In the strictest ense it has not been wound up, but there is an application to wind up, so unless Waygood is going to contest it the distinction is a rather fine one...

I don't want, need or even voted for "cultural leadership" and if you want to be in the business of providing "matters of substance and consequence" let the free market decide it's value.
Again this is a project that would benefit enormously if a large digital display was fixed to the front of the building showing how much it costs. Incidentally how much has been spent on it so far? |

![]() BALTIC 39, a new cultural hub for visual art based in the heart of Newcastle town centre, throws open its doors at nightime for the very first time, especially for The Late Shows. Explore the stunning Grade II listed building conversion, the first BALTIC programmed exhibition and meet the studio holders. An exhibition in BALTIC 39’s gallery space will be open, curated by internationally recognised and Newcastle-born sculptor Phyllida Barlow and features the work of a young generation of artists working in the UK including Anna Barnham, Elliot Dodd and Iain Hales. The studioholders will offer an intriguing evening comprising open studios, a group show of contemporary art, performance and installation. Live performances start from 9pm including artists Angela Jane Kennedy, Carole Luby, electro artists Silo Portem and an installation by Tim Dannenburg. Postgraduate Fine Art students from Northumbria University are also showing works in the newly opened studio resource. This inaugural exhibition marks a new and exciting resource for students at Northumbria and artwork has been selected by BALTIC Professor, Christine Borland. Christine will also have an open house/studio for an informal chat about her practice, research and the exciting networks she is forging. Address: 31 - 39 High Bridge Newcastle NE1 1EW http://www.thelateshows.org.uk/venues/baltic-39.html |

Grannys comment again
(The cartoon is referencing the years of delays and the "stamp" is referencing the massive rising costs.)
image hosted on flickr ![]() After today's anger at Royal Mail for announcing swingeing price rises of 39% for uk postage stamps, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17522500 I made this BALTIC 39% imitation postage stamp to raise the juxtaposition of soaring costs. image hosted on flickr

Yes it's exactly what we needed in Newcastle an output for London based artists who went to the Slade and this woman's husband and sister in law. Whats not to like!

A-N Magazine April 2012

![]() A-N gets £211K this year, £216K next year and another £222K the year after from ACE. It is chaired by ES, who was chair of Waygood when governance problems surfaced. Last edited by grewlike topsy; April 7th, 2012 at 10:43 PM. Reason: On advice I've removed name and replaced with initials |

![]() ![]() Oink! Oink! Just what will be the management and governance of Baltic 39? Are the 'old guard' still in situ? I think we (the people) should have a full enquiry into what has happened here and not just be fobbed with, we'll soon forget when it opens. Programming 'experimental work'? That will be interesting to see! |

Balticus Waygoodicus
WOW NH well spotted!
Quote:
Good questions Adrian, I'm not sure what the answer is. The old allegiances and vested interests are still very much in place. It is true however that ES has stepped down as chair of A-N Magazine last week but remains on the board. Waygood Gallery Ltd did also finally dissolve on the 27 March 2012, just before the end of the financial year and therefore avoiding for a third year in a row the need to submit any accounts to Companies House. I very much doubt we will ever know what happened to all the money. I was at the launch event on the Thursday evening and was amazed to see four ex-members of the Waygood board, ES, CC, HB and MB all standing around chatting and drinking the free Prosecco as if nothing untoward had happened. image hosted on flickr ![]() . If anyone fancies explaining what's going on here in simple English for those of us who don't know the whole tangled back story, that'd be nice.

Second that. My reading is that allegedly the old 'company' Waygood was very badly managed, and that Baltic has taken over the venue but that some of the previous management team are still involved. However... more details [subject legal constraints] would be good..

Baltic 39
![]() ![]() What's wrong with you man, can you not understand 'Artspeak'? To quote above the purpose of B39 is to 'generate a more process based relationship to installing exhibitions' I would have thought it was self explanatory? ![]() What do these people eat for breakfast? 'Modern' art is 50% to be enjoyed and 50% to have a laugh at. But wonder who is having a laugh at whose expense? Nice to hear the luvvies are still quaffing and we are paying. I'd also propose that the various sponsors, funders, tenants and other stakeholders are implicated with at least some of the responsibility for the Waygood while 'on their watch'. In fact, I struggle to see how they can be excused from responsibility. |

The Grauniad has some numbers I wasn't aware of. I am not sure anyone with 'oversight' comes out of this too well. As I recall there were also one, possibly two messy tribunals [no view on the outcome, but can t havr done the gallery any good]. |

Yes there were two very messy tribunals. I won my case... without any professional legal support http://www.flickr.com/photos/topsy/4554964123/lightbox/ http://is.gd/DzF9fv The second tribunal was much more complex and messier than my case. The appeal was heard in London and was upheld... image hosted on flickr ![]() At the re-run trial the Waygood barristers did prevent case against them being upheld.
