Quote:
Constable Tarak Das may have been suspended but police are yet to lay their hands on the other accused in the assault on three journalists and the ransacking of a CPM office at Gangulybagan during Tuesday’s strike.

Das has been named in at least two FIRs lodged with Patuli police station, including the one by Anandabazar Patrika journalist Subhasish Ghatak.

The scribe’s complaint mentions eight more names — Manik Banik, Mrityunjoy Mondal, Pulak Chowdhury, Monu Saha, Dasu Saha, Jadav Das, Babu Saha and Raju Saha. All are at large.

“Das, being a cop, was a soft target. The rest are backed by Trinamul and police are scared to touch them,” said an officer privy to the investigation.

Apparently, no attempts have been made to trace the accused after raids on their houses on Tuesday night drew a blank.

Some officers pointed out that acting against errant Trinamul supporters was becoming increasingly difficult under the current regime.

“Take for instance the arrest of chief minister’s nephew Akash Banerjee. Special police commissioner Sivaji Ghosh openly said Akash had been held on the chief minister’s order. If a senior officer like Ghosh says that a person accused of assaulting an inspector on duty could be arrested only after the chief minister’s intervention, imagine the pressure junior cops are facing when it comes to dealing with Trinamul supporters,” said an officer.

To fight rape, Mamata Banerjee shuts Bengal nightclubs

Quote:
It is better to be safe than merry. That seems to be the idea behind the West Bengal government’s decision to close down nightclubs across the state at the stroke of midnight.

Details..

Everyone has noticed how now didi keeps the state's top officials in waiting on the dias and then throws questions at them to which they have to answer "yes" [or off with their heads].

In Jhargram in Jan of this year, she made an announcement of tender papers being already floated for a bridge. She put a senior govt official on the spot who had no option but to say "yes" and not contradict her.

http://www.telegraphindia.com/112011...y_15000375.jsp

Quote:
Her first question — about a bridge from Bharsaghat to Nayagram, which she had announced on July 12 — was directed at chief secretary Samar Ghosh, seated on the stage.

As a packed stadium looked on, Mamata said the “tenders for the bridge have been floated” and asked Ghosh about the status.

Ghosh tried answering from his seat but the chief minister said: “You are a government officer. Please come and tell them.”

The chief secretary stepped forward, took the microphone and said the tenders had been floated.
Recently read in a newspaper that the bridge funding approval only came in 22nd Feb and no tenders have been floated yet.

Calling the tender now will prove to be another embarassing affair. So they are exploring ways of handing over the project to Martin Burn without going through the tender process.

The incident if true shows a disconnect somewhere.

There is no disconnect, at that time people just started questioning MB's data and promises and she wanted to buttress her claim. The question is what would happened if Chief Secy said in that podium that 'he doesn't know'. The real point is even the top officer of the state opted to malign his record rather than saying something contracdictory (though true, now its revealed) or not saying anything.

Well it's actually Jeet Ganguly, Siddharth Haldipur, Sangeet Haldipur.

Jeet Ganguly was also the music director of 2010 action flick 'Josh', starring Jeet, Srabonti, Puneet Issar

Sahitya Akademi awardee is a CISF constable

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/sa...stable/916009/

Quote:
When he was just 12 years old, Aditya Kumar Mandi saw his parents being excommunicated from their village — Burughutu in Bankura district of West Bengal — because they bought two bighas of land from another farmer.

“In our village, we could only own ancestral land,” says Mandi, now 38. “It was very cruel. People were forbidden from speaking to us, we could not use the village well, and our land was taken away. One day, my father left home and never returned,” he adds.

That incident inspired him to start writing — mainly poems — when he was just 19 years old, to show “how man can be man’s worst enemy”, even as he joined the CISF. Earlier this month, Mandi got the Sahitya Akademi award for his contribution to poetry in Santhali language.

Now posted at Farakka, in Malda district of Bengal, Mandi has published 14 books in Santhali, including an autobiography.

“The Constitution of India can forgive them (his fellow villagers) for their superstitions, but my pen will not. That was my first thought,” says the CISF constable, recalling how he started writing his first poem, Aam Do Okhal Ka (Who are you). Between 1996 and 1999 he published a series of poems on Santhali beliefs.
Nashik translator bags Sahitya Akademi Award 2011

http://articles.timesofindia.indiati...-copper-plaque

Quote:
Jagat Debnath, a retired senior supervisor in the accounts department of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), has been awarded the 2011 Sahitya Akademi Award for translation from 22 contenders. The award ceremony will be held in August 2012. Debnath bagged the award for translating renowned Marathi writer Namdev Kamble's novel Raghav Vel into 'Raghober Din Raat' in Bengali. Kamble had won a Sahitya Akademi Award for the same novel in '95.

Debnath has been writing essays, books and has been translating books from Marathi to Bengali since 1990.

Originally from Kolkata, Debnath came to Nashik in 1972 when he joined HAL. He did not give up his passion for writing and gradually developed a fascination for Marathi literature. This in turn led him to start translating good Marathi literature for Bengali readers. "My Marathi colleagues at HAL were very helpful when I started translating," he said.

Bengal shines on national screen

http://articles.timesofindia.indiati...ial-jury-award

Quote:
There were 17 Bengali films in contention for the National Awards this year. While "Baishey Srabon", "Noukadubi", "Iti Mrinalini", "Nobel Chor", "Elar Char Adhyay", "Jumeli", "Aparajita Tumi" and "Chaplin" jostled for national recognition, in the final analysis it was only the cast and crew of "Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona", "Abosheshey", "Laptop" and "Noukadubi" who made Bengal proud.

Kolkata's very own, Onir, bagged the best Hindi film award for "I Am". Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya, who also has a Bengal connect, made the cut too.

The citation for Special Jury Award acknowledges Anjan Dutt's versatility and describes him as "an actor, singer, writer and director. Says Neel Dutta, who got the Best Music Direction (songs), "This is my best birthday gift.".

Composer Mayookh Bhaumik was confined to his hospital bed when he got the news of being adjudged the Best Music Director for the background score in Kaushik Ganguly's "Laptop".

Indranil Ghosh, who has bagged his second National Award, says that the very fact that Bengal produced 17 films good enough to compete at that level says loads about the kind of work that's happening in this industry now. "I got my first National Award for "Chokher Bali". I am in Mumbai to meet my producers for my directorial debut when I heard that I have got the Best Production Design award for "Noukadubi".

Amlan Datta's "Bom" got Rajat Kamal for the Best Anthropological/ Ethnographic Film, Aparna Sanyal's "A Drop of Sunshine" was adjudged the Best Educational Film. In the Best Writing on cinema category, Aniruddha Bhattacharjee bagged the award on the Best Book on Cinema for penning RD Burman The Man, The Music along with Balaji Vittal. Says Spandan Banerjee, who got a Special Mention for his documentary "You Don't Belong" on the journey of the song, "Lalpahari deshe ja", "It's a very nice feeling especially so because the documentary pushes the form. The song, "Lalpahari", has long travelled out of Bengal. This national recognition will, perhaps, take it beyond Bengal once again."

From documentaries to feature films, from re-recording to direction, and composing to acting - it seems the 59th National Awards yet again reinforces Bengal's bond with aesthetics in the world of movies.
National Award: Roopa Ganguly wins the Best Female Playback Singer

http://articles.timesofindia.indiati...lessons-tagore

Quote:
Roopa Ganguly was busy helping with the geography lessons of her son when she first got to know that she had bagged the National Award as the Best Female Playback Singer.

Even if she is excited, her voice doesn't quiver to suggest her feelings. Of course, she is happy that her rendition of two Tagore's songs in " Abosheshey" - "Dure kothao" and "Bijon ghore" - has bagged her the award but life still has a lot more for her.

Her citation reads that she was given the Award "for her husky and haunting voice that gives a gentle, nostalgic tone and tenor to the film, "Abosheshey". The languid raw sensuality of her singing is heightened by the absence of musical accompaniment."

Says Roopa, "My first reaction when I heard the news is that I ought to quit smoking now. It is an old habit and now I realize that kicking the butt is important. I need to take care of my voice."
