MAURITANIA | Nouadhibou Wind Farm | 4.4MW | U/C

Works on a wind farm in Nouadhibou, Mauritania started
March 18, 2012

NOUAKCHOTT – On Wednesday the President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, kicked off the works of the first Mauritanian wind farm at Nouadhibou which aims to produce renewable energy to supply electricity in the country.

This represents a central component of the SNIM company’s program for the country’s development and a pioneer project in the use of renewable energy. The power generated will be 4.5 megawatts coming from 16 wind generators at a cost of 7.8 million euros supported by the SNIM funds.

In a word for the occasion, the Minister of Public Service and Administration Modernisation, Acting Minister of Oil, Energy and Mines, Ms. Maty Mint Hamady, reaffirmed the willingness of the government to generalize access to electricity and to promote the use of renewable energy to ease the impact of high energy prices on the international level and to contribute to environmental protection.

She reviewed the series of major projects started in the field of electric power on instructions from the President of the Republic.

For his part, Mr. Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Oudaa, deputy general manager of SNIM, said it is committed to move forward in line with guidance from the President of the Republic, in the pilot projects for exploitation of "our potential in wind and solar energy." He added that by mastering the operational technologies of these projects the SNIM company will help reduce the country’s dependence vis-ŕ-vis conventional, expensive and polluting energy.

The head of state visited the facilities of the plant and listened to explanations about her role in the production of clean electric power and in encouraging the use of renewable energy.
