Sri Lanka set to lose Kingfisher connections
Mar 21, 2012 (LBO) - India's debt-laden Kingfisher Airlines is to cancel all international flights, a move that would affect its connections to Sri Lanka, news reports said. Flights to Dubai, Colombo, Kathmandu, Bangkok will stop operating by Sunday, March 25, 2012. "We have decided to suspend our international operations as we are not on IATA platforms. So, there is no sense flying abroad," Kingfisher Airlines Chairman Vijay Mallya was quoted in news reports as telling reporters in New Delhi. The airline has been suspended from the International Air Transport Association’s account settlement system – which settles accounts between the world’s airlines and travel agencies – for non-payment of fees. The carrier reported a net loss of 90 million US dollars for the three months ending December 31, a 75 percent increase from a year earlier. http://www.lankabusinessonline.com/f...nid=1692696531 |

Sri Lanka gets Japanese loan for airport expansion
Mar 28, 2012 (LBO) - Japan has given Sri Lanka a loan of 42 billion Yen (about 66 billion rupees) with the bulk of it meant for expanding the island's sole international airport, a Japanese embassy statement said.
"The loans under this scheme are offered on highly concessionary terms and conditions and are administered by Japan’s International Cooperation Agency," it said. About 45 billion rupees will be loaned for the second phase of the Bandaranaike International Airport Development Project to improve and modernize facilities and build a second passenger terminal. This was aimed at coping with the increased air traffic and transforming the airport as a main commercial and business hub in the region, the statement said. In 1999 Japan provided 12,384 million Yen for improving the facilities of the airport including the construction of a modern departure passenger terminal currently in use. Japan will also loan 3,935 million Yen (about six billion rupees) for improving health facilities in the country. This includes strengthening the drug production capacity of the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation to resolve drug shortages in state hospitals, upgrading rural hospitals, and giving 125 ambulances to rural hospitals. Another loan of 9,573 million Yen (about 15 billion rupees) will be provided for building a power transmission line from north-central Habarana to Veyangoda to improve the stability and reliability of the transmission system. The statement said the projects "are symbolic in terms of Japan’s long-term cooperation in Sri Lanka’s overall development process and strengthening the bonds of goodwill between our two countries." ................. wow whopping $400 million for the airport,,, hmmm wonder what they gonna build

Sri Lanka to open sea plane landing facility near airport next month
Wed, Mar 28, 2012, 09:56 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. Mar 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka is expediting the work on building a sea plane landing facility in Seeduwa Dadugam Oya near the country's international airport in Katunayake. The project to set up the facility for the convenience of the incoming tourists is jointly carried out by the Tourism authority of the ministry of Economic Development and the Provincial Road Development Authority. The facility will have an access road and a terminal facility to take the tourists arriving in the country directly from the airport to their desired resorts elsewhere in the country. The passengers to and from the Katunayake international airport can embark and disembark from the facility. The Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, who visited the site Tuesday to inspect the progress of the facility, has instructed authorities to expedite the work to be able to make use of the service by first week of April. The demand for sea plane facility for internal tourism from the inbound tourists is on the increase, the Ministry says. http://www.colombopage.com/archive_1...32952019CH.php |

GOSL spends USD 7.7M monthly on lease of UL aircraft
http://www.island.lk/index.php?page_...de_title=49065 As per the above article it covers the entire fleet of UL. So, to put things in perspective: 1. UL has not been paying the leases on their aircrafts as above. 2. UL does not pay for fuel as CPC foots the bills (on credit basis, but they never get paid). So, where does all the revenues made by UL go? |
