Thai AirAsia to Colombo
Shirajiv SIRIMANE
AirAsia, the World’s best Low-Cost Airline, celebrates their inaugural flights from Colombo to Bangkok yesterday.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, “We are very excited to open up a world of opportunities for people to shop, sight-see, and experience all the flavors that Thailand has to offer, at a very affordable price. “Since tickets for this route went on sale on 4 January 2012, we have received tremendous positive feedback and we are very pleased to see that there is much demand for travel between the two cities”.

He said that they are currently operating on a 70% load factor and this would increase to 80% soon.

“As a low-cost carrier to fly to Sri Lanka, AirAsia is committed to offering the best fares on our brand-new Airbus A320 planes”. Bijleveld also believes that this new route will bring in a surge of visitors and business people from Thailand which will significantly stimulate Sri-Lanka’s travel industry. “Many Thai Buddhists love to visit Sri Lanka’s temples and religious sites during their Buddhist pilgrimage. We look forward to promoting such a beautiful destination along with the country’s UNESCO World Heritage sites”, said the CEO.

Currently around 50, 000 Sri Lankans travel to Thailand and only 5,000 fly from Thailand to Sri Lanka. “With AirAsia this gap would narrow,” he said.

Asked why they were late to include Colombo to their radar he said that it was because they first wanted to concentrate on domestic, China and India.

On the other hand, Bangkok’s temples, colorful night life, and mouth-watering cuisine is now within everyone’s reach and budget, thanks to AirAsia’s daily flights. The 180-seat Airbus A320 has leather seats and a variety of in-flight meals to choose from.

Apart from Bangkok, AirAsia’s connectivity extends to other destinations in Thailand that passengers can easily connect to from Bangkok including world-famous beach destinations such as Phuket or the charming city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Thai AirAsia currently flies to 12 destinations within Thailand and 16 international destinations from Bangkok including Singapore, Bali, Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzen, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, Chennai, Chongqing, Colombo, Kolkata, Yangon, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

AirAsia, the leading and largest low-cost carrier in Asia, services the most extensive network with approximately 139 routes. Within 10 years of operations, AirAsia has carried over 100 million guests and grown its fleet from just two aircraft to approximately 106.

The airline today is proud to be a truly ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) airline with established operations based in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines servicing a network stretching across all ASEAN countries, China, India, Sri Lanka and Australia.

Mattala Airport to be ready by October
March 2, 2012, 9:50 pm

By Franklin R. Satyapalan

The government had made steady progress in the construction of Sri Lanka’s second international Airport, at Mattala.

It was scheduled to be completed by the end of October this year, Airport and Aviation Services Minister Priyankara Jayaratne said.

He said that the Exim Bank of China had provided Funding to the tune of US $ 209 million for the project and the contractors were China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd and the contract period was 36 months. According to the original contract the construction was to be completed by March 15, 2013, but with the steady progress being made by the Engineers it would be completed by October end this year. The construction was being done under the supervision of Engineers of the Airport and Aviation Services.

Almost 80 per cent of the work on the 3,500-metre long and 75-metre wide runway, 40 per cent of the work on the Air Terminal with the capacity to serve one million passengers, 20 per cent of the work on the cargo terminal with capacity to handle 45,000 tonnes of cargo annually, have been completed.

Nearly half the work on ancillary and fire services building, control tower, apron to park ten aircraft, two kilometres of external road and the internal access roads had been completed, he said.

Minister Jayaratne also said that the Government had taken a policy decision not to import any second hand aircraft for Sri Lankan Airlines in the future as it was economic in the long run to purchase brand new aircraft on soft lease. Then one need not have spent on major repairs for around six years to a decade.

This should be all tourists first taste of stepping out of the airport terminal into 'Sri lanka' - lush, green, tropical - rather than that dark 'tunnel' on the left that most arrivals have to walk through

Govt. to embark on Stage II of US $ 500 mn BIA expansion project
March 3, 2012, 7:27 pm

By Franklin R. Satyapalan

Stage II of the expansion of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) will go ahead, as planned, with US $ 500 million funding from JICA, Airport and Aviation Services Minister, Priyankara Jayaratne said.

The government has ambitious plans to develop Sri Lanka into a hub for commercial aviation in the Asian region in 2012. This would act as a catalyst for the growth of the country ‘s tourism industry, he noted.

He said that on the advice of the President, SriLankan Airlines has taken a policy decision to acquire only brand new aircraft to increase its fleet as it has been found that new aircraft would not require any major repairs or maintenance for six to ten years. The national carrier will also add Melbourne to its portfolio shortly thereby increasing the number of destinations to 63 in 33 countries.

The government has planned to complete construction of the country’s second International Airport at Mattala by October 2012 and implement the development of the domestic airport network in the country, the Minister said.

The agreement for the BIA expansion project will be signed between Finance Secretary Dr P. B. Jayasundara and JICA officials shortly.Construction is expected to be completed by 2016, Jinadasa Rajapaksa, an Ministry official said.

With the proposed expansion, the BIA passenger handling capacity would be doubled to 12 million per annum. The cargo handling capacity would also be increased to 500,000 metric tons from present capacity of 250,000 metric tons, he noted,

A new split level passenger terminal building which separates arrivals and departures vertically, a new pier with eight boarding gates and 14 passenger boarding bridges with a dedicated gate comprising two passenger boarding bridges for the operations of the new A-380 Airbus, will be included in the proposed new complex, he explained.

There would also be a remote apron and an additional nine parking stands to ease air traffic movements. There would be a tax free apparel shopping mall at the Katunayake BOI Zone to attract more business visitors to Sri Lanka. The tax free shopping mall is to be located adjacent to the arrival terminal and connected by a sky bridge, he said.

The security, administration, fire services buildings and female rest rooms for navigational staff will also be expanded along with the refurbishment of the porches and departure and arrival terminals.

Sri Lanka airport light industry proposals to close on March 15: official

March 09, 2012 (LBO) - Requests for proposals to start medium and light industries near Sri Lanka's new international airport in Hambantota will close on March 15, the head of a state-run airport agency said.

"Companies can visit there see land available there," chairman of Sri Lanka's Airport and Aviation Services Ltd, Prasanna Wickramasuriya told a forum organized by Sri Lanka's Shippers Academy.
"There are 150 acres for aviation related industries."

He said aircraft maintenance and repair industries and flight academies are being sought.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by end 2012 or the first quarter of 2013.

Its runway is now 60 percent completed, Wickramasuriya said.
The 219 million dollar Chinese financed and built airport will have 10 parking bays and 2 aero bridges, he said. It had a capacity of 45,000 metric tonnes a year for cargo.

The airport will be connected to the Hambantota seaport via a road which will take 20 minutes to traverse he said
