Hope these proposals don't mean the old library is being pulled down. Would be a shame as it is a good building, although the interior could do with being renovated.

Only had a very quick look through the planning app, but I think it's set to be demolished.

I'm surprised to see the running track is being removed to replaced with a new one all of 50m away

To some extent I agree with Ruskin when he says that buildings should never be pulled down but renovated and restored because they reflect ideas and values of a certain period of time. I really don't see how Birmingham University library is so bad that it is better to simply demolish. At least they could keep the main building, incorporate it in the new building and get rid of the later extensions to the north, which I think are not as good quality as the original library building, which I think was built in the fifties.
Also does anyone know what's going on with Chamberlain hall? When I was at Birmingham five years ago it was vacated, I think for demolition but till about a year ago it was still there. |

I think the issue is with the location rather than the building. They were going to refurb it but they now they want to create a large open space at the heart of the university and the library is in the way
