I guess BE has no road system
![]() Not that I want to know what people think of it. They don't say any good most of the time.

United States: 5 Crumbling but good coverage
Canada:6 Probably better, actually just guessing here UK:8 Crowded and could do with a few more, but usually 3 lanes and almost all toll free France:8 Wide and open with good tarmac, but you pay quite a bit and there are fines if you speed Germany:8 Extensive system with no tolls and often no limits, excellent fun in the right car, but you need to be paying a lot of attention to everything and roadworks can mean miles in temporary lanes barely wider than a car. Italy:6 Excellent roads let down by some appalling driving Denmark:7 Good enough, free until you get to the incredibly expensive bridges Poland:5 Not bad, improving fast but some bad driving Netherlands:6 Free but crowded, speed limits everywhere and far too many lorries. |

I think widely varying ratings will be obtained due to several factors including:
* When you last visited (Africa develops fast) * Where you went (Urban vs. Rural , Regional variation) * Which routes are considered (Overall coverage / Main routes / Motorways only / etc.)

From my personal experience:
Austria: 6,5 (rather limited motorway network, not that good signage, toll) Belgium: 6 (dense network, but in bad state of maintenance, bad signage) Czech Rep.: 6,5 (expending fine D/R-network, rest of roads lacking basic roadmarking) France: 7 (rather good network, expensive tolls, ridiculous demands on on-board alcohol-device, tollroads well maintained) Germany: 9 (fine network, still a lot of sections without speed limit, fine signage, free of tolls, state of maintenance is however varying) Luxemburg: 7,5 (still missing A7, too much a mixture of Belgian, French and German road systems. Very well maintained.) Netherlands: 8 (fine and well maintained, but congested network - being relieved) Poland: 6,5 (improving on all fronts very rapidly, except for signage) Spain: 6,5 (too many types of roadnumbers, expensive tolls) Last edited by aswnl; April 5th, 2012 at 11:01 PM. |

Uk: 8 (roads are very narrow but the motorways are perfect)
France: 7 (really good motorways and expressways, national and "D" roads worse than the sames in Spain...) Italy: 8, (crazy signs and network, you can drive through tolled motorways along the territory without stooping for pay...) Portugal: 6,5 (good motorways and expressways, good signage, bad toll system if you come from another country, roads are #@¬%$ ) Spain: 7,5 (because we have a "dense" network of motorways and good principals roads, but, tolls are a robbery, speed cameras are only for money, existence of dangerous motorways such as A-31, total anarchy in signage system along the country, two names for motorway (Autopista and Autovía), the budget cuts for road maintenance ...) Morocco: 5,5 (7 in motorways, they need to make a better signage system like Saudi Arabia or United Arab Emirates...)

Why do you say this? I think Moroccan signage is extremely clear

Can only rate the ones I've driven myself in:
Netherlands: 5, quality is generally okay but absolute **** speed limits, heavy traffic, rubbish anti car measures and excessive speedbumps everywhere and in town you can easily do 25 mins for just 4 km's... Too little fly overs and such, rubbish provincial network ( in the Randstad), no alternatives to the main roads, ''Duurzaam veilig'' which ruins the roads that aren't dedicated for ''through traffic''. Way to much speed enforcement too. Quality here locally ( around Rotterdam) appears to be decreasing imho. Un-even roads are becoming more common. Plumping down whole new residential area's without upgrading the surrounding road capacity for the new neighbourhoods... Germany: 9, only gripe is roadworks really, otherwise extremely relaxed driving compared to here, no crappy speed limits on autobahns, and towns and villages aren't littered with anti car rubbish and speedbumps every 100 meters ( not been to any big cities recently, but country towns and villages are a breeze to drive through, I haven't come across a single speedbump)... Yellow+red before green means less sleepers @ green at lights too . I really love driving in Germany, but I only really know the route from Hengelo to the Polish A2 and a bit of Nordrhein Westfalen. Normal speeding fines (only 10€ for 10 km/h to fast I got recently) unlike rip off Holland.Poland: 4, driving on the new motorways and expressways is great, very relaxed, low traffic, can cruise at high speed with little problems bar the occasional truck overtaking which takes AGES. Outside of motorways and exrpessroads driving is very stressful, many morons on the roads and congested. Aside from that I know Warsaw well, stressful driving, congested as hell sometimes, generally nice wide roads ( but not always in the best condition) but the traffic makes it bad, constantly on your toe for idiots... At least they have decent speed limits, higher speed limit at night in built-up areas . It's been a while but roads not recently restored used to be crappy with lots of Rut, extremely destructive for your suspension and not doable if you have a lowered car like me atm, I hope they have improved it as I'd be scraping with my bumper over the tarmac all the time in my current car. Tolls (ugh ).
