Again, the metro could never be expanded on time even for 2012, due to the detailed archaeological excavations. And I dont see why the tram is needless, thousands of people use it daily for their transportation in the city, also it carries you from the very center to the beaches of Athens in less than 1 hour.

Yet they managed to complete lines 2 and 3 well before the 2004 Olympics.

As for the tram, yes people use it and that's good, but it was just a needless project added on top a more than sufficient subway network.

A tramline was the best Athens could do that times. A subway line instead would be at least x10 more expensive in order to be constructed from 1997 to 2004, if that was ever possible (construction of lines 2&3 didn t start in 1997 when Athens took the Games but in 1991, and the planning even prior and it took 14 years for the construction due to the archaeological delays). If you construct subway in Greece (both Athens and Thessaloniki) you know for sure that it will never be on time, so there was no reason to risk. Tram is good and efficient, connecting two of the olympic complexes (Faliro and Helleniko) and plus, in the next years it will be the main transportation system for the New Opera and National Library of Greece. If you still believe that it was useless or that a metro line could actually be constructed in Athens into 7 years, ok whatever.

I never said it was entirely useless, just needless when the subway was being built regardless. Just something on top of something. Money spent on the tramway could have been used elsewhere.

So far I am very satisfied with ambitious and well-prepared Baku 2020 campaign. I would be so happy if Baku passes to the shortlist. I strongly believe this time we deserve to be shortlisted. Thanks to everybody who supports us!

Baku has a good chance of making the shortlist, especially now that Rome has withdrawn. If they were the only one to be kicked out, there would be foul cry claiming the IOC is signaling out 1 applicant over 5. It's highly unlikely that the IOC would just choose Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul.

I trust your prediction especially by taking into account the fact that this time Baku's bid is pretty strong, wise and realistic in comparison to the previous one

Baku 2020 Gets 100,000 Signatures

More than 100,000 people signed a nationwide campaign in five days supporting Baku's bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, including the country's President Ilham Aliyev and his wife Mehriban Aliyeva.

Konul Nurullayeva, CEO of Baku 2020 said, "this deluge of signatures, which are being collected in towns and cities all over the country by one of the national youth groups, graphically demonstrates the huge passion and desire that people in Azerbaijan have to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"It also backs up the results of our opinion poll, submitted in the Applicant File, which showed an amazing 95 per cent support for the bid.

"The positive environmental, social and economic impact of Baku 2020 is almost impossible to calculate. And the legacy for sport in Azerbaijan will transform the lives of athletes for generations to come. That is why there is such an amazing passion in Azerbaijan for hosting the Games in Baku".

Nurullayeva added, "our bid is not only about what the Olympic Games can do for Baku and Azerbaijan, however. Our slogan, 'Together we can', proposes a partnership with the Olympic Movement.

"Baku 2020 offers an historic opportunity for a new chapter in Olympic history, and thanks to our location bridging east and west, Baku will open new and lucrative markets for the IOC and its partners".

General question: Is there a minimum or maximum number of satellite cities (outside the Olympic host city) that can host Summer Olympic football matches?

I think the IOC guideline is 4 preliminary venues and 1 in the capital as well as the finals venue to make a total of 6 venues.

London proposed 7 venues:

London - Finals
Manchester
Coventry
Newcastle

Cardiff - Wales
Glasgow - Scotland
Belfast - Northern Ireland

They eliminated Belfast when they couldn't upgrade their stadium or decided not to build a new one.

Don't worry. I read in my today's newspaper Qatar has got oil reserves worth
7,300,000,000,000,000 $, I guess the IOC will sell the games for just 10,000,000,000 $

They've just to ask Blatter how much it is to buy a world sport event..

My favourite choice :

1) Tokyo
2) Baku
3) Doha

Istanbul & Madrid

Because in 2024 it's...

Horrible logo! Where's the charm? The love? The Frenchiness? Besides, the IOC would probably not allow it due to the potential of the 2024 or Paris for that matter not being legible. :P
