#COMPLETED: RITZ CARLTON GRAND CANAL HOTEL

The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal to open with a 17,222 sq foot swimming pool in front

Abu Dhabi has always been quite selective when it comes to offering the best in luxury and lifestyle. The Emirate’s hospitality sector is now going to get a fashionable addition with the Ritz-Carlton signing up with Abu Dhabi National Hotels (ADNH) for a waterfront hotel. The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal will be spread across 54 acres and will boast 447 guestrooms and suites and 85 villas. It will be shaped like a crescent and will be Venetian-themed. As goes the name, it will feature a Grand Canal in the front where guests at the villa can enjoy stunning views while being pampered by a personalized butler service. It will also feature ESPA - a 21,500-square-foot spa, a fitness center and outdoor tennis courts, three restaurants - an Italian restaurant, steak and seafood restaurant and a Middle Eastern and an Asian restaurant. It will also have a rooftop terrace that will offer food and beverage services as well as two poolside bars and a lobby lounge. The main attraction however will be a 17,222 sq foot swimming pool in front of the hotel. The property is expected to be open late this year.

Abu Dhabi’s Ritz Carlton delayed until September this year

The opening of Abu Dhabi’s first Ritz Carlton hotel has been pushed back until September this year, after delays to the property’s redesign.

The project was initially designed as a JW Marriott, but revamped as the Ritz Carlton Grand Canal hotel in April last year amid changes to market conditions.

Developer Abu Dhabi National Hotels (ADNH) company said it was targeting a revised scheduled opening of December 2011, but alterations to the project’s scope had pushed the completion date further back than expected.

“The project started as a JW Marriot and in April 2011, ADNH moved the operator to Ritz Carlton,” said Richard Riley, CEO of ADNH.

“At that time, we reworked the interiors of the rooms, suites and villas, and completely redesigned the SPA moving the operator to the ESPA brand.

“The hotel will be delivered to Ritz Carlton for testing, commissioning and dry runs from June. They will ramp up over the summer and the Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal will open its doors on September 1.”

ADNH is investing AED1.5bn in the property, which is located on a 230,000 sq m site overlooking the Grand Canal at the foot of Abu Dhabi island.

Upon completion it will be the largest Ritz Carlton in the world by floor area, made up of 102 separate buildings.

Designed by American architecture firm Otak, the hotel will include a total of 532 rooms of minimum size 52 sq m, with interiors by SFA Design.

Other highlights include conference facilities, a ballroom, restaurants and bars, a marine village and underground garages, as well as a 3,000m spa, furnished apartments and 85 VIP chalets resembling offshore “floating houses.”

ADNH is a publicly-listed company which owns several major hotels in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dubai.

In 2010 it saw profits decline by AED128m from 2009, after an oversupplied market put downward pressure on room rates and occupancy levels.

The new hotel will be the third hotel in the UAE for the Ritz Carlton brand, with two properties already located in Dubai.

The international hotelier said in September last year it may consider a second hotel in Abu Dhabi in the future, because the market was a “very promising [one] in the long term.”

Lovely hotel but intresting they changed the brand and delayed the opening as the marketplace has too many rooms. As the government own 30% of ADNH i guess they didn't want to open when hotel owners are complaining of drops in rates and occupancy. I think this area now has too many rooms and needs to some thing for all these hotel guests to do.

Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi: access all areas to a five-star mini city

Quote:
Mitya Underwood | Mar 11, 2013

Bringing the Ritz-Cartlon name to the capital took more than a hefty budget. Turf from Australia, olive trees from Spain and 21,000 crystals went into making the
latest five-star hotel for Abu Dhabi. The hotel, which employs 480 Ladies and Gentlemen (they must never be called staff, it's against company policy), spends 10
days before the opening day preparing every minute detail. Silvia Razgova / The National

The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi is the hotel chain's 3rd largest hotel in the world in terms of building area. The hotel boasts 10 food and drink outlets, each one designed
specifically for this hotel, including Dolce pictured here. Silvia Razgova / The National

Sometimes it seems that there are so many five-star hotels in the emirates that they are almost as numerous as fast food chains.

But what exactly does it take to open one of the most prestigious names in the world?
