Cebu Cultural Center Opens in March
Xerxes S. Alkuino

Cebu as “The Broadway of the Philippines.”

This is the vision of the Provincial Government of Cebu and the Philippine Exhibits and Themeparks Corporation (PETCO) as they prepare to open the Cebu Cultural Center (CCC) on March 16.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia met with Consul Jose Luis Yulo, Jr, Petco chairman, and Provincial Engineer Eulogio Pelayre to discuss preparations which, if finalized, may include the popular play “Les Miserables.”

Yulo said there will be live theatrical performances from abroad for the Cebuanos to enjoy.

“The real objective is to be able to create an awareness and to upgrade the talents within Cebu that we may have Cebuano-organized or produced shows,” Yulo said. Garcia offered the management of the CCC to PETCO which also currently manages the Cebu International Convention Center.

On March 16, a multi-colored logo of the CCC will be unveiled. The logo was designed by a Nachi Ugarte, a Cebuano brand designer who lives in Manila but traces his roots to the Aboitiz clan in Cebu .

Ugarte said the concept is based on the modernistic building of CCC and the cultural side of Cebu.

Cebu Cultural Center to open with Les Miserables presentation
March 17, 2012

CEBU CITY – A presentation of the world-famous play, Les Miserables, will mark the formal opening Friday of the 1,600-capacity Cebu Cultural Center (CCC) across the University of the Philippines-Cebu main campus in Lahug, Cebu City.

The play, produced by the Cebu provincial government, will start at 7 p.m.

It will have daily matinee and gala performances until March 18.

Garcia said the CCC, which had a soft opening last August, has a performing stage at the ground floor and two winding stairs up to the upper level and a seating capacity of 1,600.

The Philippine Exhibit and Themeparks Corp. (Petco) that manages CCC envisioned Cebu to become the Broadway of the Philippines.

XTERRA WEEKEND IN CEBU!

Quote:
Retracing history
By Iste S. Leopoldo
Friday | March 16, 2012

TRIATHLON events are resurging in Cebu. This however, is not a first for the city as Cebu was once the triathlon Mecca of the country in the 90s.

This was divulged by Arland Macasieb, who will be one of the personalities to grace the Vaseline Men Xterra trail running today and offroad triathlon championship tomorrow in Liloan.

Macasieb, one of the country’s top triathletes, who made a decent finish in last week’s Xterra off-road triathlon in Guam, said that when he came here in Cebu in 1999, triathlon was already a popular sport.

“Cebu is the original capital of triathlon in the Philippines,” Macasieb said.

Macasieb added that he was happy that another international triathlon, the Cobra 70.3 Ironman Philippines, was moved to Cebu from CamSur.

“I am happy that it’s in Cebu. I like CamSur, I had a fun time there but the swim segment of triathlon in the Philippines should be in the ocean. It’s fun doing wakeboarding there but for swimming, it’s better competing with waves, with the sand, fish and the corals as these make the course more challenging. Aside from this, it may showcases our beaches,” said Macasieb, who is the defending men’s elite champion of the Ironman.

Furniture exporters remain optimistic
By Ehda M. Dagooc, The Freeman
Saturday | March 17, 2012

CEBU, Philippines - Despite long term challenges faced by the furniture industry, exporters are still confident for near market recovery and business improvement, while refusing to consider the sector as ‘sunset industry.”

“The market is still challenging, but we are not giving up. The more that players are driven now to compete and more passionate about the industry. This is interesting time for us,” said furniture exporter Charles Streegan, who owns one of the largest furniture manufacturing companies in Cebu, the Pacific Traders.

Streegan who is also a former trustee of the Cebu Furniture Industry Foundation Inc., (CFIF) said that players are still fighting to sustain the life-span of the furniture exporting industry specifically in Cebu, although some observers are saying that already in the “sunset” path.

Streegan said that the industry is seeing slow recovery in the other markets however, including the United States, although exporters are on its continuous move to explore other emerging markets around the world.

“We continue to make products for the market, and be relevant,” said Streegan adding that Cebu’s strength in the furniture making in the world, couldn’t be shaken by any stronger challenges, and will continue to stay.

Cebu, C. Visayas forest areas to be divided into zones
By Cadeze R. Mongaya, Cebu Daily News
Sunday | February 5, 2012

A de-zoning of Cebu’s protected forest landscape to divide protected zones from production zones will be completed within the year, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas (DENR-7) said yesterday.

DENR-7 spokesman Eddie Llamedo said they completed the assessment and delineation of boundaries between forest lands, national parks and agricultural lands in Central Visayas early this year.

The region’s forest landscape totaled 8,838.355 kilometers of which Cebu has 36 percent or 3,184.83 kilometers. The Central Cebu Protected Landscape has a land area of 29,062 hectares, which will be de-zoned into strict or protected zone and multiple-used zones.

Llamedo said no economic activities will be done in the protected zone, where endemic trees like the Cebu cinnamon tree and many animal species thrive.

“The delineation is necessary to strengthen our environmental protection initiatives on protected areas and national parks against degradation or exploitation through support and cooperation of stakeholders,” Dichoso said.

The CCPL covers five watersheds: the Buhisan Watershed Forest Reserve, Mananga Watershed Forest Reserve, Sudlon National Park, Central Cebu National Park and the Kotkot-Lusaran Watershed Forest Reserve.

CEBU MARINE PROTECTED AREAS

Cebu Island lies in the center of the Visayas, known as an area of high biodiversity and fisheries resources. Historically the marine resources of these islands have provided the primary source of food and livelihood for human populations. Coastal dwellers, until the present, comprise a traditional fishing economy that depends largely on reefs and their associated fisheries. Presently, in addition to fisheries, the coral reefs provide increasing economic revenues to communities from their tourism appeal. Visitors snorkel, dive and pay fees to enter Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) for recreation.

There are a total of 81 Marine Protected Areas in Cebu Province covering a total of 1,716 hectares of coral reefs.

Metro Cebu for me is a well planned metropolis. Been here for the very first time last February on a 4 day vacation. The taxi ride from Mactan Airport to Colon on clear sky Sunday morning was exhilarating. Firstly, I got to see Marcelo Fernan Bridge, then, the whole stretch of Cebu City Harbor for me was panoramic. The boulevard that runs through it blends well. Then the contrast between Colon and Fuente Circle makes the beautiful Osmena Blvd even more exciting. The view from the Crown Regency's Sky Adventure observatory is amazingly great. From Taoist Temple, the skyline of Ayala Business Park is so magnificent. I can't help but make a write-up about Cebu on my blog.
