Repaired Gulf Air flight takes off from CIAL

A Gulf Air flight which was damaged in an accident last year, successfully completed its trial flight at the international airport here after completing maintenance work on Monday.

In a press release, CIAL authorities said the aircraft, after a two-hour trial flight from the airport at 11.15 am, departed for Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, around 2 pm.

The flight will leave for Bahrain after two days and then to Europe for a paint job, the release said. The aircraft, which skidded off the runway in a mishap that occurred on August 29, 2011, had been undergoing maintenance for seven months. Captain A L Balooshi Nawaf, captains Noor Hesham and Keeth Sayers flew the aircraft on the trial flight.

Air India to fly additional service from Bangalore

Air India will increase frequency from Bangalore airport effective April 4.

With the lifting of runway restriction by BIAL, the enhanced frequency will enable the national carrier to cater to the increased passenger demand during holiday season, said a press release from Air India.

The airline will fly additional capacity to Male (two daily flights), Delhi (five direct flights), Mumbai (four direct flights), Chennai, Kolkata, and Kochi (daily).

The Bangalore-Hyderabad daily flight will operate on the Bangalore-Pune-Goa sector, except on Saturdays when it will be a Bangalore-Hyderabad direct service as the Pune airport will be closed.

The airline will operate four flights a week on the Bangalore-Goa-Dubai sector, while it will operate thrice weekly service on the Bangalore-Hyderabad-Muscat route, said the press release.

CIAL to pamper International passengers

Cochin International Airport, as part of its efforts to increase comfort levels, has decided to start a Wellness centre inside International Concourse. The Wellness Centre will come with a Spa, Unisex saloon, rejuvenation centre etc near Gate 1.

The company has tendered for the same and expects to open the facility within 2 months.

Apart from this, the company will open up 2 premium lounges, a second fine dining restaurant and a nap & shower lounge facility in the second floor where works are undergoing for past few months.

These additional facilities, surely will take CIAL to league of other new Private airports with premium facilities.....

I have heard from a friend of mine working in Jet Airways, that almost all flights that has been cancelled from Kochi, have been restored.

Equally Jet will be introducing Nagpur and Kolkatta direct flights soon from Kochi.

Hope, it will help to regain the traffic momentum of CIAL...

Logistics seminar at CIAL Trade Centre

Not really associated with Airport operations. Posted here, since this could be the first major event happening at the brand new International Trade and Exhibition centre of Cochin International Airport.

As a curtain-raiser to the Emerging Kerala meet to be held in September, the Kerala State Productivity Council and the logistics major Falcon Infrastructures Limited will hold a seminar on opportunities in logistics and supply chain management.

The seminar is expected to draw over 600 participants from India and abroad, the organizers said. Sessions on the latest trends in logistics, discussions, business-to-business meets, audiovisual presentations and the like are planned. The organizers pointed out that while Kerala has made major strides in service sectors like tourism, IT and healthcare, the state has not fully capitalized on its potential in logistics sector. With the launch of the Vallarpadam International Transshipment Container Terminal, exciting growth opportunities have dawned upon the state. With the exception of the founding of a couple of freight stations, no other investment worth mentioning has happened in the state so far.

Against this background, the seminar will bring existing growth opportunities in the logistics sector to light, thereby creating new pathways for investment for global investors.

Organizations like KSIDC, KINFRA, Department of Ports and Dubai Ports World will be supporting the seminar.

The seminar, which will debate the theme 'New Trends in Logistics - Gateway to Fast-track Prosperity' will be held at the CIAL Trade Fair Centre at Nedumbassery in Kochi from July 13 to 15.

Passengers waiting for flights at the international lounge of Kochi airport will son have a new avenue to relax themselves. A modern spa and saloon would be operational at the airport in three months hence.

“The spa service was one of the several suggestions made by passengers during the Airport Authority of India’s (AAI) survey on customer satisfaction index at airports across the country.

This service is introduced for the first time across the airports in the state, though it is already available at other airports including Mumbai and Delhi,” Joseph Peter, Manager (Commercial), said.

The airport registered a growth of 5.72 per cent last year compared to 2010-11 in terms of passenger movements in the International sector. It was of the order of 2,359,937.

Recently, the Wi-Fi system was installed at the airport, allowing passengers to connect to the internet on wi-fi enabled devices such as smart phones, tablets and laptops.

“The spa and saloon facility will come at the waiting lounge of the international side and be located near gate number 1 which will have a rest room wall on one side. Various services like waxing, foot reflexology, facials, pedicure and other body treatments will be on offer,” the official said.

Tenders are being floated for the service. The revenue share percentage fixed by CIAL is 20 per cent subject to a minimum guaranteed monthly royalty of Rs 75,000. “Since it is located after the security hold area, only the international passengers will get the service,” the official said.

Lot of amenities coming up...... Its really good.... Equally what more now needed is a Kids centre and a good fast food court, as fine dining is not everyone's cup of tea.... Normally food courts and duty free shopping remains the two major activities to avoid boredom in security hold.....

CIAL has successfully able to shed the traditional blue collar traffic oriented airport image, normally associated with Kerala airports. Lot of premium spenders are using the facility. Surely with new International terminal, it will take a new shape.......

CIAL makes check-in faster

To simplify and speed up check-in formalities, Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) launched the Airport Hub Infrastructure (APHI) on Monday.

The APHI will enable operating airlines to maintain undisrupted and continuous connectivity with their main server, leading to more quick and efficient processing of passenger data, Cial said in a press release on Monday.

At present, airline operators use internet connection through telephone for check-in process at the airport and any cable problems can disrupt the smooth conduct of the process.

The hub infrastructure, a multi-city network, will help the operator acess another internet connection to ease the check-in formalities. Cial is the fifth airport in the country to introduce this facility, after Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Feasibility study for the project has started.

Plan to produce 20 mW of electricity by installing solar panels in 150 acres of the airport premises.

Another project to produce power from wind at Palakkad is also considered. A separate company under CIAL will be formed for power generation.

The funds for projects are expected from the public issue this year.

CIAL is taking lot of initiatives on a daily basis.... Good to see that. The airport is going green before the new airport is coming. It might be the tip of iceberg, for more new initiatives for the upcoming Green Airport.

With this, Cochin becomes first airport in the country, probably in subcontinent, to own in-house DARK facility. Currently Air India's DARK Facility in Mumbai is the only such facility for entire safety operations across South Asian Airport.

Hash10 WorldSim now available in Maharashtra

Chennai-based Hash 10 Telecom Pvt. Ltd. has appointed Nomad Travels as the authorised distributor in Maharashtra for UK-based WorldSim’s global roaming SIM cards, distributed in India by Hash10 Telecom as Hash10 WorldSim.

Hash 10 Telecom is also currently in talks with three Indian carriers, Jet Airways, Air India and Kingfisher Airlines, for in-flight sales of Hash10 WorldSim. The company has so far been distributing these cards on 14 other international airlines including Lufthansa Airways, Air Arabia, Virgin Atlantic, etc. According to Mohammed Saleem, Vice President, Hash 10 Telecom Pvt. Ltd., the company has been distributing the cards on international flights through IDFS Tradings Pvt. Ltd., but this will be their first individual deal with Indian carriers. The SIM card is also sold at the Hyderabad and Cochin International Airports, with stalls at the Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata international airports in the pipeline.

Hash 10 WorldSim global roaming cards provide the customer a permanent global contact number operational in 220 countries, of which 90 offer free incoming services. For the USA, which is not part of the company's regular call plans, WorldSim currently offers a short-code service that provides a separate number in the country on the same SIM card through an SMS request. Since the previous Left government named major parks and popular meeting places in the state after Communist Party of India-Marxist leaders, people in Kerala are curious about the names the Oommen Chandy regime plans to give to the three international airports.
Incidentally, Kerala is the only state in the country which has three functional international airports and clearance has been given to a fourth at Kannur. These airports are currently known by their locations.
The oldest airport in the state and one which got international status during the regime of the V.P. Singh government in New Delhi is the Thiruvananthapuram international airport.
The Cochin International Airport Limited, which was the first in the country to come up under private-public partnership in the '90s, was kick-started by then chief minister K. Karunakaran.


The third is located in Malappuram district and is known as the Kozhikode international airport.
One name which is certain to be okayed is of Col G.V. Raja, who set the ball rolling for the Trivandrum airport and also one who started the Flying Club here.
A keen sports enthusiast and an accomplished pilot, Raja died in an air crash in Kulu Valley in 1971.
He is the husband of Princess Karthika Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore, the sister of Maharajah Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, and hence it is unlikely that his name for an airport would evoke any opposition.
With regards to Kochi airport, it is almost certain to be named after Karunakaran because he is the one who started this novel project.
As for Kozhikode airport, the Chandy government is unlikely to create any controversy and is almost certain to choose a name from the ballads of Malabar.
