To your first question, older (poorer, historically) neighborhoods like Pilsen and Wicker Park did not get their houses 'raised' with the street back the mid 1800s. In order to deal with the sewage problem in the 1800s Chicago literally had the streets raised so gravity could carry waste away from homes. In areas where they could afford it, the buildings were actually raised with the street. In poorer neighborhoods, the houses stayed, which is why in areas of Pilsen the houses are below the street level.
It's mentioned in detail in City of the Century, but I have also found some info here: http://www.gapersblock.com/airbags/a...hed_the_world/ |

Just wondering as someone that is apprehensive about losing our Richard M Daily a Mayor that was the Mayor just a bit longer than his old man... Hell in 89 the late 80's [ yes I mean remeber the 76 election of Burn and before it. [ the 70's and early 1980's were tough times... [that is I was just starting college and was happy he took over the racial disaster on the lake.
What is his future? [ I would venture to say that those born after he was elected would give two shits before they even thought about this question. ] Those born after the the early to late 1970's have little understanding of what could have become of Chicago in those turbulent times. The two of them contributed in saving the core of this city more than any other politicians could have in the some ~40-50 years or so in power...; After MJD the city was in a situ worse than today as far as the power vaccum. There seems to be a trust in Rham and the business leaders seem to be content for the moment.... But..... As to detify the second my thoughts on this subject must be addressed. There is little that is being said about it. He was never a strong public speaker and to garnish massive hundreds of thousands of dollars of speaking fees seems a bit of a challenge for him at the moment with his wife so frequently ill. I wish the history channel will do a decent hour plus documentary on the man and I hope he retains a very strong semi auto biography team to build his legacy that he earned. His younger brother earned millions through banking and is now a chief of staff to Obama. But RMD never earned millions, he only cololessed power and that power should earn him some respect in the future in the future governmental or quasi board of several large corps and lobbingy firms like his younger brother. The jist of this post is how will RMD fund his lavish lifestyle with or without his large bodyguard entourage and trust me with this families medical bills he will need a few million in the bank in the next few years. Is it though an autobiography plus a few international speaking arrangements, aka Dubya and Bubba? IMO RMD and only do a few in a couple of years. Where is his big money income, other than a modest pension of being a mayor for twenty some odd years. To live like his brother or at least a quarter of his peers he will need an income of several millions for the next several years. I hope all of his hard work will make his retirement prosperous. That said I do not wish that many people advanced success in their retirement years unless they truly earned it, and I believe in my heart he does. Last edited by bnk; May 8th, 2011 at 08:20 AM. |

I found no better place to ask this, but what are the large blocks south of UIC and the IMD? The area I'm talking about is 13th st, 14th st and 15th in between Damen and Ashland. Was there a CHA project that got torn down? I got lost looking for a friends house and came upon those streets and it was really weird to look at.
As a related note, are there any plans to develop that in the future? |

You mean all those empty blocks? Definitely looks weird from satellite. From the map here it looks like it could be Brooks Homes, Abbott Homes, or Loomis Cts...though those all appear to have been east of Ashland

Well I hope one of them does something with it because it was really creepy because the streets and trees are there and they look like a regular neighborhood except there are no houses.

So I was watching this movie the other day called "Opportunity Knocks" filmed in chicago in 1990. I was curious to know what this building was with the spire on it. Why was it demolished?

The building with the spire never existed in Chicago. IMDB says the movie was filmed in L.A. too, so maybe it is/was there. Or maybe it's just a matte job.

In the first photo was depicted the Mercantile Building, so that had to be a couple of Dallas skyscrapers and not those of Chicago or L.A..

Love the Banner today : ) I just watched DVD 'Source Code' and that shiny sculpture featured specially at the end. How long has that been there ? I visited Chicago way back in 2000......Don't think it was there then, but as a tourist must miss things ? Chicago is a wonderful city and I hope to come back one day.......I expected it to be a gritty industrial city but thought it very clean, tidy and attractive. I keep up with the place via SSC, nothing stands still for long............

Without checking online, I distinctly remember that the Park had just opened in Spring of 2004. But "The Bean" had been tantalizing Chicagoans way before that -- at least a year before opening, I think... I also like the look of today's banner. Last edited by tpe; December 28th, 2011 at 04:07 PM. |
